Ask anyone and they will say that we have done a lot of damage to the Earth, but what have we done to ourselves. Today’s society is full of overweight or obese people and it’s killing us at a fast pace. Someone is considered overweight if they have a BMI (Body Mass Index) between 25 and 29 and obese if there BMI is 30 or higher (World Health Organization, n.d.). That being said at least 2.8 million people die each year because they are overweight or obese (World Health Organization, n.d.). To change the world we need to combat obesity!
Being that obesity is the 5th leading cause of deaths worldwide it has become a major issue (EASO, n.d.). Obesity is no longer just in the high income countries we associate it with, it’s now prevalent in middle and low income countries as well. This is cause for concern because now 65% of the world’s population lives in a country where more people die from being overweight or obese instead of being underweight. Death is an extreme when it comes to obesity, but still likely, and it’s mostly seen in the elderly. It can cause certain cancers, heart problems and diabetes (World Health Organization, n.d.). The thing to know is that obesity is ranked second only to smoking as a preventable cause of death (Flegal, Williamson, Pamuk, &

Just four simple words can have so much meaning. The Week of Running is an online program where the world can sign up and set up a goal for a particular week. The goal is to see how much running someone will do that week. Once the goal is set the runner then pledges money online as an incentive to reach their goals. The amount of running a person does is tracked on a device similar to a Fitbit and if their goal isn’t reached then the money that was pledged goes to the Obesity Action Coalition which is a charity that helps in the fight against obesity. So compete against friends, do it alone, make it fun whatever you do remember you’re changing the

The food is so amazing temps one to have more and more because of how good and tasty it is no matter how unhealthy it is. Mr. Michael Pollon describes the dangers of consuming too much of something and how it affects us by comparing and contrasting the republic of alcohol and fat while also using logos and ethos.
A Global Problem through Rhetorical Eyes David Zinczenko, a nutrion and wellness editor of ABC news, portrayed a global problem to the public in a way that he could persuade them into agreeing with him that obesity is a problem that concerns all of humanity. He stated that obesity should not only concern the person suffering from it and the parents but all of humanity since it could happen to everyone. In fact, David Zinczenko himself suffered from obesity at an early age. Thankfully, he was able to turn his life around and use his situation in a way that he could help others not suffer what he did. Which is why he published the article, “Don’t Blame the Eater” in the opinion section of the New York Times and with that create knowledge of this
Each year, there are about 112,000 deaths from obesity that are preventable. In the past few decades, the number of cases of obesity has been on the rise in the United States. It has tripled among children and doubled among adults. In 1990, Connecticut’s obesity rate was at 10.4 percent. Then, in 2000, it was at 16.0 percent and currently it’s at 26.0 percent.
Saletan gives more than enough information on how, when, and what is happening worldwide about obesity. Although he does not give a solution, he still made an eye opening experience while reading this essay. Obesity is now happening worldwide. Yes I said it, worldwide according to Saletan. “Egyptian, Mexican, and South African women are as fat as American”, he claims in the second paragraph.
Today about one in three children in the United States are obese, and is the number one cause of death in America. Childhood obesity is now more concerning to people than drug abuse and smoking. Obesity not only has disgusting physical effects, it also will have negative changes to a person’s personality. Even though many people are aware of the problems obesity brings, there still has been at least a 50% increase in obese people since 1980. Obesity will cause extreme health problems and possibly death if people don’t change their diets, activity levels, or emotional needs towards food.
accepting soft drink and fast-food contracts because they provide large commissions for financially strapped schools. Obesity is a grave public health threat, more serious even than the opioid epidemic. It is linked to chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes, hyperlipidemia, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Obesity accounts for 18 percent of deaths among Americans ages 40 to 85, according to a 2013 study challenging the prevailing wisdom among scientists, which had placed the rate at around 5 percent. This means obesity is comparable to cigarette smoking as a public health hazard; smoking kills one of five Americans and is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States.
The top three leading causes of death – stroke, cancer, and heart disease – are all caused by obesity (Oliver 2010). Not only is obesity the cause of premature loss of life, but it also costs America over 150 billion dollars a year in healthcare costs. In order to fix these seemingly overwhelming problems it is imperative that there is a
According to the latest statistics from various sources, 1 out of 3 kids are obese in America and obesity is gradually becoming more and more common as it affects 37 percent of all adults and nearly 18 percent of all children in America (Yaniv and Rosin, 2009). The problem of obesity is also rising in parts of the developing world, as income levels rise and people have access to fattier products. In fact, the percentage of adult obesity has more than doubled while children’s obesity rates have more than tripled within the past thirty years around the globe (Yaniv and Rosin, 2009). However, despite the rise in global obesity rates, an alarming estimate of about 112,000 deaths are associated with obesity each in the U.S. alone. One of the chief causes is many people suffering from obesity do not make healthy food choices (Sturm, Powell, Chriqui and Chaloupka, 2010).
Not only eating unhealthy but over eating healthy food will make people obese as well. I’m not saying that fast food industry doesn’t have any role in making people fat, but they are not the only cause of obesity. I’m not agree with the author of “Childhood Obesity is Everyone's Problem” as well because he only shows junk food in the picture with a obese girl. The picture says that only junk food makes people obese, but it is not
Nothing is ever given to you in life and if you want to achieve your goals, you must challenge yourself past your limits. While running is an individual sport, the team is so important to becoming a better athlete and person. The team challenges you to be your best and has become the biggest competitor for me. This type of competition is positive because I want my teammates to succeed and they want to see me accomplish my goals.
Obesity has gained a lot of attention in the recent years especially in the 21st century. Right now in America, there is an ongoing epidemic. The cause is not by viruses or bacteria, but by human nature. There is no one way to solve this serious problem. Obesity Proposal Obesity is a major problem in the United States. With the rates on obesity constantly rising we have to come up with a way to solve the problem somehow. Fortunately, there are some way that we can help and that includes helping the youth understand obesity, encouraging restaurants to improve their menus and nutrition facts and opening space for citizens so they can become fit and active. One of the main issues as to why America is obese is because of all the opportunities they have available to them.
In the new era we live in, the levels of obese and overweight individuals are highly growing across the globe. Overweight is defined as the identification of individuals and groups at increased risk of morbidity and mortality. Obesity is considered to be a disease of fat accumulating irregularly to an extent that it can harmfully disrupt an individual's health, it is also related to psychological problems and negative consequences. The situation of cumulative incidents of excess body fat is mostly due to industrialization, a mixture of little exercise, more abundance and availability of food, commonly in the industrialized nations of the Western Hemisphere. This situation comes along with a lot of controversy on the topic; overweight and obese individuals began to feel offended and discriminated by society, thus in reaction to this they created the Fat Acceptance Movement.
Fast food and unhealthy living are all problems with today’s society. We need to hunker down on obesity or it will drastically decrease our quality of life, increase our insurance costs, and our nation’s overall health. “How Obesity is affecting the World around YOU.” American Adult Obesity, 8 May 2011, americanadultobesity.wordpress.com/mark-public-argument/. “How Does Obesity in Adults Affect Spending on Health Care?” Congressional Budget Office, 4 Aug. 2015, www.cbo.gov/publication/21772.
