If you look at the story you will be able to recognize several instances of this theme. However, there are many misconceptions of the definition on the word bravery. Many believe that to be brave you must be a hero who risks their life to save the world. However, bravery in its true form has a much broader definition. It can be going on a roller coaster that terrifies you, or facing your fear of public speaking.

History is made from stories, stories that have been passed from generation to generation, eventually written down and recorded as a record. Most often History is written by the powerful, the victorious, and so facts can become twisted and history can grow to not truly reflect reality. In context, the winners of a game may justly say they won but intentionally leave out the penalties they took or the goals the other team scored. Similarly, this happens in history and so history must be revised upon the discovery of new facts and evidence to be able to do justice to the reality of events.

An epic hero is an individual who must evoke a sense of heroism through legendary and inspiring deeds (Merriam-Webster). These heroes of tragedy have the ability to determine their own fortune due to the amount of admired characteristics they possess. However, the ideals of an epic hero are constantly fluctuating due to the ever changing ideals of society. Although the characteristics of an epic hero are under constant modification, Beowulf is still an effective modern-day hero due to his acts of courage, compassion, and dedication in relation to his people. He put himself in dangers way even though he no real tie to these people, and not asking about any sort of payment before going out on the hunt.

Every past and modern culture over the course of history, has its hero’s. A hero is a person or figure that others look up to and use as forms of protection. Many cherish the hero’s, they make up who we are today. The Anglo-Saxon hero, Beowulf, and the postmodern hero/hero’s, the soldiers, both show the traits of bravery, selflessness, and loyalty. To have the trait of bravery you have to have lots of confidence in yourself and have courage.

Courage is a word that has many examples and has a well rounded definition. One may say it is the ability to face one's fear, although some may say it is just a trait the greatest heros carry in their “tool belt.” According to the dictionary it means “the ability to do something that frightens one,” or “strength in the face of pain or grief.” In the movie Finding Forrester the main characters Jamal Wallace and Will Forrester create an unlikely friendship after Jamal breaks into Will’s apartment, in which he leaves his backpack. Courage is an act of bravery one does that is frightening yet they still persevere. Courage is found in many different situations in the modern world like in members of our military, law enforcement, and many others ordinary people performing courageous acts to help better our society. Everyone wants to have courage since whether in music, Hollywood movies, fairytales, or books we are told courage is one of the most important attributes that can turn an ordinary person into a hero.

Courage is having the ability to act, despite fear, pain, or uncertainty. Courage does not suppress fear but allows one to continue in the face of fear. I made the decision, for example, to tell my parents about my sexuality. I am gay, and I knew the scrutiny I could face at home, and in society if I told my parents.
