Zeinab Ossaili - 7654795 Synthesis Lab – Experiment 1: Separation By Distillation The objective of this experiment is: • To use simple distillation to purify liquids. • To experience the limits of simple distillation when it comes to separations. • To use fractional distillation to separate mixtures of liquids. Method used: Distillation 1 – Distillation of an organic liquid containing a non-volatile coloured impurity • The distillation apparatus was assembled in regards to the instructions given and this was done by setting up the heating mantle followed by the round bottom flask, the reduction adapter, still head, thermometer adapter and finally the thermometer. • After the above was assembled the still head was connected to the condenser which had the tubing connected to allow water in and out. • The condenser was then connected to the receiver bend with a joint clip and a sample vial was placed just below its opening. • The apparatus was then clamped at two points the flask and the condenser. • A sample of (~30mL) of liquid mixture A was collected in a round bottom flask that contained anti-bumping granules. • The solution was then heated gently until the solution begins to distil and that is when the first temperature was recorded. • Samples were collected every (3 mL) using sample vials and the temperature was recorded during each fraction. • The distillation was stopped when (3 mL) of the solution was left in the distillation flask because letting it boil

Using the thermometer, the temperature was measured and recorded. Then, the 25-mL graduated cylinder was filled with 25 mL of distilled water, and its mass was measured and recorded. The density of the water was found using the temperature and the Density of water index. Moreover, the calculated volume of water was calculated using the formula of density, and the difference between observed volume and calculated volume was found. This process was then repeated using the 50-mL beaker and the results were recorded.
First of all, an alka-seltzer is an a little tablet that helps with multiple pain. For example, alka-seltzer helps with migraines, headaches, sinus headaches, muscle pain, and symptoms of pain. Alka-seltzer contains aspirin, sodium, hydrogen carbonate, citric acid, natural flavors, and artificial flavors. These are just some of the ingredients. When an alka-seltzer dissolves it releases all of the medicine.
The lab started off by measuring critical materials for the lab: the mass of an an empty 100 mL beaker, mass of beaker and copper chloride together(52.30 g), and the mass of three iron nails(2.73 g). The goal of this experiment is to determine the number of moles of copper and iron that would be produced in the reaction of iron and copper(II) chloride, the ratio of moles of iron to moles of copper, and the percent yield of copper produced. 2.00 grams of copper(II) chloride was added in the beaker to mix with 15 mL of distilled water. Then, three dry nails are placed in the copper(II) chloride solution for approximately 25 minutes. The three nails have to be scraped clean by sandpaper to make the surface of the nail shiny; if the nails are not clean, then some unknown substances might accidentally mix into the reaction and cause variations of the result.
Introduction: In this assignment, I will be doing two experimentations on examining the impact of temperature on the Alka-Seltzer’s response time. The first experimentation that I will be doing involves some water that is room temperature. The second experimentation that I will be doing involves some water that is very hot. If I want to be able to figure out the impact of the temperature on water, I will have to document the time it will take for the Alka-Seltzer to go into solution.
In acidic aqueous solution, a buffer is formed by the dissociation of the acid: HA ⇄ H+ + A- Hence, when acid is added, the excess H+ reacts with the A- to form more HA, lowering the pH and minimising the effect of the addition of acid. When alkali is added, the OH- reacts with the dissociated H+ to form water, which reduces the effect of the alkali by restoring the pH to normal levels. Alka Seltzer acts as a buffer because the citrate ions in solution (C6H5O73-) are able to react with H+ when acid is added, to form citric acid, C6H8O7. This neutralises the acid, increasing the pH. The excess HCO3- ions also react with H+ to form CO2 and water, hence lowering the pH and reducing the acidity of the solution. The HCO3- ions also act as a buffer when alkali is added, because they react with OH- to create water and CO32- ions, increasing the pH and reducing the effect of the addiction of alkali.

Pertaining to the appearance of the oil and water before the reaction occurs, oil “sits” on top of the water because oil is less dense than water, and therefore rests on the surface of the water. The Alka-Seltzer, or effervescent tablet, reacts with the water and produces bubbles of carbon dioxide gas. This gas is less dense than both the water and oil, so it travels the the surface of the liquid, pulling a small amount of the colored water with it and creating the “lava lamp” effect. The chemical reaction that is occurring is an acid-base reaction, and results from the reaction between the ingredients in the Alka-Seltzer tablets.

Experiment A: This lab’s goal was to find out whether tap water or pond water had more tannin contamination. When tannin and chlorine combine, the resulting substance can become a carcinogen. I added a reagent in each sample of water; in this lab, the tannin reagent is used to illustrate if a solution has elevated tannin levels. If the substance has tannin, then the solution will turn blue in about 30 minutes. I used a tannin colorimeter to measure more precisely the concentration of tannin in a substance in parts per million.

Sugars are converted to ethyl alcohol when fermentation happens. In this experiment we determined if yeast cells undergo fermentation when placed in a closed flask with no oxygen. Glucose and yeast are mixed together in a closed flask and allowed to incubate for about one hour.
