In the beginning the book ponyboy grows up hating the Socs. The Socs have have all the power and money and ponyboy hates them for this and also hates them because they are always picking on and fighting greasers. When Ponyboy was thinking about what the people in the gang do what they do, he assumed that Greasers and Socs are divergent. Ponyboy thinks to himself, “We deserve a lot of our trouble...both of them have too much energy, too much feeling, with no way to blow it off.” (Hinton 16) This quote has a deep meaning because it shows that the Socs choices are more narrow, displaying that when a Soc does something wrong, they could lose their fame and their luxury. On the other hand, the greasers have boundless choices because they have nothing to lose. They are already at the bottom, so most of the things they do, won’t really change what they already have.

For instance, they have money, and money can buy whatever they want. Similarly, Pony expressed: “I really couldn’t see what the Socs would have to worry about - good grades, good cars, good girls, madras and Mustangs and Corvairs - Man, I thought, if I had worries like that I’d consider myself lucky.” Assuming that the Socs have no problems, Pony comes to the conclusion that it’s only the Greasers that have all the rough breaks. Next, Pony thinks that the Socs aren’t fair because they jump Greasers for fun and don’t think about the effect that it has on the Greasers. Furthermore, the Socs don’t fight fair, they gang up on the Greasers and they intimidate them.

Then there 's the Greasers, who live poorly and get blamed for most of the things that go down in the city. Ponyboy, and Johnny, two Greasers, that at first, clang to the fact that they hated Socs. All they wanted to do was fight the other gang to look tough and earn respect. In the beginning of the story, Ponyboy wishes he looked tough.

In other words, fight. They decided to have this rumble for many reasons. One reason would be to figure out what places the other gang can't go, and just because the gangs were tired of each other. They wanted to solve all their problems. The greasers decided to dedicate this rumble to Jonny.

Sometimes, it could help you, but not in a good way, because while it’s a solution, it is also a problem.
