At the same time that I believe there are police officers who use excessive force, I believe there are people who are defying and undermining the officers. At the same time that the officers are protecting themselves, the innocent citizens should not be getting shot. Philando Castile’s gun was not even loaded, nor did he ever reach for the gun. This is one of the most asked topics that presidential candidates were asked during their election periods. It does not really seem like much can be done with the situation until the officer for this particular case goes on trial. As for racial profiling in general, it does not seem like much is being done to solve the problem. At the same time I ask myself, “Is there even a solution to this problem?”. We all judge people from the moment that we see them, so how exactly can this be solved besides the use of body cams and dash cams? I enjoyed reading this article because I find learning about racial profiling and if police brutality is a real
On October 21, 2015, Davon Lymon shot and killed New Mexico police officer Daniel Webster during a traffic stop. The bodycam footage is all over the web, but if you are interested in reading some of the finer details along with the video you can check out the Daily Mail article as well. Webster was cruising in his patrol car through a Walgreen’s pharmacy parking lot when he notices a motorcycle with 2 passengers on it zipping through the parking lot. He runs the license plate, and learns that it is a stolen motorcycle. He immediately pulls up next to the motorcycle, which is being driven by Davon Lymon and his female companion.

Tamir Rice was a twelve-year-old boy playing in the snow at his local park, making the mistake of waving an air pellet gun at strangers- a mistake that would cost him his life. A bystander made a call to 911, and when the police arrived on the scene, within seconds of exiting the vehicle, Rice was shot. According to an article by the Pittsburgh Tribune, although police have been caught in the act, captured on camera committing a crime, they are not prosecuted 96 percent of the time. November 22, 2014, twelve-year-old, Tamir Rice, was playing and posing with his air pellet gun when a man sitting in the park called 911 to report, “there’s a guy here with a pistol, pointing it at everybody… [The gun] is probably a fake, but you know what,
In the same article, a man named Leroy Browning was shot and killed in Palmdale, CA when he was to be arrested for DUI. Leroy fled and after being caught up with, Leroy had officers in a bear hug and the officers claimed that Leroy was reaching for his gun and was then shot dead. Included in the same article, Jamar Clark was killed after being claimed that he was helping an assault victim. Even though being handcuffed and unarmed, Clark was shot and killed by Minneapolis, MN police
Many police officers get off easily because they call it as self-defense, but it’s not. People being brutally beaten or killed, riots breaking out, mourning of neighborhoods, lawsuits against police departments all can be at stake of police officers using excessive force. This is part of the reason our country has been in an uproar. In the last few years’ police brutality has been at an all-time high. Because of it, movements have been started and protests have broken out.
There are numerous issues that deal with the American criminal justice system, but the two I found most prominant that occur on a daily basis is the abuse from police officers and clear racism shown by the American criminal justice system. To begin, racism as we know is a prejudice directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior. In the criminal justice system African Americans are directly targeted and punished in a higher more aggressive way, than say someone who is caucasian and committed the same exact crime. Racism is more often than not, the motive for official misconduct. There are examples of racism from every known region in the United States, spanning across centuries from slavery to
Racial profiling is used in different ways and is a problem that needs to be solved in the United
Racial profiling has become a national issue starting in 2015 (“Racial”). Judging someone for their race has been a problem ever since a minority group has been noticed. Racial profiling has spread over all over the world. Racial profiling has been a problem through the years, if the human race can learn what racial profiling is, advantages of the profiling, and the disadvantages.
Ever heard of somebody who was claimed as a murder for three hundred people? If not, then you are going to hear about it now and be well aware of who he is . Pedro Alonso Lopez, also known as Monster of the Andes, was a colombian serial killer who was sentenced for killing eighty girls, but he claimed he murded and rapped about three hundred. By reading this you will be informed that etiquette police training and use of body cameras will majorly improve law enforcement incidents. But first we must get to know one of the many victims of police brutality Jessica Hernandez. Jessica Hernandez was a 17 year old hispanic teenager who was fatally shot by Denver police officers Daniel Greene and Gabriel Jordan. She was shot four times and two of those bullets went through the left side of her chest causing her death ( Gurman, 2015 ). Honestly four times is an excessive amount of times to shoot at someone.
Hello Faith, Nice job on your post, your outline and topic sounds interesting and might shine some light on the ever growing problem of racial profiling. I must say that I do not really agree with one of your authors which is Austin, M. and his take on racial profiling. The reason being that racial profiling might have started out as a great idea, but some were along the line someone crossed them and made it more of targeted race issue. Now, this not just my take on this issue, but with all the court cases being filed for racial profiling death or incidents and the massive reports by the media.
Police brutality remains a common yet controversial topic around the world. Police brutality is “the use of excessive and/or unnecessary force by police when dealing with civilians” (thelawdictionary.org). It’s a topic that segregates communities and makes each other their enemy. Specifically, a white officer has been the enemy of the black community. Unfortunately, the tension between police and blacks grew over the past few decades.
Even if said person is a threat to the officer, himself or the public population. “In this context, public concern about police shootings is understandable. It is wrong, however, to decide that there is an established number of times that cops can shoot people and then condemn officers for exceeding some "quota." (McNamara, J. D., 2004, p.1). Excessive shooting is a sign that maybe that officer should not be handling a firearm.
