Through our understanding of the current scenario, the preferred scenario, documented above, lies out of reach, necessitating the alteration of the preferred scenario to reflect the current scenario. To this effect, the preferred scenario is for the student midwife to be fully aware of the policies and procedures of their local trust. It is also important for them to have available all of the necessary information required by the client and for the student midwife to be able to communicate this effectively. Communication is important within the midwifery profession. It is required through every aspect of a woman’s care including, but not limited to; gaining informed constant (NMC, 2015); and building a rapport with clients and their families. …show more content…
Firstly, sitting at a comfortable distance away from the client, with an open posture. Open posture allows the client to feel welcome and at ease with the health care provider as there is no barrier between them. By following this, Kate would be able to discuss her smoking status, with the student midwife, and the interaction which followed would provide a channel for the midwife to incorporate the SIDS advice, as well as the smoke free initiative (Star, n.d.a). It should be noted that the trust’s name, alike the client’s, will be changed to comply with confidentiality (NMC, 2015). The local trust, Star, (Star, n.d.a) suggests that smoking throughout pregnancy puts both mother and fetus at an increased risk of pregnancy related conditions. For example; pre-eclampsia, developed from a rise in the blood pressure; as well as respiratory issues as a direct result of the gravid uterus reducing the capacity of the mother’s lungs, which those of a smoker may not be able to compensate for as effectively as those of a non-smoker. Star provide all patients, or clients, who express a desire to cease smoking or those wanting a greater understanding of smoking, with a referral to a specialised health care professional, whose aim is to help their clients cease their smoking habits. Partners of the smoking women are also invited if they are also smokers as star trust (n.d.a) suggests that pregnant women are more likely to stop smoking if their partners do too. The trust provides a free programme to encourage individuals to stop smoking (Star, n.d.b). This information is available to the public via a webpage however individuals can also self-refer if they require further assistance with stopping smoking. The programme is individualised and
3. What are the nursing interventions that can be implemented to facilitate communication between the client and her
Wispy, white tails of smoke drift around the front seat of the car towards the children sitting in the back. The smoke does not amuse the third grader; he smells, sees, and breathes in the smoke every day from his mother’s cigarette. The smoke reaches the newborn infant strapped in her car seat, unable to escape the killer substance hanging in the air. Her lungs slowly adjust to her mother’s killer habits, which then becomes the baby’s killer habit without even lifting the cigarette to her delicate mouth. This scenario occurs in many families and cars around the country, and while many smokers realize the potential, deadly effects on their own bodies, they do not realize the deadly effects on their passengers.
The study was conducted in Oxford, England over the course of 20 years, ending in the year 1969. In this period of time, the pair examined 34,440 men, their smoking habits, and later the
Post 1 part 3 Student’s Name Institutional Affiliation Post 1 part 3 Certified Nurse Practitioner Based on Mary’s experiences and interest, I would recommend that she becomes a certified nurse practitioner (CNP). The advantage of this role is that she will directly interact with the patients and hence be of maximum benefit to them (Pierce & Belling, 2011). The position is also fulfilling since one gets to gauge their performance over time due to the direct feedback from the patients. Besides, working in this role attracts higher salary due to the high educational background and the number of tasks assigned (Naylor & Kurtzman, 2010). Aside from taking care of the patient’s therefore, Mary would be assured of a stable income

The evaluation is the final part of my three mandatory written pieces of my graded unit. The final evaluation stage of the graded unit requires me to reflect on how the activity went, whilst highlighting my strengths, areas that require future development and identify my weaknesses, this, in turn, will enable me to adapt my practice to ensure I am continuously supporting patients to the standards set within The Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC). Looking back on the activity, I am proud of myself for being able to plan and follow the activity through to complication. When completing the book with Mr X I found it to be an enjoyable activity that not only offered benefits to Mr X but also to myself, it allowed me to understand the importance of building a therapeutic relationship with a patient. Building a successful therapeutic relationship required me to have good communication and interpersonal skills, (Radcliffe and Ford, 2015), that allowed me to build a relationship with Mr X based on mutual trust and respect.
Cigarettes are highly addictive and there are many different alternatives for pregnant women to help quit smoking and promote a healthier pregnancy along with a healthier future for the growing child. Smoking while pregnant has major effects during the neonatal period, after a
It is important to understand effective communication when working in health and social care. Communication should be clear and understood by the person you are having a conversation with. It is important to consider verbal communication as well as non-verbal communication and should be adapted to the service users’ ability to understand the conversation. Factors that affect communication are the location of the conversation and noise levels. To consider if the conversation should be private or to have a conversation while carrying out an activity together.
This becomes difficult to manage when the midwife has several women and babies to care for, as well as having time to mentor students such as myself. Nurses and midwives take pride in their caring and compassionate traits. However, staffing levels may influence these important attributes. Each individual nurse is different and provides the best level of care possible, yet it is found that some nurses
The essay talks about the role of the Nursing and Midwifery council and the application of the NMC Code (2015) in my practice as a student nurse. The nursing process was also deemed over and analysed in relation to the evidence based practice and application of the NMC standards. Nursing is a profession regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC 2015), an organisation set up by the Parliament to regulate nurses and midwives from England, Scotland and Wales to deliver high quality of care throughout their careers (NMC, 2015).These standards are legally binded in the NMC (2015) Code to set out professional principles for education, training and conduct as well as providing in keeping up to date skill and knowledge for nurses midwives.
Communication is described as the interchange of information, thoughts, and feelings between individuals using dialog or other methods (Kourkouta, & Papathanasiou, 2014). Communication between patients, nurses, and other healthcare professionals can influence the patient outcome subsequently, understanding what establishes an effective communication will be beneficial for nurses and other healthcare professionals. Having the skills to articulate efficiently exists beyond having verbal skills. According to Wright (2012), to establish effective communication, a nurse should develop the use of nonverbal cues such as body language, demonstrating active listening skills to facilitate assurance that the interaction remains successful, and having
According to Patterson & Krouse (2015), It is important to transfer the message in a good way, for that the communication skills is one of the most important basic skills of nursing leadership. More than that, communication in nursing can make their job efficiently and help them to communicate with a wide range of people, including the patient, patient 's family, and healthcare providers. However, unlike bad communication, which increases nursing staff problem and can lead to worsening the patient health condition, a good communication saves time and reduces the problem of nursing staff in resaving and deliver the right information. Furthermore, communication is not only talking with the patient it’s also listening to what the patient 's family and healthcare providers are saying to collect more information that helps the nurses to save lives. In this paper, I will reflect my communication that goes well with one patient.
Finally, a change in practice will be proposed to improve future practice. In relation to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Conduct (2008), the mother will be known as Lilly to promote confidentiality and privacy in the critical
It is very easy to get wrapped up in the day to day tasks that we complete as nurses. But in order to give our patients the best possible care, we must look at our day through a holistic lens. The following essay will outline the theory as created by the “lady with the lamp” Florence Nightingale. We will look at the different components that are important to a patient’s health and outline on to incorporate these components into current practice.
