America is one of the most obese countries in the world, known for apple pie and an excessive amount of McDonald’s. As a culture, there is a lack of self control when it comes to the foods we consume. People often over consume and over indulge, which has wreaked havoc on the health and well being of those who give in to these temptations. The issue is that large corporations and even our own government play a role in helping feed the problem; they care more about profitability and benefiting the business than the health of the consumer. The health of Americans is declining and more chronic diseases and health problems are appearing as a result of unhealthy diets, but there are many different methods that can help fix this issue.

“Why Shame Won’t Stop Obesity” Obesity is a huge social issue in America, and the reputation of fast food and junk food doesn’t make it any better. More Americans are developing critical health issues due to obesity. In “Why Shame Won’t Stop Obesity” by Dhruv Khullar, Khullar states that shaming obesity will not stop it. We must recognize that we have created a food environment, but there is much we can do and should do to reverse that trend. I have to agree with Khullar and the statements that he made in the article about shaming obesity, why there is so much obesity, and steps to reverse the trend of obesity.

Each year, there are about 112,000 deaths from obesity that are preventable. In the past few decades, the number of cases of obesity has been on the rise in the United States. It has tripled among children and doubled among adults. In 1990, Connecticut’s obesity rate was at 10.4 percent. Then, in 2000, it was at 16.0 percent and currently it’s at 26.0 percent.

Saletan gives more than enough information on how, when, and what is happening worldwide about obesity. Although he does not give a solution, he still made an eye opening experience while reading this essay. Obesity is now happening worldwide. Yes I said it, worldwide according to Saletan. “Egyptian, Mexican, and South African women are as fat as American”, he claims in the second paragraph.

In “Obesity within the United Sates” Richard Dirksen defines obesity as “weighing roughly 30 or more pounds over a healthy weight” (Dirksen 1). The psychical appearance of obesity is something that in most cases is easy to tell. But the side effects of obesity are what remain silent for long periods of time. In most cases people who are obese tend to shy away from others because they feel simply as, if they do not fit in. Yet they continue to live a gluten full life style regardless of what others think as it satisfies their hunger and taste buds which is starting to make obesity a more common trend.

It’s to no surprise that obesity is an epidemic in America and is continuing to grow at an alarming rate. Statistics say that more than one-third (34.9% or 78.6 million) of U.S. adults are obese and being overweight is harming the nation by worsening the health burden, raising health costs, and undermining productivity (Greenhalgh). Sadly the responsibility for this epidemic is mostly put on Blacks and Latinos, who have the highest percentage of obesity. Latinos more so have sparked this for concern due to their large numbers in the United States and something must be done about this to help bring down these numbers and help the overall population’s health. “New York City’s Board of Health today passed a rule banning super-sized drinks at restaurants, concession stands and other eateries.” (Doc A). Individuals in the United States are overweight because they do not know how to limit themselves. If the government were to control one of the main reasons people are obese, then several people would not be overweight because the government would take care of the problem. Banning sugary drinks over 16-ounces would help people lower their sugar intake, which would help people stay in excellent health.

The high demand for medical care also increases the financial burden on the families and therefore the community as well. As one can see the community health is greatly effected by the high rates of obesity among its individuals. Children in particular have a massive effect because not only are they the future of that community, but they also influence the schools in that region. Healthy People 2020 regard obesity in America as a very serious problem especially among children. It is such a major issue because childhood obesity easily leads to obesity in adulthood that increases the risks for heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, stroke, and cancer (Nutrition).

Today in our abundance of filling grocery stores and fast food restaurants, most is comforted in knowing when and where their next meal will come from. Although, days in the past where food shortages ran rampant; sanitation was unheard of; and obesity was the last obstacle the American people thought to face have faded. Yet, in the beginning of this 21st century, we are nearing the 40% percent mark of obese adults, and the 13.4% percent back in 1962 has become a short, but a distant memory. The average adult today is heavier compared to the 1950 's, due to changes in our socioeconomic structure; sedentary lifestyle changes; and easy access to unhealthy food choices. As a hole there should be more restaurants that promote healthy food choices.
