Introduction
As we already know UV (aka sunlight and artificial UV lighting) can cause forms of skin cancers. It seems to be common sense now days but we really don’t know how or why specifically and we also don’t really know what preventative measures actually work. As we grow up every day we expose ourselves to sunlight but unless we are going out to the beach or pool, we don’t take preventative measures to keep our skin safe from radiation and some are even attempting to do the complete opposite for beautification. After reading a few articles and doing some research on my own I have reached a valid argument to explain a few reasons why preventative measures need to be taken. In this essay I will first explain how radiation is bad for you skin and why we need to take these measures to fight for our lives.
Then I will help educate you on how we can add a few things to our daily routines so we can stay healthier and happier in our everyday life.

First let’s explain what Ultra violet radiation is. Ultraviolet radiation definition is radiation in the part of the electromagnetic spectrum where wavelengths are just shorter than those of ordinary, visible violet light but longer than those of x-rays. In other words it’s dangerous to play with. It is unstable molecules known as reactive oxygen species. (Source: Journal of Aesthetic Nursing (J AESTHETIC NURS), Jul/Aug2015; 4(6): 276-280. 5p) Lorna Bowes, who is an Aesthetic Nurse and Director, Aesthetic Source, Bedford, explains in her article that long exposure to UVR (ultra violet radiation) will cause an increase in age due to the damage on the skin from the radiation and could eventually lead to skin cancer. Even on a cloudy day the over 80% of the sun’s rays penetrates the clouds and continue to damage your skin and when that sun light hits the surface, it will increase the power
Family Rules Under the age 18, getting one bad sunburn doubles the chances of getting melanoma. Melanoma is known as the most serious type of skin cancer that appears when the cells that produce melanin become cancerous. In order to prevent this fatal cancer, parents must be responsible for putting sunscreen on their children. Also, parents should set a good example for their kids.
Lots of people want to obtain a great suntan for it gives a pleasing overall look. Nonetheless there was a great concern intended for natural tanning method. Long in order to sun is usually resulting in skin cancers. The reason being the actual increasing pollution along with depletion associated with Ozone layer this protects mother nature coming from Sun’s harmful Ultra violet rays. To make the getting brownish naturally procedure easier, simple and easy harmless, tanning booths were unveiled into the sector.
Although it may seem that it is common knowledge that UV tanning beds are harmful to the human body, 7.8 million adult women and 1.9 million adult men in the United States still tan indoors. Thirty-five percent of American adults, 59 percent of college students, and 17 percent of teens have reported using a tanning bed in their lifetime. In Oregon, according to the FDA all sunlamp products must have a warning label, an accurate timer, an emergency stop control, and include an exposure schedule and protective goggles, but it should not stop there. There needs to be a heavier tax imposed on indoor tanning customers. Currently, there is a 10% tax that indoor tanners must pay.
On an average day there are about a million people who go tanning on a regular basis, and of those million people, most are younger, between the ages of sixteen and twenty-nine (Hochman). People who use tanning beds before age of thirty-five have a seventy-five percent increased risk of developing melanoma (Fellingham). There are approximately 65,000 new cases nationwide of melanoma and about 9,000 deaths each year from the most preventable disease (Salsberg). Researchers said that there is a death every hour because of melanoma
“Warning: That Tan Could Be Hazardous” by Sabrina Tavernise appeared on New York Times, in the January 10, 2015. In her article, Tavernise insists that indoor tanning provides people with skin cancer which might bring them to having melanoma (the most serious type of skin cancer). Sabrina Tavernize says that many factors, including genetics, are at play with skin cancer, one of the largest is the ultraviolet light, which people get during tanning process, it exposures its non burning ray to getting melanoma. Teenage girls from different states, who were intervied said, that tan skin makes them feel “… more confident and more comfortable...,” when they walk around, but they don’t realize what the risk is. According to the information used in the article, tanning beds account approximately 400,000 cases of skin cancer in the United States each year, with 6,000 cases of melanoma.
