Police Operational Strategies

In our small town of Russell, we take pride in those who are outstanding to the community and have helped better our lives. Sadly, those who have had faith put into them by their loved and trusted fellow people have lost trust and value to our town. With the lack of budget, it has become hard to keep law enforcement around since many leave and go to better paying jobs elsewhere. Don 't get me wrong, we have great police officers who do their job well but, with limited people their job is just a game of ring around the rosey.

When it comes down to it, officers have the great responsibility of keeping citizens safe and if there is no trust between these groups of people, then the system will not be successful and it will fail. Those in uniform have acquired a large feeling of distrust from citizens in some places because of these unfortunate shooting incidents. We need to work on building a better relationship between police and citizens because we are all in it together. The police are listening, they are there to help. It is a work in progress and every day we are moving toward a better tomorrow where we can all be seen

I agree that officers have a stressful and demanding job. I think that the police needs to know how the community and the board sees them. Sometimes the truth hurts and in this case it may but they need to know. I think your idea on having officers at community events is a great idea. Showing that the officers care makes the community respect their authority more.

Nevertheless, a responsive officer serving a specific neighborhood has the potential to have an impactful presence in the community. The third program the BPD vehemently supports is the neighborhood watch program. The purpose of the program is to reduce and prevent neighborhood crime. The Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy Community policing has produced several programs since its origination. Some of the initiatives were more successful than others but all of the programs have helped to bring community policing to where it stands today. The Chicago Police Department was responsible for constructing a highly respected initiative called the Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy. Technology and Communication systems are critical tools in policing. The rate of technological change in recent years is so fast that I personally believe that is safe to predict that in a mere few years from now, current technology will be substantially improved if not obsolete. Technology is constantly changing the way police departments operate in many ways. When I first started in EMS 20 years ago, I had intended to use dispatching as a gateway into policing (instead of Emergency Medicine.) Back then, Computer Aided Dispatching was ground breaking technology, GPS did not exist, tracking of units was done with paper, graphs, whiteboards and bulletin boards.

This paper includes a set of ideas for bettering community policing. According to the paper, "training should encompass more than policing methods" (U.S. Conference of Mayors, 2015). The paper emphasizes the significance of police personnel knowing their position in society and emphasizing community participation. "Training must focus on reducing unjustified use of force, and officers should be given alternatives to the use of deadly firearms" (U.S. Conference of Mayors, 2015).

What does Patrol do? Being that patrol officers are most commonly encountered by the public, their duties consist of responding to calls for service, resolving disputes, taking crime reports, making arrest, conducting traffic stops, and other crime prevention measures. Being that patrol officers have to know geographic areas well it is important that they are the first to arrive on the scene of any incident. As an officer it is also important that they take precaution measures to everything they do in the crime scene area; what such an officer does or fails to do at the scene can and will greatly influence the outcome of any investigation. Problem-solving policing involves entering the community and working with residents to identify problems and the actual causes of crime in the community. Community policing has been discussed but not explained. What is coming policing and why is it so important?
