I agree that how John brown cast his whole vote In Harper's ferry. John Brown was certainly considered insane, a murderer, conspirer etc. But today he was a face of a revolution, a martyr for a bigger cause, or even a nice kidnapper. In my opinion, he cast his whole vote a little differently than he should of, but he did not personally kill anyone. I would not consider this civil disobedience because they were shooting at people and holding them at gunpoint.

This obsession to terminate slavery was his inspiration throughout all the skirmishes he fought in and slaves he helped free. On October 16, 1859, John Brown lead twenty-one men, made up of both white and black men, to attack a federal armory at Harper’s Ferry, Virginia. Brown’s plan was to steal weapons to give to freed slaves nearby and then return back to the mountains to do more raids to free more slaves. To do this, Brown and his men stopped man trains and took over many bridges to stop all people from coming in and stopping them. After this, Brown’ men got to the federal armory and took the weapons and captured hostages. John Brown thought that if the story got out about the weapons he stole, slaves would rebel against their slave owners and run away to meet him to join the fight.

John Brown was an abolitionist who was a part of the anti-slavery movement. He led the Harpers Ferry Raid in hopes to ignite a spark in slave uprisings. Brown was not insane for his plans of raiding and supplying slaves with guns from the arsenal. The plan for the raid was not a spontaneous attack.

His wife and Kids were sold to a plantation in North Carolina in 1848 (Walls). His family and wife, Nancy, all believed in God and knew he had a plan for them (Biography.com Editors). Henry Brown started to plan his own escape to freedom. Samuel Smith and James Smith helped with his plan (Walls). Henry was planning to pack himself in a box and ship himself to freedom (Biography.com Editors).

John Brown’s Raid was the effort by John Brown to initiate a slave revolt, and his first objective was to arm slaves by trying to take over the U.S. arsenal at Harpers Ferry. John Brown and twenty other men who joined him, including three of his sons and about fourteen African-Americans, went into the town of Harpers Ferry. Brown split up the group into the two, this proved to be the biggest mistake of the whole operation, with one group going to capture Colonel Lewis Washington along with other hostages. The main group, led by John Brown, intercepted a train in hope that slaves in the next town would hear about the rebellion and join it, but no slaves heard about it. After intercepting the train, the group went on to seize the armory in Harpers Ferry.

He attacked the arsenal in 1859 and he took it over easily because the defense was low at the arsenal. But soon after they took it over, the village near the arsenal attacked John Brown and his team of 21. In his team of 21 he had 5 sons helping him, 5 blacks and 16 whites. When the village attacked, no slaves helped fight so John’s team, including his 5 sons, died. John Brown was captured and hung a month and a half later on December 2,

John Brown chose to take a violent and aggressive manner of handling his viewpoint of slavery. When he attacks Harpers Ferry he had the plan of acquiring more weapons for him and his group in order to advance in the fight against slavery. His violence led to the death of many who did believe in slavery as well as the death of many who were opposed as they would go out and risk their lives to end slavery. John Brown gave others against slavery the power and will to take action and fight against the act of slavery as his and his sons’ bravery proved be one of the major points of injustice that led to the gruesome Civil War and

Brown grew up in a house that didn’t like people having slaves and was very religious. So every decision’s he made he didn’t regret because he was doing it for god or for the slaves. Everything he did he believed it was a mission from god.

Then in 1855 he travels to Kansas disguised as a Free-Soiler with his sons and in May 24th, 1856 he ordered his men to brutally kill five proslavery believers. This event riled up the abolitionists and sent a message to the Southern states. According to document B “Last Meeting Between Frederick Douglass and John Brown” John Brown is a hero because he was willing to give his life in order to hijack the armory in Virginia and help the slaves revolt against slavery by using those weapons. For example it states, “He thought that the capture of Harper’s Ferry would serve as notice to the slaves that their friends had come, and as a trumpet to rally them.” “…Convinced me that he was going into a perfect steel-trap, and that once in he would never get out alive.”

Some of the most important events that caused the Civil War were the rebellions that took place. Rebellions are the main reason we had the Civil War. Some of the most important rebellions were the attack by John Brown and the rebellion of Nat Turner. There were many other attempts of rebellion but these are the main reasons. John Brown was a White American abolitionist, who believed that rebellion was the only way to overthrow the idea of Slavery in the United States.

Brown went on to hire a drillmaster named Hugh Forbes to train his 21 followers including his sons. His plan was to gather escaped slaves along the way to the Harpers Ferry, Virginia. Before he left he wanted Frederick Douglass to accompany him, but Fredrick Douglass declined citing “it was a suicide mission”. On the night of October 16, 1859, Brown and his followers overran the arsenal of Harpers Ferry. They seized the armory and seven people were killed while a dozen others were wounded.

The ninth chapter of his book, “Slavery Without Submission, Emancipation without Freedom” discusses the abolition of slavery in America and its effect and ulterior motives; it benefitted the elite, while not strictly freeing the slaves. He uses other like-minded historians, key people, and key events to prove his claims. His claims that the government’s support of slavery was due to practicality, and by ending it there was a safe and profitable reconstruction, rather than a radical one.
