One of the most well-known works of literature without a doubt is Willa Cather’s “Paul’s Case.” The story is famous because of the richness of writing that Cather employs in making a formidable story one that can help people understand the current times and the world in which we live in especially regarding naturalism and regionalism. This is an interesting story with twists and turns about a young Calvinist man, whom because of circumstances of life felt he does not belong to this life. Paul’s life is filled by people who push him to the limits and make him feel unwanted, among these are; his abusive father, the uncaring teachers and also his classmates that have greatly misunderstood him (Cather and Schlenk 19). It would be justified to say that this is a classic case study on temperaments.

Has anyone ever told you “The truth will set you free” have you told the truth after that? Well in most all cases that is the truth, in the novel Tangerine by Edward Bloor the main character Paul is able to see the truth but he does not say anything about it. Untill a very tragic event happened his own brother killed a person and Paul knew that but did not say anything about it. The person that died was Luis a person that Paul knew very well. Erik Paul’s brother was a famous football star.
In the book Tangerine, By Edward Bloor, an important choice paul made was when he chose to change schools and go to Tangerine Middle School. Paul chose to change schools so he could restart his school year and reputation, and is shown when the author states,” Football and soccer season happen at the same time, dad, it’s ok if you can’t pay attention to both, just let me go to Tangerine Middle School. I wouldn’t be the waterboy, I would be the goalie”(Bloor 194). This choice impacted paul and the plot greatly, which is stated when the author says,” I want to go to Tangerine MS with no IEP.

Positive > Negative In society, there’s conformist and nonconformist. Conformist accept the established practices and beliefs. Nonconformist go against the established practices and beliefs. An example of a conformist is Mark Jennings from the book,“That Was Then, This Is Now” by S.E. Hinton.
Willa Cather’s short story, “Paul’s Case” is about a young man who is determined to make his aspirations a reality by all means necessary. That meant being deceitful as a start of gaining control and social status and telling lies to get to where he felt like he belonged, but where did he belong? This desire was the beginning of a journey that would eventually leave him with nothing. There is something unusual about Paul, something that can only be explained by his demeanor and actions throughout the story. With that said, I intend to construct a complete character analysis of Paul as he searches for satisfaction.
