Some college students are working part-time jobs and are full-time students. Perhaps, working through college will not always cover all of a student's education expenses including books, supplies, room and board. If free tuition is given, students will have further time to educate themselves. Moreover, college tuition and prices are at an all-time high. Each year, prices are rising higher and higher.

Is college worth the money? This has been a question asked by millions of high school seniors, current college students, graduates, and parents across the United States. Many argue that it opens more doors over those who chose not to attend while others argue that we send too many students all while increasing the national student loan debt. Author Marty Nemko argues in his article, “We Send too Many Students to College,” that too many students are pushed to go to college. Nemko assumes that those reading his article are parents questioning if college is the right decision for their child.

A rising issue in today’s society is deciding whether or not college is worth the cost. There is an extreme amount of pressure that is forced upon high school students by parents, teachers, and peers to further their education and attend college. However, there is research that challenges the thought that college is the best possible path for a person to take. College may be a great investment for some people, but it is not meant for everyone. This is supported by the arguments that colleges are expensive, jobs do not always require a college degree, and students are forced to choose a lifestyle before being exposed to the real world.

The cost of college has escalated out of control and the cost of college grows faster than the rate of inflation. In order to cut the costs of my education, I plan to work part time and contribute some of my earnings to my education.

In addition, many students hold a part-time job while they are in school, and some work full-time, this path can be very demanding. It can be especially difficult to juggle a full-time job and a full-time course load, and they cannot afford to go to school without working, so they find that trying to work while going to school is too much at once. For instance, people find that they need to start working immediately after school, perhaps because they have bills to pay, they have family obligations, or college is just too far out of reach financially. Parents across the nation have found it much harder to pay for their children’s education due to these rising costs. For example, in states like Arizona, Georgia, and Oklahoma “parents have seen a 77 percent increase in costs. In Georgia, it's 75 percent, and in Washington state, 70 percent” (citation). These rising costs would be especially challenging for young adults. Working for a college education is a challenge, and many cannot overcome it.

If many did not work treacherous hours they would not be able to pay a house payment, car payment, and food. Without money none of that is possible. Many of these community college students work either a full time, or part time job. Some community colleges are cheaper than others, but it does cost a lot of money either way which forces these community college students to have a work life and be less involved in school. Therefore, community college students that work have to balance their time between work life and school life which could be a struggle for the students that need a lot of time on their school work.

A part-time job will not amount to the cost of school and living. Although costs are universally high, some of the cost may rely upon the location of the student in relation to the location of the school. Although there are no solutions to the financial challenges of a college student, there are ways to cope with the issue. The best ways to limit financial stress are buying used textbooks, eating at home, applying for scholarships, applying for financial aid, and making a weekly budget plan. Scholarships and financial aid are given to people who qualify; however, these aids do not pose solutions to the problem.
