The first provision states that “the professional nurse practices with compassion and respect for individuals and families regardless of economic status, personal attribute or the nature of the health problem”. Basically, everyone is treated equally with the same quality of care regardless of race, ethnicity, and ability to pay or attitudes about health. This includes the patient that is “pain seeking”. Nurses often have difficulty treating patients with dignity when they think the patient is only there to get pain medicine. This is not how we as nurses should behave. The 3rd provision of the code states that “the nurse is responsible for promoting, advocating for and protecting the health, safety and rights of the patient”. This means that it is the nurse’s responsibility to ensure that the patient has a safe environment to be treated and the ability to discuss health issues without unwanted …show more content…
I work with patients that have suffered various types of neurological deficits such as stroke, brain tumor, aneurysm and traumatic brain injury. Many times these patients have lost function of a limb or have suffered some sort of communication impairment. Once the patient has overcome the dangers of the illness it is part of my responsibility to help them regain their independence by teaching them self-care activities. This often involves adjusting their surrounding environment in ways that help them help themselves. E. Contributions Florence Nightingale has impacted my nursing practice. She came into a hospital setting that had low standards and the environment had caused more problems for the patients than the war. She made efforts to clean up the facilities. She kept records of the changes and was able to show that a more aseptic environment was crucial to the healing process. This is something that I use in my daily tasks as a nurse. I wash my hands regularly, keep my patient’s rooms clean and organized and make sure that my patients have baths daily to prevent infections. F.
For many years now, I have been working with this organization named REM Hennepin. This organization predominantly serves individuals within Hennepin County who experience many forms of disability. However, people from other counties are also represented through host county concurrence agreements. Their mission statement is precise and it is about creating opportunity for people and to care for adults with disability.
I believe you have made excellent points in terms of Nightingale being a transformative leader within nursing profession. It is also interesting to consider that although she has been influential, her thoughts are opposed to what was embraced by the leadership within America. This may be because nursing itself is practically synonymous with Florence Nightingale. This indicates that the principles that she discussed were not followed. Nightingale did not believe that one nurses should not oversee all the nurses staff and teaching as well.
According to the California Board of Registered Nursing (2011), “An Explanation of the Scope of RN Practice including Standardized Procedure” documentation defines the scope of practice for RNs licensing in California also explains the process of determining if a standardized procedure is required. It is RNs’ responsibilities and accountabilities to enforce the Nurse Practice Act (NPA) pertaining to the specific state for nursing practice within the scope of educational level and entitled licensure allowed. In addition, “Code of Ethics for Nurses” (American Nurses Association [ANA], 2015) provides guide indicating how to care patients with ethical obligations. Florence Nightingale 2 Florence Nightingale was a legend in her period and was one of the greatest modernizers in nursing. In her 90 years, she accomplished great things in the nursing field. Her accounts of nursing health, environment, and humanity are outstanding and still accurate to this day. Nightingale transformed nursing and changed the way nursing was regarded. Florence Nightingale led a team of nurses, which improved the unsanitary conditions at a British military hospital, during the Crimean War. The patriotism of Florence Nightingale influenced both Northern and Southern women in a similar way. For both Northern and Southern women, Lawrence Nightingale represented a woman who was doing more than just sitting on the sidelines of war waiting for the husband to come home.
She became an expert on the scientific care of the ill (“Nightingale, Florence” 216) and throughout the United States Civil War, she was often asked about how to best run field hospitals (Biography.com Editors 4). Nightingale earned many honors (“Nightingale, Florence” 217) and was the first woman to receive the Order of Merit (Bostridge xx). Nightingale became a person of public appreciation (Biography.com Editors 3), and people referred to her as a “ ‘saintly woman.’ ” (“Nightingale, Florence” 215) Young women wished to be like her (Biography.com Editors 3), and even women from higher classes started enrolling at Nightingale’s Training School for Nurses (Biography.com Editors 3). Thanks to Nightingale, the higher class no longer disgraced nursing, and they came to view it as a noble occupation (Biography.com Editors 3).
A nurse must keep up to date on education and new processes in health-care, so they can provide the best care. As a nurse, you have promised to give each of your patients the best care that can possibly be given. To understand more about what nursing is, start with what changed nursing most of all, Florence Nightingale. Florence Nightingale is a nurse icon every nurse should learn from and incorporate into their everyday practice. A few of the practices she was able to establish that have impacted all of nursing include: being able to bring praise to nursing, establish proper care for patients, and be a war nurse for all to remember. At the time Nightingale began pursing her career as a nurse, society had a different understanding of what nursing was.
ABSTRACT Florence Nightingale was born into a wealthy family; Nightingale was determined to enter nursing despite its low status at this time. Florence Nightingale was truly inspirational and changed the face of nursing from a mostly untrained profession to a highly skilled and well respected medical profession with very important responsibilities. She showed that trained nurses and good hygiene help sick people get better. She opened the first professional nursing school in history. It was because of the influence of Florence Nightingale that nursing as a profession became what it is today.
. As a nurse leader, my role and responsibility towards establishing a financially sustainable organization would include to fully study and understand the cultural processes and systems, then identify areas which need change or improvement. Focused on organizational vision, and understanding the real purpose of the organization is essential and establishes why improving such process is meaningful (Sinek, 2010). In addition, understanding the purpose of the organization existence, and systems assessments will identify areas not reflecting organizations vision. To increase patient outcomes, such areas will need improvement.
The NMC Code states “Treat people as individuals and uphold their dignity”. Although dignity can often be difficult to ensure for every patient, especially when many procedures are invasive and require intimate details of a patient’s lifestyle, it is important as a nurse to always preserve and respect a patient’s dignity. (Nursing and Midwifery Council, 2015) This document explores what dignity is to a patient, how it can be maintained in a hospital and, why dignity is important to patients. Treating an individual with dignity is to treat them with respect, ensuring they feel worthy and are valued as an individual.
The first code outlines safe and competent nursing practice , my understanding regarding this code is that Nurses are expected to ensure that the standards and the level of their actions match with the standards that are developed by the professionals. The primary responsibility of a nurse is to provide competent and safe nursing. In any case, if a nurse finds any situation where there is ethical conflict or is illegal, then he/she must inform the immediate superior and should not support the
