The purpose of this paper is to describe how nursing’s philosophical foundations influence nursing practice and my personal philosophy. My Philosophy I have always viewed nursing as an art; throughout history, nurses have derived conceptual models and theories from other disciplines to create nursing theories and apply them to clinical practice. “As nursing theoretical thinking has evolved, there has been a need to embrace both the practical aspects of practice while dealing with those questions that have classically been the purview of philosophy” (Pesut & Johnson, 2007, p. 116).

As nurses, we continue to gain knowledge and skills within our area of practice. We use theories to help us build concepts or ideas in gathering information, explaining relationships and demonstrating experiences of development. Theories vary in their level of abstraction and scope. Nursing theories are beneficial in helping us to understand, organize our thoughts and influence practice and research. Nursing theory has three distinct types to describe the level of abstraction:

Each theory has a specific purpose and varies in how abstract, formal, and restrictive it is. There has been a movement from focus on grand theory to middle range theory over time. As the world continues to evolve and develop it is important for nursing theory to do the same. As grand theory is becoming smaller middle range theory is growing. (Smith & Parker, 2015).

Philosophy of Nursing Everyone’s values and beliefs about the profession of nursing are all different. The four concepts of nursing are interrelated and all mean something different to every person, too. Throughout this paper, I will be reflecting on my values and beliefs about nursing through the four concepts while comparing them to a nursing theorist with views that are most similar to my own.

Nursing is a profession that started as part of the larger medical field. Nursing has dropped its dependence on the medical field and it has grown independent with its models and separate interventions. Many nursing leaders have devised different theories to fit into the nursing field. There are some different nursing theories that encompass the nursing theory. The need theory, unitary human theory, self-care theory, interpersonal theory, transcultural nursing, and from novice to expert theories are all nursing theories.

Within this paper I will examine my personal assumptions, beliefs and values of the four nursing paradigms to develop a personal philosophy of nursing. The practice of nursing evolves daily from theories and philosophies that are proven by researchers, resulting in growth of the medical profession and advanced evidence based knowledge. Philosophies According to Alligood (2014b), philosophies are specific theories that focus on one or more metaparadigm concepts in a wide spectrum philosophical way (p. 43). For a person to understand philosophies it is required to understand the knowledge type, metaparadigms. Metaparadigm Metaparadigm is the vast perspective of a discipline and a way to describe a concern specifically to a profession or department (Alligood, 2014b, p.42).

Nursing, and everything that it entails, cannot be easily described in just one simple word or phrase. It goes beyond the meaning of a profession and the stereotypical definition of treating the ill. Nursing is the “protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations” (American Nurses Association, 2010, p. 1). Therefore, it is a career that requires dedication, passion, critical thinking, and knowledge. It demands commitment and an understanding of its core values and concepts, as well as the nurse’s own personal philosophy and principles.

It also clarifies nursing values and development and allows for accountability. It involves patients in co-ordinated nursing care (Feo and Kitson, 2016). The Roper, Logan and Tierney model helps nurses to focus on patient care by following the fundamental rights of maintaining independence of the ADL’s without diminishing dignity. Recognising that their knowledge, attitudes and behaviour may be influenced by biological, psychological, sociocultural, environmental and politico-economic factors and respecting their decisions in such. Overcoming and preventing illness to maintain independence is the nurses key focus in delivering patient care which follows the direction of the RLT model of nursing (Roper, Logan and Tierney, 2001).

My Personal Philosophy and Values of Nursing Nursing is proving care, support, and serve people who are in need. The purpose of nursing is to improve patient 's health condition to a better life. Nursing Theorists and their Theory 1.Florence Nightingale- Nightingale’s theory of the Environment is mainly focused on the environment, she believed that, the environment has a great importance that can be used to improve and encourage healing. With proper ventilation, clean air, lack of noise , proper lighting, and adequate elimination of waste. Are a few factors she believed and can be observed and maintained. 2.Sister Calista Roy- Roy’s Theory is based on, in which the individual views biopsychosocial being, in which a person adapt with the constant change of the environment.

The Purpose of The Theory The purpose of Henderson’s theory is to give the principles that help construct practice and to generate further nursing knowledge. Considering doing so, it helps nurses to understand their purpose and role in nursing in the healthcare setting. Henderson believes that the unique function of the nurse is to help the person sick or well, in the performance of those activities contributing to health or its recovery (to a peaceful death) that he would do unaided if he had the strength, will or knowledge.
