I am a Registered Staff nurse who working at Bukit Batok Polyclinic. I am currently studying at the University of Sydney at Singapore Institute of Management pursuing Bachelor in Nursing (Post -registration ) programme. I am writing this letter because I would like to share with you my thoughts on the important of studying the discipline of nursing. I have a deep realization that it is important to study discipline of nursing. Oxford 's dictionary defines that discipline as ‘ a branch of knowledge, typically one studied in higher education’ . As discipline , we associate it as "professional" in which higher education and gaining a advanced knowledge to practice and function is require. Nurses would not argue with regard with the statement that nursing practice requires them to be knowledgeable pertaining to the patient 's overall well-being in order to take care of the patient. (Dossey & Keegan,2009). However, from the perspective from the society, nurses may just a low skilled worker, as a vocation a domestic labour as such changing diapers are viewed for the patient . To change society 's viewpoint involved with menial task like , nurses need to know what is the discipline of nursing is, to understand "what are we" instead of conforming to the image of what society believe to be.
