In 2012, New York became the first state in the history of the United States of America to ban drinks size larger than 17 oz., claiming it was ‘life threatening’ by consuming too much of it (nytimes.com). As a country, people have to realize what harm foods such as these do to the human population. Foods are ruining people’s lives and their health every single day. The government should have a say in our diets to ensure a happy and healthy life for all people.
The government needs to have control in parts of our diets. Many people ask if our population is slowly ruining themselves by not watching their weight. The answer is yes, our population is slowly growing partly obese and overweight The USA overweight or obese rate in both males and females is 69%, which is fairly high. And out of that, T the average for obesity rate is only 35%, meaning that only 31% of our country can manage their weight and stay healthy by themselves, without the government’s help and unnecessary restrictions (niddk.nih.gov). The government should first start changing the diets of the younger age group since this age group is most malleable to change. The disturbing fact of the truth is that over 20% of children from the age group 2-5 years old are in fact overweight or obese (cdc.gov). People every day say that “Take care of the future generations, they one day will change the world” (brainyquote.com). If the government doesn’t take action now, our future generation will change the world in an undesirable way. Not only that, but 38.2% of 6-19 year olds are also overweight or obese (cdv.gov). It is said that by 2030 the obesity rate for both adults and children will raise to over 50%, and this can and will cause problems for the people

Food Prices and Obesity: Evidence and Policy Implications for Taxes and Subsidies written by Lisa M. Powell and Frank J. Chaloupka also agrees with these articles by notifying that the price of a calorie is cheaper in unhealthy foods. One possible solution that these authors propose is simply to lower the price of healthy foods or raise the price of unhealthy foods. Unlike Peralta and Grabmeier, Powell and Chaloupka also link obesity to tobacco use.
Radley Balko’s essay “What You Eat Is Your Business, in They Say, I Say, the author argues that the government should take more targeted initiatives in dealing with obesity. Within the last 15 years, the United States government has implemented numerous laws and initiatives to try to make America healthy again. However, are they working? The daily lives of Americans seem to revolve around food, whether it be eating healthy and following the food pyramid, or on the other end of the spectrum, eating fast food for every meal and snacking on junk food. There are larger issues that the government could be handling, yet they choose this obesity epidemic over pressing day-to-day problems.
Each year, there are about 112,000 deaths from obesity that are preventable. In the past few decades, the number of cases of obesity has been on the rise in the United States. It has tripled among children and doubled among adults. In 1990, Connecticut’s obesity rate was at 10.4 percent. Then, in 2000, it was at 16.0 percent and currently it’s at 26.0 percent.
Saletan gives more than enough information on how, when, and what is happening worldwide about obesity. Although he does not give a solution, he still made an eye opening experience while reading this essay. Obesity is now happening worldwide. Yes I said it, worldwide according to Saletan. “Egyptian, Mexican, and South African women are as fat as American”, he claims in the second paragraph.
There is a high chance that people can get obesity because they don’t eat healthy, that is how some people get sick from obesity. This country is a democracy meaning we get to vote for our leaders and our laws.
The government has been taking more and more control over what we have been consuming. They have too many worries going on in America to try to judge us on how we eat. The government shouldn’t have any involvement in how we eat and what we need to do to limit obesity in America. The Government may have control over our meals and diets, but they also don’t understand it is recommended for men to consume 2,700 calories and 2,200 for women.
The issue is childhood obesity, and it is only accelerating as a percentage of children in both America and all western nations of the world. Childhood Obesity is an issue relevant to all who consider themselves part of American society and it has profound adverse effects economically, physically for those afflicted with the issue, and mentally for those who live an obese childhood or within the family unit of a household with at least one obese child. The scope of the issue is massive and the impact of the consequences dire in many accounts. There is hope to reverse course and change the way of American-western living, and it starts with understanding the size and
Americans today are well-known for their eating habits. With all the options the food industry gives us it makes it hard to go to the grocery store and resist picking up that bag of barbeque-flavored chips or blueberry flavored candy. Due to these processed foods obesity is a growing epidemic in our country and who is to blame for it? In an article entitled “What You Eat is Your Business” by Radley Balko, Balko argues for less government intervention. Balko believes is it our responsibility to take care of ourselves and make it a priority.
It is just common sense. At least two-thirds of all American adults are considered obese (Park), not including the children and teens. But a government influence on our diet alone will not be able to solve this issue. They need the motivation. They need to become used to smaller and healthier portions.
Obesity has gained a lot of attention in the recent years especially in the 21st century. Right now in America, there is an ongoing epidemic. The cause is not by viruses or bacteria, but by human nature. There is no one way to solve this serious problem. With growing body sizes and serious medical problems associated with obesity, it is a problem that needs to be addressed and changed.
If changes are not made now, then people will soon be living shorter lives and suffer most of their life from obesity and the health issues that come with it. The Government should regulate what Americans consume in order to curb obesity rates and potentially save lives. Childhood obesity is a big issue that affects children every day. A third of the child population below the age of 20 are considered obese. The way Americans eat today and the lack of physical activity is leading to serious health risk that will continue to get worse as children age.

People need to take initiative to stop eating food that’s not healthy for them because at the end of the day it’s all up to you to stay healthy. Our country become less responsible for their own health and start to blame everyone else for their own health but look at us not eating right and wondering why they are not feeling good, you’re not doing the right thing. This world is full of
