Michael Pollan's Argument Essay: Why Bother?

We are like boiling frogs, Failing to act against climate change. As the severity of the situation continues to increase the world is reaching catastrophic levels. The recent article, “It's not too late to stave off the climate crisis, U.N. report finds” by Lauren Sommer, uses persuasive language to alert the public that the time to act on climate change is now. The world has enough technology and solutions to fix this problem as stated in the article whilst the author uses pathos to help support the quote.

A harsh cold reality on climate change is exposed to an unbelieving world in Mike Pearl’s “Phoenix will be almost unlivable by 2050, thanks to climate change” article. Mike pearl is a journalist for Vice Magazine in 2017, a rocky year after the election of presidential candidate Donald J. Trump, in a less than stable political climate. As well as a less than stable living climate. According to Mike Pearl, temperatures in Phoenix, Arizona, may be unlivable by 2050 due to climate change. His article is more than effective, as it’s extremely terrifying as he stresses the importance of what this will mean with pathos, logos and ethos.

People rebel when no justice being served. It is understandable why people act a certain way. Have you ever loved someone more than yourself? A person is your biggest pride and joy to be safe? Can you imagine how it feels to no longer have your pride and joy with in a split second, due to the way they look?

Pollan’s powerful essay ends with a paragraph that reads almost as a plea to farmers to consider changing their habits and reducing their dependence on these types of fertilizers which are so

Chris McCandless was in his early 20’s, he was the kind of that guy that wanted to learn and experience life without all of the material things. He wanted to be independent from his parents and friends so Chris did something that would be insane for most of us humans but to him, it wasn’t. He went into the wild of Alaska for months, in fact, McCandless even thought he could make it out alive at the end of his journey. As a matter of fact, he was known as being a risk taker and enjoyed being out and about in the nature side of the world. Many would believe that Chris McCandless went into the wild to purposely kill himself; however, I myself believe that McCandless did not do it purposely.

Michael Pollan publishes an inspiring article, "Why Bother?" to The New York Magazine in April 20, 2008. Pollan desires to discusses the problems with society and how climate changed can be impacted. With only a few words in one can tell how passionate Pollan is in illustrating his "why bother?" question.

Society’s values influence people to construct their personal mores around them, and those who do not are not accepted by society. In our society, those who have well-paying careers are valued above those who do not. So when McCandless decided against following the path society expects him to, his parents were upset. “Chris informed his parents that he had no intention of going to college. When Walt and Billie suggested that he needed a college degree to attain a fulfilling career, Chris answered that careers were demeaning ‘twentieth-century inventions,’ more of a liability than an asset, and that he would do fine without one, thank you” (114).

Michael Pollan’s Escape from the Western Diet connects well with what Mary Maxfield says in her article. Both Pollan and Maxfield talk about the ways that dieting is taking over American people’s healths and causing them to become even unhealthier. In Mary Maxfield’s argument she talks about how people believe everything that diet industries say, even though they know that the information they give you is false. This connects really well with what Michael Pollan talks about in his article, which is that people know that these theories that are used for the Western diet are not accurate, but yet they still decide to use the Western diet to help them become healthier.

Climate Change is one of the most unsettling problems mankind faces today. It leaves an impact on every single living thing, on every continent, no matter the privilege. Long term investment must be used to change the world. People must do more than just change out their light bulbs for eco-friendly ones, or drive fuel efficient cars. A choice as simple as changing our diets could reduce a human’s carbon footprint by fifty percent.

Pollution can 't be stopped unless we all take action. How do we do that? There are already many groups working extraordinarily hard to make progress but it still isn 't enough. The only way we can make change is if we spread the word and help. Some ways we can help is stop littering, volunteer in clean up groups, and bring reusable grocery bags when shopping to reduce trash.
