Jennifer Williams was originally from Maryland. She moved from Maryland to North Carolina then finally to Rural Retreat, Virginia. Jennifer graduated for Rural Retreat High School in 1993. With being interested with cosmetology and helping others, she enrolled at Summit School of Cosmetology. After many years of learning, taking different paths and discovering the beauty industry, Jennifer decided she want to help people more than their skincare, hair care and all the other aspect that a Cosmetologist helps clients with. While talking with a friend about the field the Physical Therapy and months of research of career opportunities, training requirements, and available training, she had found the path she been looking for. Enrolling in class at Wytheville Community College, the desire and drive for a learning and preparing for a new career started. While waiting to go through the interview process for the Physical Therapy Assistant program, Jennifer completed the Health Science Certificate. With great joy she was accepted into the program. Jennifer, is now a full time student and starting the second semester of the program. Even though she has a love of learning and sharing knowledge Jennifer also, has a love for animals. The Job outlook from 2014-2024 will grow 40% over the years. The projection is faster than the average than any other job. A PTA makes about $45,290 per year and $21.77 per hour but wages change due to degree, year of experience, location, and time. We are living in a generation where humans live longer and the demand of PTA is high.

When I was working as a non-certified student athletic trainer I took the athletes to the Physical Therapist and I was allowed in by the student to watch the evaluation. At this time I realized that I was so interested in this field and I knew that I may have found a career.

My childhood initiated a desire to help prevent and mitigate injury or illness; this soon flourished into an interest in the health care field. To help narrow my choices I explored as many science courses as I could. Talking with health care professionals and reading nursing textbooks I found in my aunt’s house piqued my interest in the nursing field and patient care. From there, I completed a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) course which further solidified my decision. Now, I am fully invested in becoming a nurse.
However, I was even glad that she was able to give me an insight of how my future life will be like. She was also able to make me more interested in becoming a PTA. I want to bring hope to patients, just like she does. I want patients to feel like they matter. I want to be there for patients who suffered from stroke, dementia, and those who are rehabilitating from broken bones.

I have always had the intense desire to care and look after people from a very young age. I firmly believe that everyone deserves the best quality of life possible and this is what had drawn me to occupational therapy as a career path in the first place. Becoming an occupational therapist is my passion and my long-term career goal. Since a young age I have been incredibly inspired and motivated to befriend and help disabled individuals. Having grown up with a disabled mother who benefited from the services of occupational therapy I had the opportunity to see first hand how the experience gave can give individuals like her fulfilling and productive lives. With both parents working as healthcare professionals, including my mother who is now an occupational therapist herself, I see every day how rewarding the field is. Through my life I have had unique personal, professional and educational experiences that have shaped me into a strong candidate for an advanced education in occupational therapy.
I thought I knew what career path I wanted for my future, with that in mind, I sought a degree in Fitness and Human Performance to continue with a career in Occupational Therapy. In this career choice, the way I got to help patients was through therapy. While taking classes, I realized Occupational Therapy is not what I truly was passionate about.
