Patient Teaching Philosophy

Nurses and physicians need to express themselves in a clear and precise manner, their message should rely on verification and collaborative problem solving. They need to displaying a calm and supportive demeanor under stress, maintenance of mutual respect, and authentic understanding of the unique role (Robinson, Gorman, Slimmer, Yudkowsky, 2010). Not everyone was born being able to express themselves in such a manner, therefore providing the necessary education and skills will help both nurses and physicians gain the confidence and competence they need to work

Roles of the Professional Nurse The role of the professional nurse in today's healthcare setting continues to expand as our healthcare delivery system in the United States changes. Historically, nurses have delivered care in a system that has been "illness" centered. Increases in knowledge of disease, coupled with a desire to decrease the costs of delivering health care have shifted the U.S. model of care to one of prevention (IOM, 2010, p. 1-1). The professional nurse continues to have eight interrelated roles in caring for their patients.

Bringing the learner into such difficult and emotionally charged situations requires that faculty can both role-model appropriate skills and commit to prepare and debrief the learner for effective learning to occur.

Nursing is a most trusted and gratifying profession. As a nurse educator, I will express my passion for teaching by incorporating features such as clinical assessments, practical application of theory, evaluation, and role modeling into advanced nursing practice, from previous experiences and current experience and clinical practicum to find success and gratification in students chosen profession as well empowering leaners to develop their own strengths, beliefs, and personal attributes to become a good professional. The nurse must ensure that all staff are properly trained, medications are correct and up to date, all children must have access to healthcare, and nutritional considerations must be taken into account. Uniquely, nursing is its own world in the healthcare system, in which people come together to provide a further approach in the care of the patient. Nurses have shared values across the board, which include: holistic (physical, mental, and emotional) care, patient confidentiality, integrity and diversity. Essentially, when the values are brought together, it creates the perfect environment in which highly satisfactory patient care can be achieved. In nursing, to attain good patient care, three main genres that must be met are: verbal communication, nonverbal communication, and documentation. The importance of these three genres makes, or breaks, the care being provided.

Investing my time in the care of my patient gives the opportunity to not only assist them in a difficult situation, but also to learn more about their diagnosis and the treatment, while comparing it to what we have learned in class. For example, I had a patient that suffered from Sickle Cell Disease and came to the ER during a crisis. Correlating this case to the books and the content learned in class, these patients receive at least 1000 mL of fluids, pain medication, and oxygen. Additionally, I had a patient with meningitis. This individual presented with common symptoms such as nuchal rigidity, muscle pain, fever, and chills.

All patients are unique in their own way and we cannot base our assumptions solely on what we have experienced before because no two patients are the same. They can present different signs and symptoms for the same disease, progress at different rates and come from different socio-economic backgrounds. The lessons I have learned are that I need to be able to adjust my nursing practice as I uncover new information. The patient information we receive prior to clinical presents a very narrow picture of who the patient is and how they are dealing with their illness.

As a student nurse, whose ultimate goal is to help people, and give the best care to patients. Educating the patient on their health issues, helping families get access to vital care and information in the community and hospitals is my role as a nurse. Creating an interconnection between myself and my patients will be my priority. I know it takes trust, and a healing environment for patients to come to trust nurses in their short or long stay in the hospitals and clinics. I will be a nurse who is willing to learn and ask questions when needed.

Providing care to a patient is a particularly challenging process that requires a great deal of effort from a nurse. A nurse’s ability to give quality care to their patient is an important aspect to a patient’s life both now and in the future. As such, nurses must exhibit specific qualities in their practice in order to maintain the best standard of care for their patients.
