Personal Profile Essay

Section 1: Professional Development Plan For most of my life I have been motivated to help people so when I made the decision to continue my education at Walden University, I knew that I was ready for the journey. I am currently seeking a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and I am expected to graduate in the winter of 2025. This paper was written on June 30th, 2023, with the intent of further understanding my motivations for seeking this degree as well as visualizing the type of counselor I want to be in the future. Throughout this paper, I also discuss what is expected of me throughout my degree program, counseling career, and overall professional development.

Upon meeting me, not many people know that I am a first generation American. However, they are usually interested in the orgin of my last name. I am in fact Ukranian. Both my parents and my older sister were born in Ukraine. They immigrated to America in 1992 because of religious persecution that they were facing.

I’m very proud with my character I have shown. Outstanding character to me is being responsible, honest, and generous. As I feel happy helping others out with a subject they may struggle with. Now I don 't just apply my character at school, but also outside in the community. Personally I feel that it’s important to give back to communities.

To begin with, my top strength is positivity. According to Rath, “ You are generous with praise, quick to smile, and always on the lookout for the positive in the situation” (Rath p141). I believe it is always important to be positive regardless of how bad a situation is. My job is to motivate others when they become pessimistic of a certain task. This strength is essential in both school and a career as neither a classmate or a co-worker wants to surround him or herself with negativity that makes for a long day.

Personal Interest in the Counseling Field And Career Goals The counseling field I am working towards becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), which will give me the opportunity to work with clients that need person- centered therapy. The counseling profession appeals to me, because I am able to provide a comfortable safe space for my clients that will enable them to heal under my care. I understand that there are mental issues that need to be addressed, and there’s value in counseling because it gives people the option to seek positive ways to deal with their problems and concerns. I have just recently begun to hate writing. Not all writing, just the kind that leaves me staring at a blank computer screen or clean piece of paper for countless minutes with no idea of how to start off in which to captivate my readers, especially my professor. I will ritually rack my brain for dozens of wasted moments, deciding on how to begin, continue, and complete an essay assignment, while trying to avoid any obvious signs within my work itself that my apprehension towards writing is just as strong as the wildfires currently burning Washington State. Research writing is however, a different, more alleviating and empowering type of writing because it allows my subconscious to camouflage its worries and impotency behind objective facts

My Ideal Self Who/what do you want to achieve/have, why? In the shorter term (3 years), I want to graduate from HELP University’s Degree of Psychology in first-class honours. I understand claims stating such academic achievement is merely a graduation certificate, without guarantee of work opportunities. However, my aim is not motivated towards work opportunities or anything materialistic; I just want to appreciate and value every learning opportunity.

Strengths: As a student one of my strengths is organization. I can say I can keep my school materials and notebooks organized in a way that I and others can comprehend. The reason I can say I am organized is because, I have hardly ever had in the past or present any issues with trying to find homework or assignments because I always kept my materials for each class organized and in a place I could easily find. Another strength I have is social skills. I can believe that I communicate with others well in a group.

I have always hated writing about myself, and I always dreaded assignments in school where I had to describe myself. I always wanted to avoid doing these assignments because I did not want to sound narcissistic, or self-absorbed. I dislike people like that now, because I used to be one of those people. It took many lessons learned before I humbled myself; I am still learning to humble myself today with recent experiences I have had. Although I hate to write about myself, I have always liked to reflect on myself.
