The church was a central factor of the medieval times. “Medieval Christians believed they could only find salvation by following the guidance, laws, and teachings of the church, for according to Catholic beliefs, the church and its clergy had been proclaimed by Christ to be the only intermediary (go-between) between God and human beings”(“The Medieval, Catholic Roots of the Elizabethan World”). In the medieval times, the church overruled the peoples’ lives. Everyone believed that God, Heaven, and Hell existed. Everyone believed that the only way to Heaven was through the church.

Many labels were used to characterize the Middle Ages, however the best were The Dark Ages, The Age of Feudalism, and The Age of Faith. The Dark Ages accurately identifies the Middle Ages because of all the death, destruction, and plague throughout. The Middle Ages followed the decline of the Roman Empire, which causes very harsh times across Europe. Also this time period consists of the plague which virtually slaughters one-third of Europe.

Some was to improve the methods of the church and some was to improve their lifestyle for the opportunity of themselves. The purpose in all this was to serve God and fellow the authority of the Roman Catholic Church. The power of the Roman Catholic Church was the greatest when the cathedrals were built and from birth to death middle ages, population were dominated by the church. The Labels of the Middle Ages From 500 AD to 1400, the Middle Ages in Europe have had three different ages. These ages are; the Age of Faith, the Dark Ages, and the Age of Feudalism. Europe used to be controlled by the roman Empire, but when the empire fell, the middle ages began which were full of change. They best describe the era because of invasion from barbarians, strong belief in religion, and a new economic and social system called feudalism.

A social code called chivalry was created for knights in medieval Europe, stressing ideas such as courage, loyalty, and devotion which is seen as a good thing. The ideal knight was loyal, brave courageous, and protected the weak and poor, but most knights failed to do this, treating the lower classes brutally (Doc 5). Gothic style architecture could also be considered part of the Golden Age because of its extravagance. Unfortunately, large churches called Cathedrals were built in the style using the church's dirty money; it showed off the church’s wealth (Doc 9). The time period could be called Golden since older knowledge was preserved and influenced the future.

It achieved this goal by creating devout Christian followers who wanted to spread their newfound devotion to religion. While the church was first created to spread good, the church became increasingly corrupt during Martin Luther’s time. During the Middle Ages, the Catholic Church decided to teach that salvation was possible through works of righteousness that pleased God. While this statement does encourage acts of good, the church abused its meaning by proposing a new means of absolving oneself from sin. This new method was purchasing indulgences.

The Middle Ages were a very complicated and crucial element of our world. Feudalism was a huge contributor to conduct the organization of the government and military. The manor is very significant to the feudal system because it gives location and there was work completed by each role on the manor. The role of the serf farmer was a critical part of the manor, because it was the base and platform for the rest of the classes. Feudalism and manorialism were key aspects of the operating society of the medieval times, and there were a variety of roles to support it.

During the Medieval Times a lot of people had their faith into the church. Several people looked up to the church and included it into their everyday life. The vast majority of the people in the towns would go to the church daily. Any other ways the people would spend their time during this time would be by farming, or any activities. Some people would take advantage of the people during this time period knowing they didn’t have any other stuff to do.

In the 5th to 15th centuries, the merciless attacks from barbarians caused the Holy Roman Empire to fall, destroying the bond that held Europe together. Unstable without sufficient leadership or societal order, Europe resorted to rule under the barbarians. This fateful turn of events entered a new era of annihilation which led Europe into darkness for ten centuries. In a dark era, one faces fear, disorder and discomfort. The Middle Ages is best renamed the Dark Ages because the lack of organization created discomfort.

Starting in the 5th century lasting until the 15th century, Europe is marked by the Medieval Ages, also known as the Middle Ages. The Medieval Ages began around year 495 AD. The fall of the Western Roman Empire often denotes the start of the Medieval period that lasts almost 1,000 years. The Medieval era is signified by castles, crusaders, and the rise of religion, specifically, Catholicism and their cathedrals (MiddleAges.org).

The Middle Ages followed immediately after the fall of the Roman Empire. The Black Plague had taken millions of lives and the Hundred Years’ War had decimated the people of Europe. After that period of distress, the survivors were concerned about salvation, protection, food and shelter, political power, which came in the form of wealth, and the Church. Gothic architecture was another staple of the Middle Ages. Gothic cathedrals were looming, formidable structures with spires that pointed up towards God and the heavens.

The essence of god 's, religion, and believing in a higher power who controls your life was a very agreeable proposal for most back a thousand years ago. Having the structure of living a life with rules and morals was a positive thing for the chaos of amorphous period of uncertainty. It’s a conviction that provides togetherness, the belief in the afterlife, and purpose to one’s life. During the Middle Ages, religion in the form of Christianity dominated the lives of all citizens, rich and poor. In the Ancient times, gods and goddesses defined how people acted, lived, and died.

The Christian church dominance was a massive part in the medieval times, it shaped the society. The church made the rules and influenced people to follow god. People who didn’t believe in god and followed other gods would have been converted or killed. The Christian church had the power, money and land, they dominated medieval Europe. The majority of events, religious and secular were established and controlled through the Church. Without the Church’s firm grip during this time, life in the middle ages may have been chaotic and turbulent. The laws and rules that the Church established created stability and moral standards for orderly living. As the Church’s power increased and crossed over into secular affairs, the Church’s ability to declare and oust kings became threatening to the state. The struggle for power resulted in the Treaty of Worms where a balance of powers between the Pope and the King were agreed upon.
