My Leadership Philosophy Paper: Me As A Leader

Leadership is defined by Merriam-Webster (n.d.) as a “capacity to lead”. This concise yet inexact definition demonstrates an inherent debate of what exactly leadership is, moreover the concept of what makes someone a good or bad leader. People’s interpretations of what makes someone a leader varies from person to person based on their own philosophical outlook. My philosophy on leadership leans heavily on Jocko Willink’s and Leif Babin’s book Extreme Ownership. Quoting Willink & Babin (2015), “… leadership requires finding the equilibrium in the dichotomy of many seemingly contradictory qualities between one extreme and another” (p. 274).

Leadership is defined as encouraging groups or teams to get their work done, make mates feel included, and organizing activities. I have a habit to put down everything in a digital calendar, and I will look at the calendar to remind myself what I need to do. Using this habit can improve my leadership skill to organize activities in group of people. 3. Honesty, Authenticity, and Genuineness Honesty, authenticity, and genuineness, my third strength, can be simply defined as speaking the truth.

“If you want to become a great leader, you need to prepare yourself to become a great leader, and the best way to do that is to study great leaders.” (Schembechler 7). Being a leader means defining and exhibiting moral and ethical courage and setting an example for everyone within any given group. Being a leader helps you teach leadership skills to your family, friends, and employees who will then help do the "heavy lifting" of moving the masses from where it is today to where it needs to be in the future. In today's day in age, people will believe that great leaders are born to lead.

Having an effective leader at the helm of a group of people is an important part of being successful. The best leaders are inspirational, patient, confident, open-minded, decisive, personable, positive, and a smattering of other great qualities. Legendary football coach Vince Lombardi’s profound quote regarding leaders still sticks out to me “Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.” A true leader is gritty and persistent enough to find what really motivates people to become the most successful they can be.

1. My philosophy of leadership is about collaboration and teamwork. Respecting and treating everyone the same, is key to supporting a good team atmosphere. I believe when a leader puts effort and care into assisting others, then their peers and followers will naturally want to support them. It is also important for a leader to recognize, that advocacy must never become so important that the critical elements of leadership are neglected (e.g. policy enforcement, command support, etc...).

Every individual has all kind of behaviors. It is up to them to recognize them and utilize properly to flourish them and achieve their goals. A leader must have the knowledge to mobilize all the team members to achieve common organizational goals. Leadership is about a person who aims to lead and one who chooses to follow that leader. (Dr. Abdullah M. Abu-Tineh, 2009).

My Philosophy Everyone has their own personal leadership philosophy to describe their beliefs and values. Peter Northouse describes the philosophy of leadership as an unique set of beliefs and attitudes about the nature of people and work (Northouse 83). Each person has something that motivates them to achieve his or her goal. As a result, they create a set guideline and/or timeline of how they plan to reach the set goal.

Everyone in the world today is their own unique person. They have certain characteristics, a certain personality that makes them who they are. While many qualities are very beneficial in life, there are several that are key in determining the type of leader a person is. Some may be authoritative and close-minded while others may be more understanding and compassionate. In order to be a proper and just leader, one must be open to new ideas and be willing to learn from others and use the idea of community to achieve success.

A leader is someone who takes initiative and leads the group. A true leader doesn’t try to lead, they just do. A leader is effective in whatever they might be doing. Leaders have a significant role in the community; without our great pool of leaders, from all corners of our lives, our country would most likely be headed into a downhill spiral.

From my point of view , Leadership has more to it than I can possibly imagine. I define leadership as the art of enabling a group of people get to a specific destination. As a leader your main focus was to enable your followers lead theselves. As i think deeper i realise a person cannot choose to be a leader. I think a lot of the time people take on leadership positions without knowing.

There are many versions in respect to leadership, and it is often thought that leadership is influencing the followers towards a common shared purpose (Daft,2015, p5). Through class, I have a deep understanding of concepts, models and theory about leadership. The statement of this paper is to explore personal leadership vison and identify two key learnings from class which arise from research perspective on leadership and the personal side of leadership. Personal experience related to leadership is also discussed in this paper before giving a conclusion. To be a successful leader I also agree that one needs to have certain characteristic and skills. A leader needs to be able to simple lead, as you have stated. They need to direct and guide people to fulfill shared goals. Communication is also another huge skill. A leader needs to be able to clearly communicate, build relationships, motivate others, inspire others, and be a role model to create a positive work environment and culture that will accept change and innovation in the company.

Growing up my parents always taught me that being a leader is something we do every day; even when we do not think we are influencing or teaching another person something, we really are. Being a leader means that you project yourself as being worthy of that role. A leader does not choose the role of being a leader, it is something that the people around you chose. You must gain the respect and trust of others in order to lead them. If a group does not respect you or look up to you than they will not allow you to lead them.

No one can know everything, and a good leader should be able to ask others for help when they need it. They are always looking for improvement within themselves and those
