The educator involved in identifying the needs and activities changes for improvement through further educational practices which propels the nurses to engage in lifelong learning (www.nln.org, nd). Effectiveness of educator role demands the recognition and support from the nurses, nursing faculties and other nursing leaders for participating in research and thereby, the elements of evidence-based practice established. This continuous process of learning occurs in the educator by integrating self-actualization, and fostering knowledge of previous experience into the innovation with help of mentors and supports of faculty colleagues (www.nln.org, nd). New grads needs the acquisition of hospital policies and procedural protocols to render patient safe and comfort care. I have experienced the benefit of gaining insightful knowledge of EBP at clinicals through teaching and learning. The classroom teaching is prepared me for understanding the nurses learning styles, critical thinking, self-awareness, self-reflection, and cultural diversity as well as to assess and evaluate with help of teaching strategies in small group. The format of learning environment, development of curriculum design and classes, the role of
As lifelong learning continues, it is important to focus on patients and family outcomes through teamwork collaboration, advocating, effective communication, and equally, self-driven to accomplish goals to create and coordinate activities to promote professional development, is why I have chosen to apply for the ambulatory nurse educator
A family nurse practitioner could apply theory, information from research, and knowledge learned in class to formulate patient education strategies as well as to create patient education material. The nursing profession advocates for evidence-based practice. This requires the nurse to know, in order to provide proper care. Therefore, it is important to link research to nursing practice because the data collected through research makes it easier to make clinical decisions (Pipe, Wellik, Buchda, Hansen, & Martyn, 2005). An understanding of nursing theory would also prove important in handling nursing dilemmas by offering a systematic guide for handling nursing issues.
Objective One During my clinical day three, I demonstrated entry-level competence in professional nursing practice in caring for patients with multiple and/or complex unmet human needs. I addressed safety needs, safety in medication administration, effective communication, and surveillance for my patients. First, I addressed safety needs my ensuring the appropriate safety measures were implemented for the patients. Some of the safety measures included, wearing non-skid socks, wearing a yellow armband which indicated fall risk, keeping the bed in lowest position, two side rails up, bed locked, and the call light within reach.
The Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies include ten areas of expertise: Patient - centered care, professionalism, informatics and technology, evidence - based practice, leadership, systems - based practice, safety, communication, teamwork and collaboration , and quality improvment. After a lot of research, these competencies were selected based on how we can transition from our current practice and education standards to our future practices. The ten competencies that were selected are based on the foundation of nursing education and how it will translate into the practical world. It is very important to understand each aspect of this model because it is the core of how we develop our nursing knowledge while transitioning from student
The purpose of the NLN is to support the education of nurses, provide testing services and grants for research, all with the purpose of achieving excellence in nursing (National League for Nursing [NLN], 2013). This organization impacts nursing by supporting nurse education in the development of nursing faculty. The NLN role in Nursing Excellence is to influence public policy on nursing by providing backing for education with the expectation of excellence through growth, improvement, and understanding (NLN, 2013). I support mission of the NLN to promote and provide educational excellence standards.
delivery of the pilot program. The final questionnaire will be a post-intervention survey of the efficiency of the project. Evidence-Based Intervention Evaluation of teaching practice and reflection, therefore, go hand in hand to help nurse educators develop their practice and become better educators (O’Malley and Fleming, 2012). However, to get the most out of evaluation, nurse educators must be; (1) understand common approaches used in education practice and (2) recognize the strengths and limitations that are connected to each learned approach. Nurse educators will be able to engage in self-evaluation (Hughes and Quinn, 2013).
