Researchers theorize that shift work exerts adverse effects in nurse by disturbing circadian rhythms, sleep, and family and social life. Disturbances in circadian rhythms may lead to reductions in the length and quality of sleep and may increase fatigue and sleepiness, as well as gastrointestinal, psychological, and cardiovascular symptoms. In addition, working at unusual times may make it difficult to interact with family and maintain other social contacts. The Nurse of the Future (NOF) Core Competencies Models were choosing to achieve one optimal goal of providing quality of care to patients and their families. The NOF Nursing Core Competency provides a normal structured of approach to nursing and patient care, and they are all equally important in their unique ways. However, out of the 10 Nurse of the Future Core Competencies, I have chosen Healthcare professionalism and quality improvement which in my opinion are two main core outstanding competencies. Professionalism in any profession dictates the conduct, purpose, or qualities that define a profession.
The Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies include ten areas of expertise: Patient - centered care, professionalism, informatics and technology, evidence - based practice, leadership, systems - based practice, safety, communication, teamwork and collaboration , and quality improvment. After a lot of research, these competencies were selected based on how we can transition from our current practice and education standards to our future practices. The ten competencies that were selected are based on the foundation of nursing education and how it will translate into the practical world. These skills need to be learned by graduate level nurses either solely or in combination at some point in the beginning of the professional building stage. Each of these attributes is a skill learned by graduate nurses that helps to further build that individual nurse’s professional arsenal. Each of these skills begin a foundation on which that individual will start to grow and develop professionally. Each skill is important in its own right and allows for continued growth with experience. After much thought on this topic regarding my personal and professional growth I believe that I have strengths in commitment, developing one’s own style and willingness to cooperate.

What does nursing mean to me? Nursing means helping people heal, meeting their needs while they are in your care, listening to concerns, protecting them from harm, and educating them how to care for themselves while treating them with dignity, compassion and respect and giving of yourself to the care of people and community. It is having compassion for people and their health and being a humanitarian, making sure they receive the best care possible. Nurses must also treat families of patients with kindness, realizing they are going through a stressful situation also. Nursing is a responsibility to provide the best care regardless of the patient’s age, race, religion, sex, disability, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or their past.

Many studies have shown that the implementation of Orlando’s theory can lead to improvement of nurse-client relationships while decreasing distress. The Nursing Process Discipline Theory developed by Ida Jean Orlando seeks to understand the role of the nurse in addressing the patient’s needs for help. It is crucial for the nurse to utilize their perception, thoughts, and feelings to explore the meaning of the patient’s behavior. This process allows the nurse to identify the source of distress and to attempt to provide the help needed.
As a nurse, I strive to make the core competencies a part of my daily practice. Nurses utilize evidence-based nursing knowledge and professional nursing judgement to assess health needs, provide nursing care, educate clients and support individuals to manage their health holistically. They practice in collaboration with other healthcare professionals. They are accountable for their scope of practice including the supervision and delegation of nursing activities to the enrolled nurses and nursing assistants. Nurses practice in a variety of clinical contexts depending on their education preparation and practice experience.
Nurses need to see their roles as holistic and expand their view of nursing. We must learn other new skills that are considered integral to contemporary nurse practice. Nurses must be multi-disciplinary. The skills they need to acquire include emergency care, illness assessment, psycho-social nursing, counselling, behavioural science, health promotion, statistical analysis, advocacy, presentation skills, political activity and knowledge, marketing, publicity, family intervention and community needs assessment. Today, nurses should see themselves as prime movers for change.
It guides our thought processes and focuses on the specific areas to bring the patient back to a certain point where he or she can have a quality life. These skills include nurse-patient relationship skill, interactional skills, basic physical examination skills, clinical encounter across the life span, therapeutic communication skills, positive attitudinal skills etc. Assessing the development of nursing skills in students should be done often and acquiring of these nursing skills should also be a continuous learning process. This indicates that extensive experiences and supervision from mentors, preceptors, supervisors, teachers, considerable time on task and involvement of students are necessary to achieve a considerable nursing skill performance. The students’ interest in practice and the environment also influences the development and acquisition of nursing skills. In this case, students’ goals should include increased self-knowledge and scientific awareness in addition to their gradual improvement in professional nursing practice.

Nurse include many important roles such as caregiver, health promoter, client advocate, care coordinator, counselor, case manager, educator. (The Nursing Council of Hong Kong,2015) During the practicum, I experience the role of the nurse importance because I did a mistake. The numerical scale 4, 3, 2, and 1, reflected excellent, good, fair, and poor respectively. In development of this rubric, assessment was scored out of 12, diagnosis and planning were scored out of 16, implementation scored out of 28, and evaluation scored out of 8.
