Leadership Journal Report Assignment Skills Inventory: The skills inventory, which includes technical, human, and conceptual skill, helps me to measure my three leadership competencies of me. It lets me to understand how my skills separate to three leadership skill approaches. According to our textbook, although all of three skills are important to leaders, the importance of each skill varies between different management levels. By scoring it, I got 19 in technical skill, 21 in conceptual skill, and 25 in human skill, which is the highest one. Obviously, I’m a man who likes to keep everyone around me feels comfortable but doesn’t like to told others what to do in my work place. According to the figure 4.1, the leadership grid from the textbook, I think I will be putted in the “Country –Club Management”. Comparing with other style, the country-club style represents a low concern about the task accomplishment coupled with a high concern for interpersonal relationship (Northouse, p.79). To be honest, I think the task accomplishments are important as well as the relationship. However, it is relatively hard to me to be serious to tell my coworkers doing their jobs. I know, sometimes we have to sacrifice harmonious atmospheres for keeping the task done. In Chinese, we have a proverb said, businesses are businesses and relations are relations, which means we should separate the private emotion from our works. The thought of keeping good relationships with everyone seems kind of a weakness for me in work place. In my opinion, a traditional leader should be authoritative to his/her followers. Therefore, I’m considering changing myself a little bit to focus more on doing tasks, but not caring too much about the …show more content…
Among other things, it predicts that directive leadership is effective with ambiguous tasks, that supportive leadership is effective with repetitive tasks, that participative leadership is effective when tasks are unclear and subordinates are autonomous, and that achievement-oriented leadership is effective for challenging tasks. By taking the Path-Goal Leadership Questionnaire, I know that which way suit me to lead my followers. In my case, I score 27 in participative, which is the highest of four options. As a participative leader, I do reference the suggestions from the followers for making decisions sometimes but not always. Sometimes the leaders’ behaviors depend on the characteristic of the subordinates and tasks. For example, if the tasks are complex or the subordinates are not able to comprehend their task by themselves, the leader supposed to be more directive leadership to help followers by clarifying the path to the goal, making it less ambiguous. To be an effective leader, I have to behave different in different situations, sometime directive, sometime
Stay true to yourself, be an independent leader, not a subjective follower. If your friends jumped off a cliff, would you jump
Leadership competencies are essential skills that every leader should possess, especially in the field of operations management. Operations management is a complex and demanding field that requires leaders to have a deep understanding of the industry, as well as the ability to manage people, processes, and resources effectively. A leader who possesses the necessary competencies in operations management can ensure that their organization is running efficiently and effectively, which is crucial for
Hands-on guidance and feedback 7. Ability to ask tough questions 8. Organizing for collaboration" (p. 112-115). This quality is not my behavior or approach to leadership.
A good leader needs to know how to handle certain situations and if they don’t then they need to know how to use the tools and people around them to get the task done efficiently and effectively. When serving you need to know how to handle any situation thrown at you while also being able to listen to those put in charge of
My scores from the path goal questionnaire indicate that I am leading to two different paths of leadership. They are directive and achievement-oriented styles of leadership. Directive style: My role as a charge nurse is to oversee our unit. I am responsible for keeping a high level of patient care, assessing other nurses and serving as an educational resource for nurses. I am also ensuring that my directions and expectations are clearly understood by the staff members.
Leader Competencies are leadership skills and behaviors that contribute to superior performance. Leaders outdated skills and behaviors encouraged change over many years. The three main categories of competences are to Lead, Develop, and Achieve. Army leaders serve to lead others, develop themselves, environment and profession as a whole, and to also achieve organizational goals. In order for an Army leader to lead they must apply the attributes to guide Soldiers towards a common goal and mission accomplishments.
I’m a hard-working and motivated person, because I believe that with enough practice anyone can be good at anything. As someone who is born in a collective culture, I’m harmonious and I actively seek to promote harmony and peace in groups and individuals. Because of my harmonious nature, I try to be friendly and kind to people, especially to those that feel left out. Therefore, I’m able to get along well with people while working in groups. In addition, I’m self-critical, therefore, I’m good at knowing my weaknesses and what I’m lacking.
1. My philosophy of leadership is about collaboration and teamwork. Respecting and treating everyone the same, is key to supporting a good team atmosphere. I believe when a leader puts effort and care into assisting others, then their peers and followers will naturally want to support them. It is also important for a leader to recognize, that advocacy must never become so important that the critical elements of leadership are neglected (e.g. policy enforcement, command support, etc...).
Path goal theory thoroughly examined the relationship between leaders and followers. It examine how leaders motivate subordinates in pursuit of objectives. It implied that leadership is not enforced on subordinates but exercised in conjunction with them, recognising that often leadership is wanted by those that are led, not imposed on them. Path goal theory emphasise on directive leadership which involved clear command, recognise and assign tasks, indicating how and when the task to be completed and the standards expected. This is a style of leadership that is familiar to most commanders and leaders.
But first, you should have clarity of your own identity and knowledge. Once you have your own foundation with being a leader, I think that as a leader you can transition and understand the behavior of others that may be on your team. When acknowledging others on the team, I think that it is important to identify strengths and weaknesses of others and the team. As you can see, I have outlined what I believe makes a great and effective leader.
Self-leadership assessment is an important exercise in understanding the basic qualities that each individual has that could make them good or bad leaders for any organization. The use of contemporary theories of leadership to assess the suitability of the individuals for a given task is very important in understanding the leadership abilities of everyone, using self-assessment tool called Seven Habits Profile. Through this, individuals are able to learn about their strengths and weakness, based on their score. For this assignment, I will conduct personal leadership assessment through the seven habits profile, as well as to underscore the strengths and weaknesses of the results (Dionneet al., 2004). This is followed by formulation of SMART
Case 6.1 Three Shifts, Three Supervisors 1. Based on the principles of path-goal theory, describe why Art and Bob appear to be less effective than Carol. Carol leadership style of Participative matches up well with the task characteristics of the followers on her team. Unfortunately, Art and Bob leadership skills are not matching well with the needs of their team. Art is currently being Directive but his team needs Supportive and Bob is Supportive but needs to be more Achievement Oriented.
There are certain traits of being a leader, but I have shown compassion, motivation, and sacrifice for others. I show these skills by being a floor officer on my dormitory floor and also when I’m in my trade. Being a floor officer means motivating the others on the floor, since I’m currently the Vice President of the floor officers. I still have a boss, which is the President of the floor officers, but I also have my own duties to follow. As a floor officer, I need to set the example that I could obey the ¬rules with no issues and motivate the other people on the floor to do the same
Leadership Analysis Introduction One of the popular definitions of a leader is, "The only definition of a leader is someone who has followers." According to Blake and Mouton (1964), this is the best leadership style to be adopted. Team leaders pay high and equal attention towards the production needs and people relations. This method relies heavily on making employees feel themselves to be constructive parts of the company (Blake and
