Bernal Diaz del Castillo Bernal Diaz was born in 1492 or 1498 to Maria Diaz Rejón and Francisco Diaz del Castillo, a regidor (council member) of the town of Medina del Campo, in Castilla y León. The family was distinguished but not wealthy. In 1514, Bernal went to seek his fortune in America with Pedrarias Dávila (Pedro Árias de Ávila), Bishop Fonseca's newly appointed governor of Castilla del Oro. A cruel and unscrupulous schemer, Pedrarias excelled at extorting riches by torturing native rulers, looting gems and gold from their graves, and eliminating potential rivals. (Pedrarias had his prospective son-in-law Balboa and four companions beheaded on trumped-up charges in 1519.)

Being different from others sometimes creates a desire for a person to change oneself. In the novel How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, by Julia Alvarez, the Garcia girls are stuck between America and the Dominican Republic, the two main settings of the novel. The girls are all dragged out of their homeland and thrown into an environment they thought would be welcoming. Even though they specifically come to America to live the so called “American Dream,” they hit some obstacles. When the girls see how different American culture is, and how much they do not fit in, they become self-conscious.

Therefore, Alvarez would struggle in school, similar to Cukita. By extending the pronunciation of the words, the speaker intends to incorporate the struggles of understanding the spoken words that came out of their father’s mouth. Alvarez’s experiences in trying to understand what her parents are trying to say is shown through Cukita’s small side notes after conversing with her parents. After a run-in with the cops, Enrique is arrested, but Carlitos gets away and finds his mother at the payphone she described to him during one of their calls. On November 15,Officer Jeronimo Yanez was charged with manslaughter and various gun charges due to a shooting at a routine traffic stop. On July 6, almost 5 months ago, Officer Jeronimo Yanez pulled over Philando Castile, with the assumption that he was involved in a robbery that happened a few days prior. Mr. Castile had his girlfriend and his child in the car when he was pulled over. After handing the officer his license and registration, Mr. Castile that he was armed, but there was a permit for the gun with his papers.

From Mexico to the United States, a very dangerous journey some take to have a better life or to reunite with their family. Even people who are as inexperienced, such as Enrique, go through this dangerous path to reunite himself with his mother. In the novel, Enrique's Journey, author Sonia Nazario uses literary devices such as theme, characterization, and POV to show us how events change a character along the way and reveals how a character truly is. Sonia Nazario uses theme to show us the drastic change in character, characterization to show us how the dangers of this journey has an impact on someone, and POV to show us how the character is someone else’s perspective.

Gregorio Esparza was born in San Antonio de Béxar his birth name was José Maria Esparza. He is known as a defender of the Alamo. He was born on February 25, 1802. Gregorio married Anna Salazar whom he had a daughter and three sons. All of Gregorio Esparza’s family was present during the siege of the Mexican Army but only one of his sons Enrique Esparza was one of the eyewitnesses to see his father’s death.

In search for a better life outside of the Dominican Republic, Anita’s whole family tries to move to America. One day sitting in her room, Anita look out her window to see no one left on the compound. Anita explains, “I look out the door and down the dark driveway. The whole flock of our family has fled. Only Mami and Chucha and I are left (pg.100 p.9).”Her whole family has gone to America to be free, leaving everything behind.

Pedro Alonso Lopez, also known as Monster of the Andes, was a colombian serial killer who was sentenced for killing eighty girls, but he claimed he murded and rapped about three hundred. Pedro Lopez was known for raping girls around his country then moved to Peru and Ecuador and all around. Pedros dad died when Benilda; his mother, was three months pregnant with her son at the time of his father's death.

She watches her mother sacrifice her virtue in order to keep them together, loose her sanity when another child is taken from her and eventually surrender her faith and health. And in the midst of all the chaos Juana learned, “to do what you have to do,” for the sake of your family In her search family proves to be an important theme. Once, when Juana risks her livelihood to search for her father, leaving her home with little money, and no knowledge of where to find him if he was even alive. Another way the importance of family is emphasized is in the sacrifices of each character for the sake of what they found most valuable, their family.
