Human Destruction In The Birds Short Story

Though they are seen as a symbol of development and growth, in reality, they are a destructive force. It is this destruction that is detailed in Bruce Barcott’s book The Last Flight of the Scarlet Macaw: One Woman’s Fight to Save the World’s most Beautiful Bird. This mish mash of nature journalism, mystery novel, and biography takes place in western Belize, in the depths of barely touched jungle along a river.

One of this week’s readings focused on Ch. 5, “Caged Birds,” in Professor Lytle Hernandez’s book City of Inmates: Conquest, Rebellion, and the Rise of Human Caging in Los Angeles, 1771-1965, and this chapter was particularly interesting because it further explained the development of immigration control in the United States. As a continuation from the last chapter, there was a huge emphasis in the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and the Geary Act of 1892. This essentially prohibited Chinese laborers from immigrating to the United States, as well as eventually requiring these people to comply with regulations. “Caged Birds” encapsulates the events afterwards, as the book heads well into the early-1900’s. The disenfranchisement of immigrants develops towards further exclusivity because “[by] 1917, Congress had banned all Asian immigration to the Unites States and also categorically prohibited all prostitutes, convicts, anarchists, epileptics, ‘lunatics,’ ‘

During this time people of the town were easily persuaded to persecute their fellow neighbors, due to their religion and it’s principles. Thirty years before the infamous Salem Witch Trials there was a witch scare in Hartford,Connecticut, resulting in raised tensions about witches, making the hangings of 20 people more of a safety precaution rather than a righteous and fair trial.

In Arthur Miller’s hit play, The Crucible, the yellow bird scene contains wild drama and fear. Mary Warren begins the scene filled with honesty, but as the commotion progresses, all sense of logic disappears, and the scene dissolves into panic. Miller creates this tone of hysteria through both the chaotic stage directions and intense dialogue. Throughout the scene, Miller’s stage directions, and the dialogue of his characters, throw the courtroom into panic and bring the tension to new heights. The way Danforth interrupts Reverend Hale while he pleads, “ I pray you call back his wife before we-,” changes the way the characters treat each other, effectively introducing a new sense of hysterics to the scene.

The short story “The Thing in the Forest'' by A.S Byatt is a story full of mysteries and mysterious events two young girls go through together. The author Byatt makes use of imagery and symbolism to convey strong underlying meanings and help develop the plot. The main purpose of the story is to use imagery and symbolism through beings and places the two main characters Penny and Primrose encounter and the life events they experienced respectivly. Over all the symbolism gives a perspective on how war might be seen by a child and everything associated with it. The first instance in which we see imagery and symbolism used to convey wartime is the “thing” in the first.

Daphne du Maurier’s short story “The Birds” is a piece of fiction that displays many literary elements. This story displays suspense, foreshadowing, and imagery. By using these literary elements du Maurier creates an intense story that leaves the readers wondering what happens next and wanting more. First, foreshadowing is used to reference events that will happen further into the story.

The imagery that Connell creates in The Most Dangerous Game captivates the audience into a tale that makes one’s heart stop even for a split second. The feelings of suspense are nearly tangible to the reader when the silence of the writing surrounds them. Additionally, the two contradicting moods are easily flowed through together and yet discreetly set apart due to Connell’s use of imagery in various scenes. Despite all the other literary devices used within The Most Dangerous Game, imagery has to be the element that really allows the emotions of the literary piece to connect to its

The ratio of birds to humans is approximately 300 to 7, so if humans were attacked by a mass of birds, there’s a very slim possibility of survival, if any possibility. This is the base of the plot of Daphne du Maurier’s short story, The Birds (1952), and Alfred Hitchcock’s movie adaptation of the same name, which came out in 1963. While there are similarities between them, such as the conflict and the theme, there are also differences, such as the characters and the setting. This essay will be covering the similarities and the differences between the short story and the film. There are a few similarities between the short story and the movie, like the conflict and the theme.

In The Pioneers, Cooper’s main theme is destruction of the beautiful wilderness and it’s animals. In chapter XXII the ‘Slaughter of the Pigeons’ scene in The Pioneers, Cooper vividly describes the heartless and gruesome war between man and pigeon. He starts with detailed descriptions of the land so the reader can fully grasp how wonderful this part of the wilderness was. He writes, “the green wheat fields were seen in every direction, spotted with the dark and charred stumps that ad, the proceeding season, supported some of the proudest trees of the forest” (Cooper 832). Then he goes on to explain the authority of the United States symbolic bald eagle and the migration of the flocks of birds.

The story uses the literary devises such as foreshadowing, imagery, and characterization to create an exhilarating tale. Maurier uses these three components to tell a thrilling story that keeps the reader on edge.

Even though the story, “The Destructors” by Graham Greene utilizes some elements of commercial fiction it can be categorized as literary fiction. This story contains more of the complex elements of literary fiction. The story’s main literary elements include intricate conflicts, a unique protagonist, and On the surface, the conflict of the story appears to be based simply around the Wormsley Common Gang and the destruction of the house. However, once readers go deeper the conflicts in the story begin to reveal themselves as more complex and literary. They’re not just boys that want to generate chaos and destruction, but they’re boys that are living amongst the consequences of war.

“Caged Bird” written by Maya Angelou in 1968 announces to the world her frustration of racial inequality and the longing for freedom. She seeks to create sentiment in the reader toward the caged bird plight, and draw compassion for the imprisoned creature. (Davis) Angelou was born as “Marguerite Annie Johnson on April 4, 1928 in St Louis, Missouri”. “Caged Bird” was first published in the collection Shaker, Why Don’t You Sing? 1983.
