My knowledge of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. is that it was founded January 5th, 1911. The first notable member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated that really sticks out to me is Umzae George Washington Carver. He was initiated in the Gamma Chapter in the year of 1918. To begin I selected him, because he was a very familiar name. I remember learning about Umzae George Washington Carver in the elementary and middle school. With creating over 100 different uses for the peanut, soybean, and sweat potato he was a very prominent African American man in the 1920s.

My interest in Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. sparked when I met Sheila Hudson. At the time I had no idea that she was an active member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. What I saw in Shelia Hudson was a smart, accomplished, proficient women who completely shattered all of my preconceived expectations of what I thought a sorority girl was supposed to be like.

Prior to the founding of Epsilon Omega Zeta chapter, Soror Esther Peyton organized the Sorority’s first national service project, the Coatesville Project, which aided children of the miners in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In 1995, Hattye Tillett suggested to the Amicae Club of Washington, D.C. to organize a social and civic group of their daughters and granddaughters of the Amicae called the Amicettes. Since being a freshman year here at JMU, I wanted to become a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated for both professional and personal growth reasons. I have always shied away from Greek life because of the stigmas associated with it, however, Zeta has debunked those many of those stigmas by not conforming to the majority. I appreciate that this organization embodies virtues, genuine sisterly love and self-confidence. There is beauty in a group of women using their knowledge to uplift each other, rather than tearing each other down.

Sorority gomes from the latin word ‘soror’, which means sister. When someone is a legacy then they are almost always automatically accepted into a sorority or fraternity, this is because of the legacy system. A legacy is a person who is related to someone that was apart of a sorority or fraternity, before them.
