I’ve always wanted a career in a field where I would be able to do the greatest good in the community. I applied to the Mental Health Clinical Counseling program, because I would like to be a Licensed Professional Counselor. My goal is to work with vulnerable populations, and address issues that affect the trauma, mental, and physical stability of the clients I serve. My long-term career goal is to practice independently within my own agency. I would like to open an agency that offers a variety of service to low income families with my community. I will assist people with obtaining resources, and overcoming life challenges. I foster an intense passion for social justice and equality, so I will be an advocate for change. I am deserving of
Section 1: Professional Development Plan For most of my life I have been motivated to help people so when I made the decision to continue my education at Walden University, I knew that I was ready for the journey. I am currently seeking a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and I am expected to graduate in the winter of 2025. This paper was written on June 30th, 2023, with the intent of further understanding my motivations for seeking this degree as well as visualizing the type of counselor I want to be in the future. Throughout this paper, I also discuss what is expected of me throughout my degree program, counseling career, and overall professional development.
I am applying for a career in social services because I have always had an interest in making a difference to othere peoples lives. Being a Paramedic I feel I could ultimatley forful this role, and change people lives for the better. A family member of mine struggled with an alcohol addiction for the majority of his life, not only did I see the effects it made to his life but I also observed the consequences he faced fughting for his life. This personal experience of mine influenced me massively to aim for a career that helps people for the better.
Most leaders within our agency were either counselors at some point or they have Rehabilitation Counseling degrees. I believe in being knowledgeable in all aspects of our operations, especially in the broadest service provided by our agency, rehab counseling. This program is the first step in securing a future within the agency. While I love my current role, I look forward to continuing with the progress that I have made within the agency. I look to gain knowledge and first-hand experience of being a counselor so that I can apply what I learn to agency programs.
I have always been the counselor for my friends and have always wanted to try my best to improve individuals' lives. I have experienced many of my close friends go through stages of mental health issues, depression, anxiety, abusive relationships, etc. and my goal has always been to make their lives better. I took the steps to help them improve their mental health and wellbeing. I originally got my Bachelors of Arts studying Allied Health because my plan was to become a nurse but after a lot of brainstorming I knew I had a different path I should be following.
My number one goal is to be nonjudgmental and have an attentive ear. I hope to provide any client with the option of potentially feeling supported and to feel as though they can unload any emotions or matters that are no longer useful for them. The aim behind my motives is that a client's interaction with me will start or continue the course of healing for their hearts and mind, and to further spur them on in their endeavors. The state of Illinois scope of practice aligns with my goals and would further encourage and grow my desires throughout my career. The Counselor-Education.com (2022) website states “the application of clinical counseling theory and techniques to prevent and alleviate mental and emotional disorders and psychopathology and to promote optimal mental health, rehabilitation, treatment, testing, assessment, and evaluation.
An innovative, creative leader. An advocate for social justice and inclusion. An empathetic and compassionate human to trust. I aspire to wear many different hats in the future; most importantly, I hope to be remembered for my positive contributions to society and for leaving the world a better place than how I found it.
I chose mental health counseling as a profession due to personal experiences in my life. Choosing to become a professional counselor is not only a personal commitment to me, but to others, and to society as a whole. As a survivor of domestic violence, I felt a strong desire and need to make a difference in lives of many suffering from: personal issues like anger management, depression, suicidal thoughts, aging, parenting, self-image, relational problems, stress, addiction, and women involved with domestic violence. My goal would be to provide the proper assessment and diagnosis to provide necessary treatment such as: psychotherapy, substance abuse treatment, and crisis management.
To enhance my experience I would like to work with veterans, adult homeless, and the mentally ill. My objective is to be admitted into the Master of Science degree program with an option in Rehabilitation Counseling, where I can grow and take on new challenges. Ultimately, I would like to assume further educational and gain work experience that would allow me to work more effectively with people with disabilities. Most importantly, I would like to work for an agency where I can build a career in counseling and possibly management. I am driven to be the best at what I do.
Personal Statement 10 years ago, I had a dream that I was a neuroscientist who was working on helping children with mental disability. After that dream it has been my goal and determination to make that dream come to pass. Since I was a child I have always dreamed of being able to work with the future generation of this world. Being able to help children that are not able to help themselves is my goal in life. At the age of 12 I was babysitting and volunteering at children’s hospital and centers.
I realized then I wanted to do something to make a difference in peoples lives like all the people that helped us through the situation did. I thought maybe being a counselor would be something for me but I saw social work and it felt like it was more of a fit for me. Seeing how many families struggle on a daily basis I wanted to be able to help them.
Introduction/career goals: Upon graduating, I plan on seeking employment in a public school setting. Even though I am open to working at any level, my first preference would be working at the elementary level. Working at this level would enable me to work teachers to catch and/or start early with literacy problems. Accomplishments in learning: Studying for this degree has taught me the importance of insuring the future leaders are 21st Century ready. It is not enough to just expose students to information/literacy skills, we make sure they apply understand how to apply it to real world situations.
The thing that I would like to do as a career is to become a local counselor to help troubled teens to show them that they are not alone in the battle of growing up and surviving with parents that may be abusive or they have a series of mental diagnosis’s that effect their daily living. My issues as a child were that I had a history of physical and mental abuse, but other things that I have are mental issues or just symptoms of not acting indirectly to what normal individuals understand. My mental diagnosis was Bipolar with Psychotic features, ADD, OCD, ODD, PTSD, Panic Disorder, and Intermittent Explosive Disorder, which has affected my social compatibility with peers because I had severe anger and depression that didn’t do well on my goals. I found counseling and behavioral adjustment facilities to help me handle my
Through my experience leading compliance efforts on multibillion-dollar infrastructure projects for clients such as AECOM, one of the world’s largest environmental and energy engineering firms, and DC Water and Sewer Authority, the largest advanced waste water treatment plant in the world, I have gained an immense interest in energy infrastructure, which I strongly desire to employ in Africa. According to a July 25, 2015 White House report, more than 600 million people in sub-Saharan Africa lack access to electricity due to poor infrastructure and low electricity generation capacities. My long-term career goal is to build a diverse portfolio of reliable, clean, and cost-effective renewable energy technologies (e.g. electrical grids) while aiming to be the #1 clean energy provider for rural and suburban communities across sub-Saharan Africa. In doing so, I hope to promote and inspire a culture of responsible and efficient energy consumption, not only across the continent of
College was always one of my long term goals as I continued with my education. Throughout the years I began to work harder and harder so I could secure my future. I knew that getting to college would not be easy. I am about to embark on a four year journey in one of the hardest fields to pursue. I will continue my education as a Nursing major at a four year university.
USC students are known to be involved. Briefly describe a non-academic pursuit (such as service to community or family, a club or sport, or work, etc.,) that best illustrates who you are, and why it is important to you. (250 word limit) Growing up, I was different from my peers. While my friends enjoyed playing in the park after finishing their homework, I entertained myself by creating things with my Lego sets.
