Muckrakers Research Paper

James Riddle was born on 14th February 1913 in Brazil. He was the second born in a family of four children and was an athlete. He started working full time while still a teenager in a department store as a stock boy after quitting school at the ninth grade. In 1930, he started working in a warehouse as a freight handler. This provided a platform for his career.

This investigation will scrutinize the question: To what extent did antitrust laws affect John D. Rockefeller’s company- Standard Oil? To analyze the effectiveness of the antitrust laws, the investigation will focus on the government policies and execution of said policies during the Gilded Age and the Progressive Era (1870-1920). The first source is a cartoon drawn by Horace Taylor for the September 25, 1899 issue of The Verdict named “What a Funny Little Government”. By 1890, Standard Oil dominated 90 percent of the oil industry, thus the publication date strengthens the value of the cartoon itself, since the close proximity enables for the cartoon to capture the perception of the cartoonist as well as the general public.

Charles Manson is a name most people have heard of. He covered the headlines of almost every newspaper in the United States. Manson led a group of people, that he referred to as "The Family", into a killing spree during the 1960's. He is responsible for the notorious Tate-LaBianca killings. As a cult leader, criminal, and murderer, Manson stands out as a one-of-a-kind killer.

The motley crew, made up of sailors and slaves led fights, revolts, and rebellions that stirred a change in America and led to the American Revolution. The sailors and slaves repeatedly received the short end of the stick in the British Colonial Empire. In response, they were unafraid to start conflicts and instigate hostilities between themselves and the upper class of merchants and plantation owners. They led rebellions against the injustices they saw, from press-gangs to worker’s wage riots and the re-enslavement of free-men. The motley crew led to politicians believing that all men are equal with unalienable rights, not just British land-owning men.

What is a muckraker? Muckrakers were investigative journalists who wrote exposés about corruption in politics and business. In 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt made a speech called “The Man with the Muck Rake”, about investigative journalists. “To assail the great and admitted evils of our political and industrial life with such crude and sweeping generalizations as to include decent men in the general condemnation means the searing of the public conscience”. He began calling these types of writers muckrakers.

On May 11, 1894 a widespread strike lead by railroad workers brought business to a complete cessation; only willing to discontinue until the federal government took unprecedented action to end the strike. The Pullman Strike began “as a peaceful labor protest against a single Chicago employer (54)”, and later ended up “into a national labor boycott of more than twenty railroads and then into a violent confrontation between the federal government, the railroad companies, and American workers (55.)” With the “mix of employer resistance, government aggression, worker bitterness, and general economic desperation (54)”, the Pullman Strike presented questions towards the “rights of employers and workers in an industrialized democracy and about the role

Frankenweenie is a 2012 3D stop-motion-animated film directed by Tim Burton. Muckrakers played an important role in reforming and creating massive change during the nineteenth century. Extreme tabloid journalism was the norm during the nineteenth century. Facts seemed lost and reporters wrote sensational articles in order to sell newspapers. One reporter however broke the norms, Ida.

WMuckrakers exposed american problems, famous muckrakers created public awareness of corruption, injustices and abuse of power. Muckrakers investigated thoroughly to find the reality behind child labor, meat packing, safety issues with workers, living condition and more. American society was causing controversy, due to this many laws were being changed and made to deal with these problems. Many muckrakers were coming out to fight.
