Obesity is a disorder involving excessive body that increases the risk of health problems. Obesity is known to be a big problem not only in North Carolina, but in America, that continues to grow each and everyday. According to the WHO (World Health Organization), "A person is obese when their body mass is 30 percent of greater"(pp.2). When a person is overweight or obese, it means the person has taking in more calories than he/she needs. Studying, reading and researching about obesity in not only North Carolina but in America, many do not realize that obesity is a deadly disease. Th good news is obesity can be prevented y changing diets, increasing physical activities and environment changes. Obesity can sometimes come from medical problems that can reduce a persons daily activities. As a person stops exercising they could gain weight; However, if a media, condition is an issue in a persons daily living, they could speak to their primary care doctor. A primary care physician is a doctor who provides both the first contact for a person with an undiagnosed health issues based on medical conditions. Obesity is a preventable medical condition, as a matter of fact, adults who are trying to avoid obesity can participate in a physical activity that involves movement for about 15-30 minutes a day that is all it takes. Physical activities is not only good for adults but for children as well. This essay is to inform adults about their health, the cause of obesity and how it can be prevented. According to, The Burden of Obesity in North Carolina", "no physical activity and unhealthy eating combined are the second leading preventable cause of death",(p.6). In order to avoid stroke, cancer, diabetes and obesity,none has to be physically active and change their eating habits, if they are eating unhealthy. Nonetheless, many health professionals believe that being overweight (according to the BMI scale) could cause health complications, as Kendrick states that the community believes being overweight “causes a host of diseases, which will inevitably result in premature death”(Kendrick 118). Since childhood obesity is metaphorically refers as “epidemic”, there must be a cause for this “epidemic”. Moffat listed several causes for obesity in the article, and the main causes are victims themselves, victims’ parents, social construction, and “toxic” environment. Merriam Webster dictionary defines obesity as a condition that is characterized by excessive accumulation and storage of fat in the body and that in an adult is typically indicated by a body mass index of 30 or greater (Merriam-Webster, 2015). In the United States, health costs related to obesity continue to rise and public impact is significant. “Obesity has become a public health issue because the consequences of obesity in terms of higher risk of morbidity and mortality for an individual translate into increased medical care costs, not only for the individual but also for society, and these costs are both large and growing” (Okrent and Alston, 2012). In North Carolina adult obesity rates have increased from 12.3% in 1990 to 29.4% in 2013. North Carolina now ranks eighth in the United States for obesity related diabetes and eleventh for obesity related hypertension (Levi, Segal, Laurent and Rayburn, 2014).
The high demand for medical care also increases the financial burden on the families and therefore the community as well. As one can see the community health is greatly effected by the high rates of obesity among its individuals. Children in particular have a massive effect because not only are they the future of that community, but they also influence the schools in that region. Healthy People 2020 regard obesity in America as a very serious problem especially among children. It is such a major issue because childhood obesity easily leads to obesity in adulthood that increases the risks for heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, stroke, and cancer (Nutrition).
Obesity has been a major problem in America for a long time every since junk food and fast food came into play. Now in America there is 78.6 million obese adults and counting (CDC). Obesity can lead to heart disease, stroke and even type 2 diabetes if worse enough. The estimated obesity medical bill was over 147 billion dollars in United States this shows that when you get obesity that is why you should stay active and eat more healthy foods. Obesity has gained a lot of attention in the recent years especially in the 21st century. Right now in America, there is an ongoing epidemic. The cause is not by viruses or bacteria, but by human nature. There is no one way to solve this serious problem. With growing body sizes and serious medical problems associated with obesity, it is a problem that needs to be addressed and changed.
