Richard Connell Biography and Short Story Connections “The Most Dangerous Game” begins with a long ride on a yacht traveling through a “moonless Caribbean night” (1) making their way to Rio. As the two men Whitney and Rainsford finished their discussion about hunting, Rainsford decided to go smoke out on the deck. Until he fell overboard following the sounds of gun shots and ended up swimming his way to “Ship-Trap Island” (1) While he wonders around he encounters a hidden castle. He is then introduced to General Zaroff and notices that they both have a passion for hunting. Rainsford is invited to stay for dinner by Zaroff and comes to realize that the General not only hunts animals, but men as well. The General then invites him …show more content…

There have been times where the General and Rainsford came across each other, but they avoided each other to keep the game more interesting. Zaroff then releases his hound dogs to search and chase down Rainsford by his scent through the trail and happens to be found and attacked. As Rainsford is being attacked he comes up with a great idea to throw himself off the cliff into the water in order to trick Zaroff that he has been killed. According to “Richard Edward Connell”, it claims that he is “most known for his famous short story.”(1) This comparison can be made in the short story when Rainsford is also very well known for his story “Snow leopards in Tibet” (6) With this in mind, Connells ability to write interesting stories went back to his early life when “ Rainsford began reporting on baseball games when he was only 10 years old.” (20) Just like when Rainsford began hunting at an early age and soon became an export at hunting. It all started when “Connell was born and raised in Poughkeepsie, New York.” (1) As Rainsford ended up on the Island he saw the largest man he has ever seen “a gigantic creature.” (5) He explained to the man “I’m no robber. I fell off a yacht. My name is Sanger Rainsford of New York City.” (5) It also appears that Connell offered many opportunities when “The publisher sued the Crimson but also offered Connell a job at a New York City newspaper.” (20) for his great writing skills.
