Tolkien wrote his novels around the time of the Industrial Revolution although his discomfort with the rise of technology is visible through his work as he takes his characters years back. In his time, people were set on realism, however, Tolkien chooses the opposite and creates a fantasy world. This, as a whole, can be related-again-with his distress towards industrialization.
The difference between fantasists and realists, in terms of literature, is that realism is done with the intent to remain in the more conscious state then adding to beauty and order focusing only on the everyday. Fantasists were less popular in the 1930s as their style did not fit with the common way of thinking of the regular folk (Rogers & Rogers, 1980, pp. 37-38).

Although it increased production, it decreased the value of individual worker since they were not needed as much resulting in many folks losing their jobs. It also reduced the wages so individuals agreed to work longer hours. But the only ones succeeding from this bargain were the wealthy industrialists (Burwick, 2015, pp. I-II). However, for someone who experienced both World Wars, Tolkien saw industrialization as another way to mean death and destruction because of all the weaponry that he had seen. Tolkien’s agony with the rise of industrialization is visible in his novels as he takes his characters centuries back to a time where swords and spears were used rather than guns. Granting the time in Middle-Earth can be debated on the fact that some form of technology does exist however it is still very minimal. The shire which is supposed to be a representation of England with the hillsides and valleys has on the basic technology. Again, going back to the idea of swords rather than guns, swords, though they some common features with guns are still very different and almost humane; they are hand-crafted and possess a name and one has to face their enemy in order to use it, whereas guns can be used as a distance.
War profits that were invested into the industrialization, helped the economy become stronger. However, industrialization was insanely horrible for the United States during 1865-1900, for the reasons of working conditions, corruption and the boom and bust cycle. The working conditions in the factories, that the workers faced were scandalous. These horrible working conditions resulted in the workers performing strikes because of unhealthy environments, low wages and overcrowding.
While some might argue that Industrialization had primarily negative consequences for society because of the dangerous working conditions with no compensation for injury, it was actually a positive thing for society. Industrialization’s positive effects were that there were more jobs, child labor laws were created, and there was better transportation. The first thing was that more jobs were introduced. This made it easier for people to provide for their family, and although everyone had to work, they were all able to get a job so they could work.
Environmental damage, exploitation of workers, and overpopulation in cities are all negative effects of American Industrialization. The positive effects of Industrialization are that it made work cheaper, employed thousands of workers, and improved people’s daily lives.

It brought about industries such as the railroads, steel and oil that generated jobs and opportunities, as well as economic wealth. Although these times were great for some - mainly the millionaires gaining fortune from their businesses and poor immigrants who found better lives in America than there were in their home countries - others, like the farmers and industrial workers, found a hard time making a living in the new, fast paced America. Farmers and industrial workers responded to the cruelness of industrialization by politically, financially, and socially.
The Industrial Revolution, lasting from the late 1700s until the early 1900s, was possibly one of the greatest time periods in this world’s history. The release of harmful gases into the air from factories pollutes the world 's air, doing harm to the environment, further leading to global warming. Then, though it did boost many job opportunities, the living condition of the workers during the industrialization were poor. Company towns owned by business were rented out to employees. The owners forced them to live in isolated communities near workshops and forced them to buy goods with high interests. The cities were poorly constructed and crowded with people and residents.

It gave us the means of mass production, better transportation, and eventually the consumerist society that the United States is today. Industrialization did drastically change American society, but did it change America for the better? Did it do more good than bad? Overall industrialization had a big impact on the way our country developed. Industrialization effected the economic development of the United States in Numerous ways. For example, according to document 1a from 1860 to 1910 the value of manufactured products increased from $1.9 billion to $20.8 billion. For instance, kids were well fed, educated, and clothed. There were plenty of negatives, as well. One very sad example was the machine injuries that happened to both children and adults.
It also led to the involvement of child labor and people belonging to all genders. It was only after the Civil War that the nation’s railroads became extensive enough to distribute the excess product created by the industrialized factories across different regions. Between 1865 and 1920, industries began to industrialize with the advancements in technology. The result of industrialization was more economic activity aimed at distributing and selling the products.
Something that was good about the industrial revolution was that there was more workers and people could get payed more. Things that were bad was that little kids could. That’s bad because kid get hurt for example, for kids who worked on farms would ride on horse rakes and easily fall off and get crushed. Kids would get overworked after working 12 hours a day.
A major debate among Historians is if the Industrial Revolution was helpful or harmful. The industrial revolution created a big change in the society of America. It was an age of innovation and creativeness for the inventors of the world. It was an age of sorrow and despair for the workers of the world.
