The skin is an organ and the largest in the body. Not only does your skin protect you from harmful contaminants, such as bacteria and viruses, but it protects your skin from environmental toxins. However, the one thing that harms the skin the most is the sun. Skin cancer has become a very common occurrence in residents of Jasper, Dubois County, and its surrounding areas because we spend a lot of time enjoying the outdoors. If you have suspicions that you may have skin cancer or you have already been diagnosed with it, Dr. Jason T. Basal Cell Carcinoma-Many basal cell carcinomas simply look like a small bump that has a pearl color to it. In most cases, it is found in areas that are prone to an excessive amount of sun, like the nose. While this cancerous tumor will spread to surrounding areas, it does not spread to other areas of the body.
2. Squamous Cell Carcinomas: Squamous Cell Carcinoma is also found on the body that receives a lot of sun exposure. They, along with Basal Cell Carcinomas, are usually found on the facial region and the hands and may look like a sore that will not heal. Unlike Basal Cell Carcinoma, this type of skin cancer can spread to your lymph nodes.
3. Melanoma: This type of skin cancer shows up in the pigment of the skin. Many are often not diagnosed early enough because they look like moles or other discolorations on the skin. However, Melanoma cancer will have irregular shapes and an oddly shaped border. There may also be wider variations in the colors.