My experience working on PCU/telemetry unit and surgical/trauma unit did not only allow me to obtain knowledge on various different medical conditions and surgeries, it also assisted me with my organization skills and time management. As a leader working as a charge nurse and a preceptor, I am autonomous and able to multitask. Also from working with various different healthcare professionals, I am aware of different roles each healthcare team members play in the process of patient care. As a Family Nurse Practitioner student, I plan to advance my ability and my awareness to program my mind to think like an Advance Practice Nurse while not losing the valuable skills and knowledge that I have gained as a Registered Nurse. I will implement the knowledge and incorporate it with the education I will receive from Drexel University’s Family Nurse Practitioner program to better understand and learn to treat the patient’s health conditions as a Primary Care
The DNP student stated that she has not implemented her project yet and it could not be discussed at the moment. The DNP student did discuss on how everyone, whether a nurse or not, can advocate for the community. The DNP discussed on the pros on advancing one’s education. DNP essential eight: Advanced Nursing Practice is not just entitiled to practice in hospitals. These individuals practice in hospitals, clinics, home health, and in the
Nursing is a most trusted and gratifying profession. Mrs. Aponte Santiago does not has a certification, but the nurses have the opportunity to obtained one of them in the following areas of interest: emergency room (ER), oncology, renal, phlebotomy, epidemiology, progressive care, and others. Some of the specialist certifications includes: gerontology, pediatric and neonatal. In addition, the subspecialty certifications in acute/critical care are also available (i.e. cardiac medicine and cardiac surgery). There is not an special certification given within the profession, but there are a lot of options available. The certification provide additional knowledge, it is a measure of competency and prepare the nurse to execute an extraordinary job in a specific area of nursing.
As a novice practitioner and member of the health care team I believe I have come a long way from when I first began the nursing program. I have expanded on my communication skills with patients and overall knowledge of nursing. Within the hospital setting I am now more confident than I have ever been before. I use to walk into a patient’s room and not know what to say. I now do not have to think about what to say when entering a room, it just comes naturally.
CONCEPT 2: COMPETENCE Competence is a “complex multidimensional phenomenon, defined as the ability of the registered nurse to practice safely and effectively, fulfilling his/her professional responsibility within his/her scope of practice” (ABA 2000).Although it is seen as an ambiguous and confusing term with no agreed definition (McMullan et al 2003, Storey 2001), Benner(1984),also defined competence as “a feeling of mastery, the ability to cope with and manage the contingencies of clinical nursing, conscious deliberate planning to achieve efficiency and organization”. Attributes of competence therefore include technical skills, communication and interpersonal skills as well as organizational and managerial skills (ABA 2000). Competence is therefore important because nurses and midwives are faced with a variety of challenges as they work in a complex healthcare environment that is constantly undergoing advances/changes to meet the increasing and diversifying health needs of individuals and the population (Davidson et al 2013,Girot 2000, Naylor & Naylor 2012, NCPD 2010). The relevance of competence includes:- Competence enhances patients’ outcomes. Nurses, like other professions, gain the public’s trust through their competence, credibility and accountability (Davidson et al 2013).
Healthcare professionals play a role in quality management process by taking accurate patient information using the electronic health record system. Technology with professional knowledge of nursing improves quality of patient care and general quality management process in the healthcare. The baccalaureate nurse involves an integration of nursing knowledge, skills, and attitudes that are fundamental to improving quality and safety of patients in the healthcare
A competent nurse is knowledgeable, compassionate, holistic, ethical, a patient advocate, and integrates other disciplines in order to achieve excellence in quality patient care. I believe the road is paved with multiple opportunities for students to experience and collaborate with competent nurses. Because I believe the qualities that are characteristic of a competent nurse also are characteristic of an competent nurse educator, my teaching styles reflects my nursing practice. I believe a student 's level of commitment is influenced by my enthusiasm and passion for teaching. For me, it begins by investing my time, knowledge and experience in students.
Providing care to a patient is a particularly challenging process that requires a great deal of effort from a nurse. A nurse’s ability to give quality care to their patient is an important aspect to a patient’s life both now and in the future. As such, nurses must exhibit specific qualities in their practice in order to maintain the best standard of care for their patients. Given this, I believe that the standards of knowledge, advocacy, and self-awareness are foundational to the nursing practice and to a nurse’s capacity to provide quality patient care. Knowledge
