Not many have influenced and impacted the profession of education as largely as Dr. Richard DuFour. DuFour’s dedication and passion for teachers, students, and education as a whole will go unmatched for decades to come, and will never be forgotten. Richard DuFour has brought attention to educational professional learning communities, teacher collaboration, and educational research, all focusing on the main goal of student achievement and learning. PLC at Work focuses more on a student-centered culture, and individual teachers meeting each week and following specific processes to ensure success for each individual student. Throughout the process, teachers list essential skills desired for each unit, how much time will be allotted, and how they plan to assess the knowledge. The team will then look at results and determine what did and did not work, and how to teach the concepts better if many students were unsuccessful. They also focus on how to challenge the high-achieving students. An important aspect of this model is that the teachers themselves will have a voice and choice of “when and how” they decide to teach such material. By giving teachers this leadership, the DuFours found teachers held more ownership and proprietorship in not only their teaching styles and strategies, but in the way they were dedicated in the time spent on collaborating and sharing their best tips and teaching

This desire manifests itself in many ways, yet at its core is building relationships with students and teachers and then extending these relationships to families and the community. With students, I seek to be visible, greeting the students at the door and working to learn their names. When discipline is necessary, I believe that restorative correction is the best avenue to change behaviors while maintaining relationships. As teachers spend the most time with students during a typical school day, they are essential team members in improving educational outcomes and promoting an inclusive culture. I detail my strategies for working alongside teachers in the subsequent question; however, I strive to support them by creating a culture of trust, safety, training, and collaboration through professional learning communities.

All teams will create and implement team norms and focused agendas for discussion and planning to increase effectiveness of common planning time. When teachers feel isolated, or actually are isolated, they have to deal with stressors and difficulties alone. Sometimes that leads teachers to get stuck in their ways and perhaps even burn out. Students suffer and their success is halted when teachers are burnt out and alone. The use of professional learning communities has provided an opportunity for teachers to collaborate. Working as a team will increase the likelihood that the learning going on during the collaboration will transfer to practice.
