In the intercalary chapter number 25, Steinbeck shows the decay of morals and also physical decay in the chapter. He contrasts land that is used naturally for its nutrients, and land used, or in Steinbeck’s eyes, wasted for profits. The chapter has some apocalyptic overtones throughout. Steinbeck uses vivid imagery and harsh statements to convey his message. The chapter seems to show how there are consequences for interrupting the lands life force to line ones pockets.

Lewis is trying to make the audience feel like they have a mission, one that will take them as a community to accomplish. Lewis purposely first leads them with sadness, telling the audience stories of friends and family who face the hardships of the government, but, starts telling them that they are not alone, telling them that they need to work, and finally, telling them that they will succeed. By doing this, he starts with the truth, but ends by motivating the audience of how it isn’t the end.

Wharton utilizes Catherine’s physique to express her individuality and tremendous authority along with her bedroom to express her individuality in a pursuit to provide the readers with a physical manifestation of two pieces of her soul. Catherine Mingott’s physique represents her individuality and tremendous authority over her family. The narrator describes Mingott’s obesity as being very prominent declaring that “the immense accretion of flesh had descended on her in middle life like a flood of lava on a doomed city”(Wharton 24). Despite obtrusive shape which is described as a “natural phenomenon”(24), she composes herself with dignity and has a high level of self-esteem, revealing her tremendous level of strength. Regarding her physique, Catherine “had accepted this submergence as philosophically as all her other trials , and now, in extreme old age, was rewarded by presenting to her mirror an almost unwrinkled expanse of firm pink and white flesh”(24).

The emotional response is fear over the rising payments, and regret over being in an accident.

Green delivered a speech in favor of African American men joining the Union army. During this time period, African American men were still not able to enlist in the army. However, Green believed that it was still essential towards the Union army’s victory, and towards their freedom and rights as African American individuals. Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.

When arguing for racial equality, James Farmer Jr. quotes St.Augustine, “An unjust law is no law at all.” He claims that just laws are meant to protect all citizens; whereas, unjust laws that discriminate Negroes are not laws to be followed, thus raising awareness of racial discrimination by using emotional and logical appeals. In The Great Debaters, Henry Lowe appeals to the audience’s emotions during a debate about Negro integration into state universities. To challenge his opponent’s claim that the South isn 't ready to integrate Negroes into universities, he affirms that if change wasn’t forcefully brought upon the South, Negroes would “still be in chains,” which is an allusion to slavery. Award winning writer, George Orwell, in his dystopian novel, 1984, Winston and O’Brien debate the nature of reality. Winston and O’Brien’s purpose is to persuade each other to believe their own beliefs of truth and reality. They adopt an aggressive tone in order to convey their beliefs about what is real is true. In George Orwell’s 1984, Winston and O’Brien use a variety of different rhetorical strategies and appeals such as parallel structure, pathos, and logos in order to persuade each other about the validity of memories and doublethink; however, each character’s argument contains flaw in logic. Winston debates with O’Brien that truth and reality are individual and connected to our memories.

Mark Twain, an 18th century humorist, was known for his critical and satirical writing. In one of his most famous essays, “ Fenimore Coopers Literary Offenses” Twain addresses Coopers inability to realistically develop a “situation” and his failure to effectively back up his stories in order for them to be more plausible. To dramatically convey his unimpressed and sarcastic attitude, he applies biting diction, metaphors and hypophora throughout this work . By continuously using biting diction, Twain develops a mocking tone towards Fenimore Cooper’s incapability to create even the simplest of storylines. In the title of the work a sarcastic tone is evident; the word choice is utilized to reinforce the argument stating how Coopers work is an offense to the world of literature.
