Richard Connell Biography and Short Story Connections “The Most Dangerous Game” begins with a long ride on a yacht traveling through a “moonless Caribbean night” (1) making their way to Rio. As the two men Whitney and Rainsford finished their discussion about hunting, Rainsford decided to go smoke out on the deck. Until he fell overboard following the sounds of gun shots and ended up swimming his way to “Ship-Trap Island” (1) While he wonders around he encounters a hidden castle. Rainsford is invited to stay for dinner by Zaroff and comes to realize that the General not only hunts animals, but men as well. The General then invites him …show more content…
There have been times where the General and Rainsford came across each other, but they avoided each other to keep the game more interesting. Zaroff then releases his hound dogs to search and chase down Rainsford by his scent through the trail and happens to be found and attacked. As Rainsford is being attacked he comes up with a great idea to throw himself off the cliff into the water in order to trick Zaroff that he has been killed. Later he catches Zaroff by surprise by returning to the castle and finishing him off as he got to sleep in the Generals “very excellent bed.” …show more content…
According to “Richard Edward Connell”, it claims that he is “most known for his famous short story.”(1) This comparison can be made in the short story when Rainsford is also very well known for his story “Snow leopards in Tibet” (6) With this in mind, Connells ability to write interesting stories went back to his early life when “ Rainsford began reporting on baseball games when he was only 10 years old.” (20) Just like when Rainsford began hunting at an early age and soon became an export at hunting. It all started when “Connell was born and raised in Poughkeepsie, New York.” (1) As Rainsford ended up on the Island he saw the largest man he has ever seen “a gigantic creature.” (5) He explained to the man “I’m no robber. I fell off a yacht. My name is Sanger Rainsford of New York City.” (5) It also appears that Connell offered many opportunities when “The publisher sued the Crimson but also offered Connell a job at a New York City newspaper.” (20) for his great writing skills. Just like Rainsford got offered to go hunting with the general because of how great of a hunter he was. Both Richard and Connell had talented
Sanger Rainsford stays intrepid, fighting and feinting until he finds his way to the precipice of the island. Unflinching, he leaps into the Caribbean Sea, later meeting the General for a duel to the death. Rainsford is victorious, but he didn’t win.
His first thought is to get as far away as he can, ‘His first idea was to put as distance between himself and General Zaroff.’ But as he calms down and starts thinking rationally, he realizes he needs to try to survive and outsmart Zaroff and play along with his game. As the days go by he starts losing his morals and tries to kill Zaroff, first by dropping a log on him, ‘The dead tree, delicately adjusted to rest on the cut living one crashed down and struck the general.’ Rainsford has started losing his morals and getting more in touch with his beast.
He is greeted by a man named General Zaroff. A hunter like him but something is off about him. He hunts Humans. The only animal that can reason. Rainsford is in a terrible situation.
Imagine being an illegal immigrant, trapped in a cave, or being hunted by another man. Do you think you would be able to survive or would you thrive like these three lucky smart people? Lee wanted for crossing the border of North Korea, Ralston with his arm trapped between a rock and a wall stuck in a cave, and Rainsford being hunted by another man as in the “game”. Lee’s courage, Ralston’s intelligence, and Rainsford’s craftiness shows what it takes to be a survivor. To start, in Ted talk “My escape from North Korea”
(He is the one who killed all of those animals). On his island, where he hunts humans, the General has never lost to his own game of ‘survival’. Which means he eventually killed all of the contestants, (captured men who come to the island) or they die on their own. As well as the General , Rainsford too is a great survivor with the same characteristic as General Zaroff.
Both Rainsford and Zaroff share common passions, skills and ideology. Initially, there is admiration between both characters, but their similarities become the cause of the conflict. Rainsford murders Zaroff and has put an end to the murderous human
A far off island in the Caribbean , for one its pleasure. For the other it 's certain death. Welcome to ship trap island. The title of the story is The most Dangerous game by Richard Connell. Rainsford demonstrates that he is Alert, Intelligent, and Talented by fighting for his life against the General.
In the short story The Most Dangerous Game, the author Richard Connell shows that Rainsford needs control of his emotions, patience , and expert hunting and decision making skills in order to defeat Zaroff. Rainsford needs to gain control of his emotions to outthink Zaroff, who symbolizes Rainsfords "steep hill". When he finds that he is going to be hunted his natural instinct is to run and panic, but then he stops to look around and get a grip on the task at hand. Then at a critical moment when Zaroff finds him in a tree, Rainsford panics again because he realizes Zaroff is on his trail and is toying with him. Once again, he gains control of his emotions and formulates a plan.
Also, General Zaroff is an extreme hunter and doesn’t find pleasure in hunting regular animals. Zaroff says the most dangerous game is humans because they have the ability to reason. Rainsford is going to be hunted and is given a certain amount of time to survive. Moreover, while Rainsford is being hunted Zaroff
Throughout this journal, Zaroff can be characterized as confident and wacky. First, he can be considered as a confident man. In addition, the introduction of himself to Rainsford can be a detail by his speaking tone. Also, how he collaborates with Rainsford such as shake hands is a detail too. For example, “Another man was coming down the broad marble steps, an erect, slender man in evening clothes.
Tanner Toussaint In the short story The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff. One of the reasons why Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff is on the island the only way to live is to hunt or to be the one being hunted. Secondly, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff because Zaroff wanted to die. Lastly, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff because killing Zaroff is going to be the only way Rainsford will escape the island from a psychopath.
Panic, anxiety, and most importantly, fear, are all components that form the adventurous tale, The Most Dangerous Game. Rainsford, the protagonist of the story, is widely recognized as an experienced hunter who ventures off in a ship to travel to Rio in order to hunt jaguars. However, the story turns when Rainsford falls off his ship, encounters a hunter who hunts men, and becomes the prey himself. Although Connell sets up an intense plot by using irony, characterization, word choice, and other literary devices, imagery is one of the main aspects that releases an uneasy feeling within the audience. Imagery is a common literary device that authors use to engage a reader into the story, by painting the scene in the audience’s mind.
We can infer that while on the yacht, feeding a human being to animals would never have occurred to him, and if it had, that he would have treated it like “grisly...cold-blooded murder.” Revenge also did not seem to be an important aspect to him before becoming the subject of Zaroff's dangerous game, but when he returns and encounters Zaroff in his bedroom, he soon resumes the hunt, this time with Zaroff as the prey. Rainsford compromises his own morals by continuing the game, and he even seems to enjoy killing his new human prey, resting comfortably in Zaroff's “very excellent” bed after killing the general and feeding him to the hounds. Thus, the reader realizes that perhaps Rainsford may have decided that hunting humans is not so “barbaric” after
The narrator says, “Rainsford held his breath. The general’s eye had left the ground and were traveling inch by inch up the tree. Rainsford froze there, every muscle tensed for a spring”(13). Rainsford is scared to death when the general is hunting him because this is a real life or death situation. General Zaroff is pulling tricks on Rainsford to try to get him to come down from the tree.
Fear is not real. It is the product of thoughts you create. Danger is very real, but fear is a choice. In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” the main character Rainsford is being hunted which creates fear in him. He is scared of dying but overcame his fear by facing the danger of the hunting game.
