Most Hated Lifesaver of All Time This product awakens disgruntled students at untimely hours across campuses and schools across the nation. There should be one of these in each and every building in America. It is so necessary that everyone have one that there are laws in all 50 states requiring that one of these be installed and tested regularly. Yes, I am talking about the fire alarm. There are over 132,000 public and private K-12 schools and over 2,600 universities across the nation (U.S. Department of Education). It is highly likely that as a kid, you were subject to random fire drills during the school day usually about once a month. These drills came as a surprise every time but were a break from the boring day of elementary schooling. However, after being in college for just over 4 months, it has become the bane of my existence. But don’t tell me you wouldn’t be peeved if you found out that your 8 AM lecture was …show more content…
The first designs included heat detectors and the ionization chamber was not mass produced until the 1970’s and cost around $125 with a few hundred thousand sold per year. However, a major concern that smoke detectors and fire alarms fail to address is electrical fires that occur within the walls of buildings. New developments in the 21st century use piezoelectric transducers to detect the sound of drywall expanding when exposed to rapid heating. This will be especially helpful when incorporated into buildings with extensive electrical systems as they have a higher risk of electrical fires. If I were a designer of fire alarms, I would design a device that had a piezoelectric transducer that was capable of detecting the slight difference in sound between a rapidly heated wall versus a normal wall. This would bring a sense of security to the customer that extended farther than just the inside of the building, but rather inside the walls as
Metal Detectors for Schools School safety is always a major concern that is an important aspect for the adults and students. In history, various situations such as the Columbine shooting have raised concerns involving weapons on campuses that result in injuries or even death. A solution that some have implemented is the addition of metal detectors. However, schools should not install metal detectors because they require money and supervision, can be avoided to allow weapon entry, and alter the feel of a school environment negatively for the students.

Would you want to live in fear? Especially at a place that you feel safe. A place that you are required to go to by law. A place that children roam the hallways, learning and having fun. Can you imagine, going to this place every day, until one.
But when a school is not safe, that can interfere with the student 's academics. There have been many instances of danger in schools in the past, that has led to tragedies. An answer to this dilemma is the use of metal detectors. They are effective and increase safety that can assist in ending violence in school environments. To prevent violence from happening again in schools, metal detectors should be installed in every public
Resolutions are vehemently being sought to protect schools from possible attacks and to objectively eradicate deadly school shootings altogether. Commonly, security officers are placed in schools in hopes that increased surveillance will inhibit violent outbreaks (Crawford and Burns 2016). Mixed evaluations have been found in association with security officers, while some benefits reportedly transpire, experiences of disparaging consequences remain a regrettable reality as well (Crawford and Burns 2016). Additionally, active shooter drills routinely occur at schools across the nation, however, as Jillian Peterson and James Densley report in their CNN article titled, “The Usual Approach to School Security Isn’t Working,” studies indicate that
Imagine being in a public area such as a mall or a theater and some random nut-job comes in with a gun threatening to shoot everyone. Now imagine this in a school setting. People are in school and they hear the spontaneous gun fire. Consequently, bloodcurdling screams are littered throughout the building. As petrifying and daunting as this may sound, this kind of scene from horror movies is rampant throughout the United States.
Ever since the inception of this country 240 years ago, guns have been an integral part of the American identity; a sense of lawlessness, individualism, personal autonomy and freedom. They were the tools that liberated us, and gave us independence over a tyrannical, unrepresentative empire. However, in more recent years, these tools have been used more and more frequently in mass shootings, some of which are occurring at schools, targeting teachers and children. Since the infamous shooting at Columbine High School 19 years ago, we have had several shootings at schools, and we tend to get “thoughts and prayers”, a gesture with good intentions, but little actual progress made. This problem can be contributed to the increasing power of guns, and a lack of mental health coverage, gun

Unfortunately, this is just one example of police brutality, an instance when police use unnecessary force when either they are unarmed or are complying with orders.
