Police Discretion

I agree that officers have a stressful and demanding job. I think that the police needs to know how the community and the board sees them. Sometimes the truth hurts and in this case it may but they need to know. I think your idea on having officers at community events is a great idea. Showing that the officers care makes the community respect their authority more.

Police ethics training is a vital aspect needed to comprise a successful and principled police department. The required reading for a police ethics training course must be compelling and relatable for police officers to identify with the material and grasp its importance. Therefore, I would require police officers to read Brotherhood of Corruption, Walking with the Devil, chapter one: Introduction to the New Police Accountability in the book The New World of Police Accountability, and chapter three: Police Ethics: Use of Force, Investigations, Interrogations, and Lying in the Criminal Justice Ethics textbook by Cyndi Banks. The work that police officers do is very complex. There are different rules and codes that they are supposed to follow in order to accomplish their job at their organization. Police brutality will be an issue until a solution is created. Many individuals are victims of this form of assault on daily basis. The liberties held by law enforcement are challenged each time they perform their duties. Police officers should abide by the same laws that each citizen is expected to abide by. Although police officers are granted with the right to determine laws as constitutional, civilians are sometimes treated in ways that are beyond unlawful.

They have to gather knowledge of the crimes in the area and what the underlying causes of the social problems is. They must create a plan that works to deter crime, and assess the progress of those plans to see if it works or what needs to be changed. Because it is still a newer approach, all departments should (if they already haven’t), create a community policing division that focuses on what is going on in their community around them. Officers need to build trust between themselves and the communities they serve; which means, responding to the calls that are considered “non-emergency. While it can be interpreted as standing for ones beliefs, a police officer must uphold a high moral code in accordance to the society which is being served. The ethics to which police officers holds themselves, must include the character traits demonstrated in personal life, in addition to operating as public servants. If an officer is deemed untrustworthy at home, they cannot be trusted to work legally within the police department. Honesty within policing is just as important, where failing to admit a mistake can weaken a reputation and call previous cases into question. Although these traits can be trained into an individual, integrity must be developed personally before it can be applied

Another issue is prisoner mistreatment, there are many people who have been incarcerated and are victims of abuse emotionally, physically, and mentally by correctional officers. When it comes to having and being able to maintain a strong moral code, front line patrol officers are the perfect example of what law enforcement requires. To ensure front line patrol officers maintain a strong moral code, they must be able to keep their integrity on and off duty. Officers should have this characteristic before they are hired and should be open for the police academy to repair and strengthen them.
