We all have life goals. Things we need and want to do, but sometimes life events can prevent you or makes it more difficult for you to stop you from doing what you want to do. An occupational therapist can help people define tools and strategies to overcome barriers such as illness and disabilities. According to the American Occupational Therapy Association, “Occupational therapists help people across the lifespan participate in things they want to do through the therapeutic use of everyday activities ”(American Occupational Therapy Association). Having a holistic foundation is essential in providing quality healthcare. My goal is to become a highly competent Occupational Therapist, specialized in the field of pediatrics. I have a strong undergraduate academic foundation that provides me with the confidence, skill and perseverance needed to sustain in professional school. I am also an individual that loves to be active and creative in many ways. In my spare time I love to do things such as cook, attend work out classes, attempt DIY projects and read interesting novels.

However, I want to do more I want to be able to follow the process from beginning to end and do the evaluations. I want to be able to do the testing and the measuring. I have set out on this journey of health care because I want to help people go from post-operative to back to fully functioning with realistic goals in place. I want to be able to walk the journey with the patients and let them know that they are not on it alone. Through Physical Therapy I feel that patients get more than just rehabilitation of an injury or surgery but they get a change in mindset from injured to functioning independently again as they did before.

The reason Quentin wants to become a physical therapist is because his sister, Camille, has had several surgeries when she was younger. He was able to have a first-hand look at how much a physical therapist could impact someone’s life. Camille had to undergo yet another surgery in the summer of 2016, and Quentin was again able to see how different her life would have been without the help of physical therapy.

I have been at Udall since preschool. I currently play volleyball, run track, participate in organizations such as FCCLA, FBLA, SADD, NHS Treasurer, and Student Council President. I am employed at JAG Gymnastics in Andover, where I teach and help girls learn to do gymnastics. My sister and I had physical therapy when we were injured, and it helped us both significantly. I will be attending Cowley County Community College for my first two years, then transferring to Emporia State University to pursue my career as a Physical Therapist Assistant.

In order to get a job with a pay to sustain a middle class life, some type of education will be required whether is technical school, colleges, or even just clinicals.

I have struggled for years attempting to decipher what I should pursue as a career. However, when considering top priorities in terms of a career, helping others and variety are the most important to me. Occupational therapy definitely fits those parameters, and through my shadowing experiences, I feel confident that this is what I am meant to do. I admire that occupational therapists care for a wide range of patients across the lifespan, with each patient offering a unique perspective and a chance to learn something new. I also appreciate the flexibility of this field in regard to the broad definition of “occupation” and the variety of settings that occupational therapists can be seen working in.

The fact that learning never stops, that you work and collaborate with some of the smartest minds around, and the uniqueness of each patient gets me very eager to enroll in a challenging DPT program with proven student success. I am very thankful for the experience I’ve had so far observing physical therapy and studying the sciences in my undergrad. I don’t think as many other careers are so open to allow students into their workspace and I look forward to one day being able to spark another young student’s interest in rehab therapy. As a professional, one must adhere to the guiding principles defined by the professional association. Scope of Practice outlines the “notions of professional conduct, accountability and self- governance and expanded practice”. Scope of Practice summarizes “the range of roles and activities an individual registrant or licensee is permitted to undertake in the course of professional practice. These roles and activities are largely determined by professional education and practice competence along with factors in the practice context, such as demands on practitioners’ services and available resources” (Fealy 2005). Scope of Practice is based upon the “profession 's unique body of knowledge, supported by educational preparation, a body of evidence, and existing or emerging practice frameworks” (American Physical Therapy Association, 2015).

Funny how cliché it is for your parents to tell you as a kid, “When you grow up you 're going to be a successful Doctor or Lawyer”. My parents definitely told me that, but I paid no mind. I actually didn 't like the idea. Maybe one of the reasons was that my mother dressed me up in scrubs in the sixth grade and everyone made fun of me. Although, as time progressed and I got older I started thinking maybe a career in the medical field could be for me.
