Negatives of the Industrial Revolution
While some might argue that Industrialization had primarily positive consequences for society because of the mass creation of goods, it was actually a negative thing for society. Industrialization’s negative effects were the huge amount of child labor, the horrendous living conditions and the major city pollution. These main contributing factors are all reasons why the industrial revolution was mostly negative.
The first reason is because of the huge amounts of child labor. There were some children that were not getting an education because they had to work. In document 8 it is clear that the children in this photo are not getting an education. In fact most factories over worked and underpaid most children. In document 1 the girl says that “… I am at work in a spinning room tending four sides of warp which is one girl’s work” (document

In document 8 there is a picture of an old tenement and you can clearly see that the house is crowded. And some families were living with more than just their immediate families. “As countries industrialized, they also urbanized. This was a result of people moving to cities in large numbers in order to gain factory jobs.” (document 6). So there were masses of people moving into small crowded cities because it was closer to their place of work.
The last example was the major city pollution. The crowded cities were producing more and more waste and the cities were urbanized because of the factories and the factories were powered by children and the children were needed because of the rising demand for goods caused by the industrial revolution. There were no sewers during the industrial times so mostly the garbage was in the streets. So the air was bad and the cities were of poor quality and it definitely affected city life for the
The Second Industrial Revolution affected the North, South, West, and Midwest in several ways. New unions and laws were introduced. More issues regarding differences in culture and social classes arose. Economies developed greatly with efficient farming technologies and manufacturing industries. Populations had major changes with increased amounts of people in urban areas around cities, and increased amounts of immigrants.
The Industrial Revolution was a period where factories were enhanced and new luxuries were created, some of the luxuries are still used today! This Technological Revolution was a generation where Industrialization began, which was the development of factories and other human resources. The Industrial Revolution included many positive and negative effects for citizens, but for factory workers it was mainly negative. During The Industrial Revolution, citizens were forced to work in polluted factories with dangerous and terrible conditions.
The industrial revolution was both positive and negative for our country. Despite the fact that there were many good things that came out of about the revolution there was many more negatives for the people at the time. A few of these consequences included low and unequal pay, child labor, no job guarantee, and poor living conditions. These situations made it obvious to the government that something needed change, but it took a while for them realize it resulting in injuries and even death. Although it did take awhile for them to realize what they needed do to prevent this, eventually they did figure out laws to help stabilize and grow in in a healthy way.
In William Cooper’s testimony before the Sadler Committee, he stated that the workers began working at a very early age with long hours, rare meals, punishments and beatings, and the workers had no time for day school, so most factory workers were uneducated. “[I began working in the mills] when I was ten years of age . . .we began at five in the morning and stopped at nine in the night . . .we had just one period of forty minutes [for meals] . . .we were frequently strapped,” (Document 1).
While some might argue that Industrialization had primarily negative consequences for society because of the dangerous working conditions with no compensation for injury, it was actually a positive thing for society. Industrialization’s positive effects were that there were more jobs, child labor laws were created, and there was better transportation. The first thing was that more jobs were introduced. This made it easier for people to provide for their family, and although everyone had to work, they were all able to get a job so they could work.
Another way the industrial revolution could be considered negative is for the ottoman empire. They believed that industrialization was going to take away their power and their religious beliefs. Document 6 confirms this by saying, “Full of confidence in the help of the God, and certain of the support of our Prophet, we deem it necessary and important from now on to introduce new legislation to achieve effective administration of the Ottoman government and province.” This statement brings up religion and talks about how important it is to them. It then later says how they want to pass certain laws to maintain control and uphold their religious beliefs.
In addition, the way of producing iron changed in the early eighteenth century. The new method of smelting iron using courke was set off. As new factories were created and new inventions were made, new jobs popped up, leading to more and more places becoming urbanized. Industrialization creates economic growth and more jobs, leading to urbanization. In a region, when factories are constructed, their becomes a high demand for employment.
One of the biggest incidences in the US was immigration. There was an immense growth within the urban population due to the rise of cities quickly becoming flooded with immigrants and workers from every corner of the country. However, living in a city did not meet high expectations. In the other hand, it was place with such poor qualities. The cities were overcrowded, lacked proper sanitation as well as housing.
“According to [the 1920 census], 51.2 percent of Americans lived in communities with populations of 2,500 to more than 1 million. Between 1922 and 1929, migration to the cities accelerated, with nearly 2 million people leaving farms and towns each year” (Danzer 640). Urban areas were growing at an incredible rate. Urban growth has only accelerated in modern times. According to the US Census Bureau, in 2020, 80% of the total population of the US is in urban areas (“2020 Census Urban Areas Facts”).
The Industrial Revolution that began in Europe changed society in many ways. Some of these changes were positive while others were negative. A positive effect of the Industrial Revolution is more jobs are available. In document 1a only two people is needed to operated a machine and in document 1b more than one person is needed to use a machine.
Industrial Revolution Essay The Industrial Revolution was not the easiest times to live in; especially if someone were to work in one of the factories. For example, there were horrible conditions, unfair treatment towards the workers, and the list goes on. With these issues people can say that living during the Industrial revolution was extremely difficult. Especially if someone were to work in a factory.
As the Industrial Revolution came about in the early 1800’s and it had a big impact on not only how people lived, but how long people lived. From the British Medical Journal, The Lancet, the life expectancy of a professional was only to the age of 38, it was 20 years old for a person of the middle class or an average person, and for a laborer in the factories the life expectancy was about 17 years old. (Doc. 8) The reason for terrible numbers is all of the pollution in the air and water throughout the city. From The Graphic magazine, the picture shows the view from the Blackfriars bridge over the River Irwell.
It was unacceptable since the pollution was bad and kids would be
Kingsley Davis, who is said to have pioneered the study of historical urban demography wrote his “The Urbanization of the Human population” in 1965. In his essay, he states that the history of the world is in fact the history of urbanization and then begins with description of how tiny European settlements grew slowly through the Middle Ages and the early modern period. According to him, urbanization occurred mainly because of rural-urban migration and not the other factors that people believe. He discusses how the production levels of this time period, due to the feudal system, used to favor an agrarian culture and then how the process of urbanization intensified during the 1900s, especially in Great Britain. He then clarifies the difference between urbanization, which he describes as the process of a society becoming more urban-focused, and the growth of cities i.e. the expansion of their boundaries.
Urbanization To what extent is urbanization a critical driver of social instability, failure of infrastructure, water crises & the spread of infectious diseases? Urbanization is basically the gradual increase in the proportion of people living in the urban areas or a specific area, and the ways in how the society adapts to it. Urbanization can be a good impact to a country and has the ability to improve its economy and the life of people but it also has the ability to destroy the country and the life of all the people that exist there.
