Omens In The Alchemist

Melchizedek directs, "When you are unable to read the omens, they will help you to do so. Always ask an objective question"(30). In the alchemist, omens offer Santiago guidance on his journey and reassure him that the Soul of the World have supported his journey. There are many references made to omens in the alchemist. Paulo Coelho made references to scarab bettles (Arabic), Urim and Thummin (Jewish), Hawks and even the presence of certain characters: Santiago, Melchizedek, the crystal merchant, Englishman, Fatima and the alchemist.

Santiago’s last step to completing his personal legend was walking through the desert, to find his treasure and completing it. The Importance of Perseverance At many times in people’s lives, they consider giving up. This is also true for Santiago, the protagonist in Paulo Coelho's fantasy novel The Alchemist. Santiago is on a journey to find a hidden treasure he saw in a dream. Along this journey he continues to contemplate whether he should just give up, or continue his adventure.

Santiago wanted to the fatima to know that he had fallen in love with her and he didn 't want her to forget about him,but she wanted him to know that for years she dreamt of having to have the hope of a loved one coming back home,and that he had to do what every male in the desert did and go find his treasure,and all she did was stay home and hope for him to come home. He came upon so many challenges along the way with the alchemist,and he had the enough knowledge in order to overcome them,but needed a little push. His heart was always with him talking to him about fear but also excitement about traveling to the pyramids,and when they came upon tribesmen santiago never gave to turn himself into the wind which was their only way out. Paulo Coehlo’s, The Alchemist, explores the Hero’s Journey through the story of a shepherd, Santiago. Throughout the novel, Santiago becomes more aware of his potential as he pursues his Personal Legend. He faces temptations and obstacles as he develops as a character. The hero crosses the threshold when they leave their old reality in search for a new one. Santiago crosses the threshold by selling his sheep and taking a boat to Africa.

In the novel “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho there is a young shepherd named Santiago who is in search for his personal legend. Santiago’s personal legend is to find the treasure at the pyramids. Throughout his journey, there are a lot of emotions especially the emotion fear. Santiago encountered a lot of challenges like crossing the desert, being in a war and turning himself into the wind. He learned the different levels of fear; fearing fear, being in fear, and overcoming fear.

All of these people and objects helped guide Santiago through his journey to get to the pyramids. When Santiago first meets the King of Salem, he is inspiring Santiago to pursue his personal legend. The King says, “In order to find the treasure, you will have to follow the omens. God has prepared a path for everyone to follow.

“Perseverance is failing 19 times and succeeding the 20th.” This quote is the epitome of, Santiago, the boy, In the novel “The Alchemist”. The boy comes across several points where it would be easier to stop his journey and forget his dream, but instead he keeps pushing through till he succeeds, with the help of the omens. The recurring theme of omens in the novel, “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho helps Santiago persevere throughout the novel, by guiding him in the right direction.
