There are many distinct elements of a film noir. Strong lighting features, tough female characters, a twisted love story, and crowded yet simple sets. These are just a few of those elements and they all make Blade Runner a film noir. One of the more noticeable elements of a film noir is lighting. Throughout the film, lighting is used to set the mood and atmosphere of each scene. When Deckard and the other police enter the apartment to find what they believe to be a fish scale, they open the door and step into dramatic lighting created with venetian blinds. Often, there is one who is predominantly seen as bad, and another who is good. The two women balance each other throughout the movie and help to sway the audience’s opinions toward the hero of the film. In this case, Blade Runner has two women, both of whom are replicants. Pris, one of the replicants who Deckard is hunting down, and Rachael, a replicant who Tyrell classifies as special. Rachael’s positive attitude and feelings toward Deckard makes the audience want him to succeed, even though his job is not one that some people would agree with. Deckard and Rachael become the ‘good guys’ when compared to Pris and Roy. Pris is trying to survive. She wants to extend her four year life span just like Roy, making them willing to try anything in order to survive. Even though what they want is something all humans want, a long life, their approach compared to Rachael makes the audience want Deckard to succeed. Rachael even helps Deckard and proves her strength by killing one of the replicants he was hunting. The two women provide protection for Roy and Deckard,
Film noir movies often have stylistic characteristics such as exaggerated lighting and shadows. Scarlet Street contained many subjective camera shots while also using exaggerated shadows, for example during the first scene in the movie, there is an emphasis on the mans shadow as he walks into the room. Which brings me to a crucial point, Black and white filmmaking. Black and white style is considered to be an essential attribute for a film noir movie, black and white allows the director to emphasize on distorting images, for example use of the venetian blind shot. Another continuous pattern of film noir is to include main stock characters, this film contains: an anti-hero and a femme fatale, these stock characters are always seen in noir films.
The crime scene at the beginning of the film, for example, used a low angle view to show the body floating from underwater. Low key lighting is often represented when scenes are shot inside Norma’s home. The interior shots are also tightly framed shots with extreme camera angles it gives off a depressed, claustrophobic environment. The lighting in Donnie Darko movie is a key component of composition which creates our sense of illuminating for people and things. This movie uses two sources of lighting; natural light, such as daylight, when the scene is in an outdoor area for example, walking from school, at home, waiting at bus stop, or playing outside of the school on sunny days. But when the director goes for a close-up or a medium shot, he uses diffusion or bouncing light to hide the hard quality of light from the sun. Diffusion and bounced light is in the movies since the late 1910’s and early 1920’s. Keeping the exposure of the actor’s face allows the audience to believe what is going on. The limitation of power on the non-studio shots makes lighting fixtures difficult to power.
