Presidents usually are born into wealthy families, but not for Andrew Johnson. Johnson began his life in poverty, while he worked his way up to president. During Andrew Johnson’s life, it brought in great possibilities while having consequences at the same time.
The early life of Andrew Johnson was rather sad at first. Andrew Johnson was born on December 29, 1808 at Raleigh, North Carolina. His parents, Jacob and Mary McDonough Johnson, were very poor. Johnson only had one brother to keep him company, whose name was William Johnson. At the age of three, the Johnsons’ were left fatherless due to an incident at their father’s work. Their father had jumped into a freezing river when a man had fell in. He saved the man, but died in the process. Since the Johnsons’ were very poor, Andrew Johnson didn’t have any formal, rock-solid education. At the age of fourteen, Andrew was approached by a tailor, who was willing to teach him about the ways of tailoring. In 1827, Andrew Johnson was married to Eliza McCardle. She helped further Johnson’s education and helped prosper his business. She gave him five children to take care of, whose names were Martha, Charles, Mary, Robert, and Andrew. They all moved Greeneville, Tennessee to start anew. Johnson continued his tailor career until the year 1829, when he moved to politics. Johnson managed to be elected to a couple political offices, such as governor and mayor. In the year 1861, the United States was in war with itself, which was the Civil War. Tennessee wanted to secede from the North because of how they supported slavery. Andrew Jackson was born in March 25, 1767. He grew up poor and his father died before he was born. His home was in Waxhaws, a place where there were battles between the Native Americans and the whites. His mother eventually moved into her brother-in-law’s house and work as a maid there. Jackson was known for being short-tempered and getting in trouble many times.
The actions and words of Andrew Johnson were very contradictory. The cartoon states: "Treason is a crime and must be made odious, and traitors must be punished". He told the people of a reconstruction plan that was supposed to punish the confederate rebels. Johnson did the opposite by ordering many pardons The Northern Republicans in Congress were ostracized because he continually vetoed their attempts at reconstruction.

Johnson had known hard times growing up and experienced extreme poverty in a brief career as a teacher working in a low income area. At the beginning of Andrew Johnson’s Presidency many believed that he would punish the South for their treason during the Civil War and support African American suffrage. (Page 83) However, this changed when Johnson began to set up his plans for Reconstruction in 1865 when he moved to pardon all Confederates that pledged an oath of loyalty and the returning of all of their property with the exclusion of slaves. The only exception to this would be for high-ranking Confederate generals who owned property that exceeded over $20,000 were required to apply for Presidential pardons. With the passing of the Black Codes and violence seen towards African Americans in the South, prompted the Radical Republicans to take matters into their hands.

Jackson built new roads and made other infrastructural improvements especially in the south that were of benefit to the more working class “common man”. Jackson also introduced many Acts and Movements that would help to improve the United States and improve the lives of all US citizens. This was based on the fact that Jackson did not hail from a wealthy or “elite” background but from the working class western state of Tennessee.

Andrew Jackson did not follow the same path to presidency as a his predecessors, all of whom were born into rich and powerful families. Jackson was born to immigrants and grew up very poor, never attending college. His childhood contributed to him wanting to help out those who were poor as well. Despite his poverty and lack of college education, Jackson was able to make a name for himself in Tennessee, a frontier state at the time. He helped create the Tennessee state constitution, and worked his way through the ranks politically, becoming a House Representative in 1796 and Senator in 1797.
Andrew Jackson during his time was considered a very patriotic politician he hated the rich, he hated the Indian, and loved the idea of slavery. It has been said that he grew up not educated and had a bad up bring but still managed to get to a high political suture. Jackson at one point was general and had a very decorated portfolio, which made sense he would become president, Andrew was most well know for “The Battle of New Orleans” where Andrew Jackson, prevented the British Army and General Edward Pakenham, from seizing New Orleans nearing the end of that war.

Born into a non-aristocratic poor family, somewhere in the Carolina’s on March 14, 1767, was a man named Andrew Jackson. Jackson, also called “Old Hickory” was a very bold proactive man in American history. From being a military hero and founding the democratic party to enacting the trail of tears and dismantling the of the Bank of the United States, the man and his legacy are a prominent topic for scholarly debate. Some believe he was a great president and some believe he was the worse president. But if you look at it from a moral perceptive or in the eyes of a foreigner, Jackson’s legacy was far more villainous than heroic.
