Legacies Nikki Giovanni Analysis

The story of Giovanni and Lusanna has a lot more content then what the title portrays it to be. What I mean by that is that it is entirely based on the factual account of what happened

The short Poem titled “Legacies,” by Nikki Giovanni, describes an interaction between a grandmother and her granddaughter. The grandmother wants to teach her granddaughter how to make rolls but the granddaughter refuses saying, ‘“i don’t want to know how to make no rolls”’ (Giovanni, line 11). However, the author writes that both did not say what they truly meant. The grandmother did not just want to teach her daughter how to make rolls, but she also wanted to teach her independence. However, the granddaughter did not want to learn independence because she wanted to still depend on her grandmother for something, even after she is gone.

I found Nikki Giovanni tone excited because of the way he used vivid words to describe the things that were in the library. He was very excited when he first lied eyes on the desk with the wooden chair. It was a big moment for him because there was a new world waiting to be discover.

“Nikki-Rosa” Poem Analysis In the poem “Nikki- Rosa,” Nikki Giovanni writes with diction and imagery to prove that’s she had a happy childhood in spite of her family’s hardships. Giovanni creates a poem, that although short in words, provides a lasting effect on the reader. Giovanni’s creative use of language and descriptive words, the distinction of black culture from white culture, and memories of average times that made her childhood unique and happy made this poem distinct and exceptional. Giovanni frequently references to her happy childhood in her poem using words and phrases that create an image in your mind showing you that her childhood was in fact a happy one.

In the novel Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin, the protagonist David’s obsession with maintaining a traditionally masculine façade is what leads to the demise of all of his relationships. David’s masculine presentation and insecurity over his own homosexuality are frowned upon by Western society in the 1950s, the novel’s setting. This general societal consensus leads to David’s internalization of homophobia, eventually leading to the ruin of his relationships with family, friends, lovers, and himself. Western society’s view of homosexuality and masculinity at that time is the primary reason for the expiry of David’s relationships.

Maya Angelou was a strong African-American women who made an influential impact on the Civil Rights Movement, in bother her actions, and her literature. Her life experiences and courage helped others, and made her work influential. During Maya’s early life, she experienced many hardships that shaped her into the person many remember her as. Born on April 4, 1928, she only lived in St. Louis, MO for three years before her parents got divorced, and Maya, along with her mother and brother, moved in with her grandparents in Arkansas. At the age of eight, raped by her mother’s boyfriend, Maya learned the power that words possess.

In Giovanni’s room, James Baldwin uses a lot of literary devices such as foreshadowing, flashbacks, making this book an important book to teach to high schoolers. For example, he also used imagery when describing his situation with Joey. His change in tone showed how quickly he realized that what he was doing was wrong, and he wanted to fix it. His emotion changed from affection towards Joey into shame. Flashbacks are constantly used in this book, making it a bit confusing as well.

Giovanni himself describes Guillaume as, “Having more hands than an octopus, and no dignity.” (Baldwin 1956:54) According to Lorelai Cederstrom, “Baldwin examines the sexual roles which are forced upon Black (in this case, Italian) and white as a result of their social conditioning.” (Cederstrom 1984:176) In both Baldwin and Jacobs’ novels, the microaggressions towards Giovanni and Linda come from the fact that due to their race and nationality, they are treated as second class

The poems in this essay both talk about being a woman. “Phenomenal Woman” by Maya Angelou is about more of a confident woman while “Woman” by Nikki Giovanni is about a woman who wants a man to change for her. The poems though very different, are also similar because they both talk about confidence as a woman. By the end of both poems the narrators both know that they are women who are strong and do not need anyone else 's acceptance but their own. They know their own self worth and that is enough for them.
