Sure, there was a chest of gold coins but he also gained knowledge of the soul of the world. Paulo Coleho uses characters including the crystal merchant, the gypsy woman, Fatima, and the Englishman to explore the theme that someone has to realize and pursue their personal legend to be truly happy.

When Santiago wakes up from his recurring dream of a treasure in Egypt, he seeks for mentors like Melchizedek, who helps him realize that the dream is his Personal Legend. A Personal Legend is something that one has always wanted to accomplish and one’s purpose in life. Melchizedek tells Santiago “when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it” (22).

In the extraordinary book " The Alchemist" Santiago searches for a hidden treasure but fulfills his Personal Legend as well. A Personal Legend is your life's spiritual purpose. It's a calling that awakens a deep desire and passion to live with a sense of purpose for something greater than yourself. It's ones destiny, our purpose in life and pursuing that purpose. Santiago must decide what he will make of his life.

He gained skills and experience in things across the board, from how to clean crystals, to the 5 obligations of Muslims, to the basics of alchemy. Santiago learns from the wise, and educated, but also learns the meaning of a true friendship. Overall it is true that reaching one 's personal legend is life 's greatest treasure, but often the journey is just as valuable.

In the book The Alchemist, it is said that to lead a satisfying life you must first complete your personal legend. Before Santiago met Melchizedek (King of Salem) he did not know what a personal legend was. Melchizedek said it is what you have always wanted to accomplish (Coelho 23). Santiago has an epiphany when he realizes that if you never change and take risks you will never move forward. He wants to find his “personal legend,” or true desire, and to obtain this he needs to change his own nature. He must be willing to give up whatever is necessary to achieve this goal, including freedom. On Santiago’s journey he becomes employed by a crystal merchant that never achieved his personal legend. The merchant resisted change and never accomplished his dreams.

A personal legend is your purpose of life. It is your life calling that opens a deep wanting to live your life with a purpose of something greater than yourself. In this book, The Alchemist, Santiago is looking for his personal legend. The author, Paulo Coelho, uses a shepherd to characterise the theme of one's personal legend. Coelho shows that Santiago is trying to go through his journey and personal legend, through other people.

Santiago is a young and adventurous shepherd. He has a prophetic dream every time he lays supine under a sycamore tree near the ruins of a church. With the help from the gypsy woman and Melchizedek, Santiago is able to interpret and fully understand the subliminal message from the recurring dream. The dream reflects his Personal Legend, which is to seek treasure at the Egyptian pyramids. Since Santiago is in need of money, and his flock is too cumbersome to bring along, Santiago must make a tough decision to sell his possessions, and sets off to Tangier.
