The professional nursing values I believe are things you can be taught and some you cannot. Nurses are special individuals who ultimately want to care for and help others as much as they can. I agree with all of these values and believe some I will need to work on myself such as competence, illness prevention and patient education. Others I believe I have based on my experience I have already had while caring for others. Some of the qualities I believe I have include: caring, compassion, dependability, empathy, focusing on the patient- defining quality of life, having a holistic patient centered care, kindness, openness to learning, respect for others their dignity and worth and sensitivity.

Being a nurse is not always as easy and picture perfect as people paint it to be. A nurse is expected to act perfectly professional, even when tears, anger and all-around emotions are begging to come out. A nurse must always be the one that has their life together, especially when others do not. They are there to be the ones to hold and care for others in desperate times of need. Nurses are expected to be more than just a nurse, but rather an advocate, caregiver, support system and professional.

What does nursing mean to me? Nursing means helping people heal, meeting their needs while they are in your care, listening to concerns, protecting them from harm, and educating them how to care for themselves while treating them with dignity, compassion and respect and giving of yourself to the care of people and community. It is having compassion for people and their health and being a humanitarian, making sure they receive the best care possible. Nurses must also treat families of patients with kindness, realizing they are going through a stressful situation also. Nursing is a responsibility to provide the best care regardless of the patient’s age, race, religion, sex, disability, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or their past.

Christian nurses are given the unique ability to provide compassionate and spiritual care to a variety of patients. The purpose of this paper is to explain my definition of nursing as a caring art, describe how Christian faith impacts caring, describe my personal philosophy of nursing while identifying my own personal values and beliefs, and discus how my beliefs impact my nursing practice. To me, nursing as an art of caring, is defined as caring for the whole person, building meaningful relationships, and providing compassionate care. Holistic nursing care involves healing a person physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I believe the art of nursing is embedded in the steps we take to address problems that are not simply physical.

In order to posit one’s personal philosophy he or she must have a clear understanding regarding self and the specific area (Nursing). The Cambridge Online Dictionary (2016) defined personal as “ relating or belonging to a single or particular person rather than to a group or an organization”. Doheny et al. (1997) defined philosophy as “beliefs of a person or group of persons and reveals underlying values and attitude regarding an area (as cited in Masters, 2017).

It is having compassion for people and their health, being a humanitarian, and making sure patients receive the best care possible. Nurses must also deal with families of patients with gentleness and kindness, realizing they are going through a stressful situation also.

In the course Nursing 110, I was asked to provide a mission statement on how I would pride myself in regards to my future practice and profession. I hoped to become a hardworking, persevering and compassionate nurse who creates a safe place for patients to become healthy again. To this day, all of those qualities are something I am still in the process of becoming, but that I am guaranteed to be. Not only am I a nursing student, I am a student nurse assistant floating to different floors each week frequently working with different patients. I do not see nursing as just a career, I see nursing as caring for people who are unable to provide for themselves, while being selfless in action.

While working full- time as a technician, I attended college and quickly took all the needed courses to apply into a nursing program. I was attending college and had a full time job. Having both challenged and excited me, since I was one step closer to having my career; just as I promised my grandmother. I finally got accepted into nursing school, graduated, and became a Registered Nurse. Every single patient I cared for, I used my past experience with my family, and used that as my foundation for my bedside manner.

The Making of a Nurse There are many people who do not know of the impacts nurses have on patients, as they care for their patients physically, emotionally, and spiritually. At times, nurses can be taken for granted by a number of different people. It is usually when people are at their most vulnerable do they see the significant roles nurses play. Nurses can truly bring joy and hope in patients in the worst of times, as there may not always be treatment readily available. As explained by Shalof (2007), “[…] while there may be times when [nurses] may decide to withdraw treatment, [nurses] never withdraw care” nurses never give up on their patients, which is an enlightening notion for me (p. 122).

Personal Philosophy of Nursing Nursing philosophy combines ethics and morality to conceptualize and define the nursing profession while also explaining its significance to humankind. A philosophy of nursing takes into account a nurse’s own personal experience and reflects their beliefs about how nursing fits into society and how their actions contribute to providing optimal care. Nurses having their own personal philosophy is important because it provides a guideline for each nurse to establish their own morals and allows them to stay grounded in their professional identity.