With a simple phrase in any search engine, you will find countless articles showing definitive proof that tanning of any kind can be harmful. Artificial UV exposure such as tanning beds tend to be the argument of the decade waging war on those who care about other's health way too much vs people who want to appear darker for looks only to be seen 30 years later as a wrinkled, and leathery sun spot attraction. There tends to be little ground on the people in the middle. To those who maybe go tanning for a week straight for a wedding or a comparable large occasion, a tanning bed may not be life threatening. Many who carry a genotype of melanoma will not be aware due to it staying dormant; however, very little UV ray exposure could act as a catalyst to that same carrier.
The effects of indoor tanning General Purpose: To persuade Specific Purpose: To persuade the audience not to use indoor tanning beds. Thesis Statement: Organizational Pattern: problem-cause solution Introduction Attention Getter: There is an unexplained increase in skin cancer among people under the age of forty. 30 million people visit an indoor facility each year according to the indoor tanning association. That is 10 percent of the U.S. population voluntarily exposing themselves to UV radiation which causes cancer.
The skin is an organ and the largest in the body. Not only does your skin protect you from harmful contaminants, such as bacteria and viruses, but it protects your skin from environmental toxins. However, the one thing that harms the skin the most is the sun. Skin cancer has become a very common occurrence in residents of Jasper, Dubois County, and its surrounding areas because we spend a lot of time enjoying the outdoors.
What’s your thought on tanning? Do you think tanning in a salon isn’t harmful? Do you think tanning outside is more harmful. Tanning indoors or even tanning outdoors is very harmful to you. With outdoor tanning you can prevent the intake of UVB and UVA rays by properly using sunblock but in tanning beds you cannot.
Jeannie Allen, author of the article, “Ultraviolet Radiation: How it Affects Life on Earth,” published her work in September 6, 2001. In Allen’s article, engrossing, yet concerning facts about UV radiation are introduced. Allen writes in her second paragraph, “UV radiation from the sun has always played important roles in our environment, and affects nearly all living organisms...Yet UV radiation at different wavelengths differs in its effects, and we have to live with the harmful effects as well as the helpful ones.” The author claims that ultraviolet radiation has both a negative and positive impact towards life on Earth. Allen goes on to elaborate on these positive and negative effects of UV radiation.
Intrinsic factors and extrinsic factors, both contribute to this process. As discussed earlier, UV-induced damage to the DNA causes a poor renewal of the skin. When exposed to harsh sunlight, an individual is also exposed to the UV light that comes along with it. Excessive exposure can cause premature aging in certain individuals and also is observed as severe pigmentation and sunburns as well. The antioxidants, namely vitamin E and vitamin C are majorly targeted by the UV light and thus, reduce the antioxidant capacity of the epidermis on prolonged exposure.
Relevance of topic to audience: Although the sun is necessary for life, too much sun exposure can lead to adverse health effects. More than 1 million people in the United States are diagnosed with skin cancer each year (EPA). So, everybody is subjected to these potential adverse effects of overexposure to the sun. C. Established Credibility: My family has a history of skin cancer D. Thesis: Many people do not use sun protection on a daily bases and are unaware of the health effects of sun exposure that can be easily preventive by using sun protection. E. Preview: Today I want to educate and motivate you to wear sun protection by explaining how sun exposure affects everyone, that there is no excuse for not protecting yourself with all the different kinds of sun protection products available, and finally, to remind you that the simple step of applying sunblock eliminates potential and preventable health effects.
A survey conducted by the American Academy of Dermatology found that 69% of male and 61% of female respondents thought people look better with a tan, and 60% of men and 54% of women said that a tan gave them a healthy appearance. Following the declaration of UV rays as a known carcinogen, the UV tanning industry experienced a rapid decline. However, it had the opposite effect on the sunless tanning industry which is growing steadily and has been for almost a decade. The self-tanning industry has exploded in the US in recent years as consumers have tried to attain their healthy summer glow in a safer manner (De Castella,
