I honestly never would have thought of you being a police officer. I know. I'm very different than the characters I portray. I grew up in a small town, and I grew up kind of like a tomboy with a lot of fishing and camping and sports. There was a fan question that came in.

Having a natural passion for serving the people and the country, Mr. Newlin started his public service when he was only 18 years of age when he worked for the city of New Chicago in the state of Indiana as an Emergency Medical Technician. He would later go on to join the law enforcement as a police officer in the same city before becoming an Orange County Deputy Sheriff with the county’s sheriff office where his hard work enabled him to attain the high rank of a Sheriff’s Detective. Mr.Newlin was able to receive many awards for his selfless and outstanding service in law enforcement.

I agree that officers have a stressful and demanding job. I think that the police needs to know how the community and the board sees them. Sometimes the truth hurts and in this case it may but they need to know. I think your idea on having officers at community events is a great idea. Showing that the officers care makes the community respect their authority more.

To this end, it would also be a fair assumption that Wilson’s experience in the Ferguson Police Department taught him to react more extreme than was needed in most situations. This is not meant to Monday morning quarterback Wilson’s decision in the moment. Aggressive police culture will not change unless officers hold their colleagues accountable. It is important to check in with one another, to recognize the humanity within us. It is okay to become jaded sometimes, but there must be an awareness of how we treat one another, our motives, and particularly an officer’s duty to protect all American citizens. In addition to officers allowing other officers too much discretion, there needs to be a change in the amount of discretion given to police departments as a whole. The political climate of today’s tension has shifted public trust in the police.

A news report released by CNN on April 10, 2015 displayed three examples of use of force abuse by on duty officers. Of these three incidents the results were a man dying in police custody after a dog allegedly mauled him, a mentally ill man being was shot dead after his family called police asking for help, and an officer who shooting into a vehicle after a car chase, killing a man who was initially suspected of drunk driving. Of all three incidents the deceased happened to all be Black men. Incidents like so have led to the formation of groups like Black Lives Matter. Instances such as these open up debate about if police are using excessive force based upon the suspect’s race.

Police brutality is causing economic issues all across the United States because of the high number of civil complaints and sues in the last recent years. Although it is true that the costs vary from place to place, it is still people that have to pay for the errors of others. The Cost of Police brutality is showing the great amount of money that is fluctuating in New York due to the excess force from police officers and each year the amount goes up compared to the last year. Although it mentioned just the case of Francis X. Luvoti, a police officer from Bronx, New York, it illustrates the exaggerate amount of money that these police officers are costing because of the bad decision and excess of force. In his case, it mentioned that officer Luvoti were indicted for criminally negligent homicide for choking to dead to Anthony Baez.

Relationships between police officers and the general public have been a roller coaster ride over the past 30 years, when it comes to the way some officers act when put in bad situations, or even if they are just acting out of anger. Melvin Russell explains in his speech that police officers need to do a better job of working with the public and treating them as if they are a customer. Russell has been a police officer himself for nearly 40 years, and is the Chief of the Community Partnership Division of the Baltimore Police Department. The TedTalk, “I Love Being a Police Officer, but We Need Reform,” by Melvin Russell was very persuasive and proposed a strong argument by using pathos and having an engaging voice, being credible in his words,

Law enforcement is an honorable job to have and to uphold, especially a State Trooper. You will have a reputation to uphold. In this field it will come to know that it is very unpredictable. Every morning when you go into the field, there is always a chance you won't come home.

A career in policing requires an individual to meet a high standard for character and demonstrated behavior, in order to be developed into an effective officer. Succeeding in a police academy requires the candidate to display and apply integrity, a skill which must be developed before receiving admission. Integrity demonstrated through a police officer’s personal life, provides the foundation for a respected career. When presented with the opportunity to leverage a peace officer’s position for personal profit, an individual who has previously made selfless choices, is more reliable for operating within the law. Integrity as a term has the social implication of following ones beliefs, regardless of the opposition.

In this week’s module one content. I learned that there should always be police integrity and community trust. “With police and community trust, there is an honored relationship between citizens and a government agency.” (Community Trust and Police Integrity, p.7-16) Secondly, police officers must be trusted to behave in an ethical way on their own.

Many young people aspire to become police officers. However, not everyone is fit for the role as police work is extremely demanding both physically and mentally. In order to be effective in the job, a policeman should possess superb communication skills, extra-ordinary courage, excellent judgement, empathy, and a high degree of professionalism, to name a few. Choosing this career in law enforcement can be a quite challenging yet rewarding. If you aspire to join the police force, then you are bound to make a difference in your community as well as your own personal life.
