John Brown: America's First Terrorists

I think John Brown was a hero, because he tried to find ways to free slaves. Even though he killed people or got people killed in the process, he still was trying his best to help free slaves. Supplying the slaves with weapons was a good idea, but did not turn out they way he wanted. Everyone messes up, but he still had this plan to try and help free slaves.

Looking at what he has fought for, it’s no doubt that he fought for a noble cause which is the freedom of slavery. John Brown shouldn’t be known as hero or terrorists because of want he has done applies to both sides. John Brown shouldn’t be known as a terrorist or a national hero because of his violent attack and raids. After, September 11, 2001 John Brown has been called a terrorist which has caused controversy about Brown’s legacy and reputation. Furthermore, in the article, The 9/11 of 1859 says, “He led 21 men all but two in their 20s, and many of them radicalized by guerilla fighting in Bleeding Kansas, the abolitionists’ Afghanistan”(Horowitz).

Treason, the act betraying one’s country or attempt to overthrow the government. John Brown did no such thing as a peaceful approach would gain nothing. On October 16, 1859, John Brown lead twenty-one men, made up of both white and black men, to attack a federal armory at Harper’s Ferry, Virginia. Brown’s plan was to steal weapons to give to freed slaves nearby and then return back to the mountains to do more raids to free more slaves. To do this, Brown and his men stopped man trains and took over many bridges to stop all people from coming in and stopping them. After this, Brown’ men got to the federal armory and took the weapons and captured hostages. John Brown thought that if the story got out about the weapons he stole, slaves would rebel against their slave owners and run away to meet him to join the fight.

Brown was an abolitionist who was strongly religious. In this rebellion, Brown and the other slaves had murdered civilians and also raided Harper’s Ferry. On execution day, two of the guards watching him and they wrote letters to their wives about Brown’s last moments alive.

A Hero in Disguise John Brown, some say that he is a cold blooded killer. Others say he is a hero to the nation. And he is a hero to the nation John Brown was a man who believed in his own personal beliefs. His beliefs were that every man is equal. And that slavery was wrong and he felt like he was meant to be the one to stop slavery in its tracks.

Today some people would say that John Brown is a terrorist, and some people would might say he isn’t. The dictionary’s definition of a terrorist is, “A person who uses unlawful violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims”. An example of this would be if a man shot about 20 to 35 children because culturally diverse kids were all in the same school together, versus the shooting at Las Vegas. That man was shooting people just to shoot people. Which is why I would say John Brown isn’t a terrorist because, he only killed the slave owners.

He saw the wrong in owning slaves. He believed what he was doing and what he believed in was right not wrong. He was hung with the pleasure of knowing he made an impact on the world. John Brown tried very hard to do anything to please god and free slaves.

John Brown is the man who famously lead the Harpers Ferry raid and was captured and hung for his failed attempt. He was attempting to free the slaves in a town where they did not want to be freed. His failed attempt lead to the deaths of many of his own men and innocent townspeople. Why would anyone attempt such a task? Is John Brown Insane?

John Brown was an abolitionist from the North who was raised to think that slavery was a sin. He was so devoted to God, that he broke many laws and killed a lot of white slave owners in order to achieve a "moral end." So in reality, he thought he was doing good and serving God's will, but he was actually costing lives and doing more bad than good. Over the course of his life, he had over twenty children with two wives and John Brown and his sons fought against slavery, which resulted in some sons dying. Brown moved his family a lot over many different states, and his home in Pennsylvania was a stop on the Underground Railroad.

John Brown is a abolitionist who was against slavery and has made a big impact to the abolitionist movement for slavery. Many debate is John brown was a hero or a murderer. He planned to help the movement by opposing a raid on harper leas ferry and wanted to free slaves and help them fight back. However his decision left a different type of impact.
