The story A Christmas Carol, written by Charles Dickens, is a story about a rich old man who had a deep hatred for Christmas and everything involved in it. Scrooge shows that he redeems himself, and proves that he's changed throughout the story, through his generosity to the poor, his generosity to Cratchet, and through his newfound love for christmas. To begin, Scrooge shows he redeems himself through his thoughtfulness and generosity for the poor. Scrooge wakes up on Christmas Day in a joyous and delighted mood, “And will you have the goodness —-here Scrooge whispered in his ear.(66)” When Ebenezar is approached by the portly men he gives them lots of shillings to help them and the other poor out. Scrooge raising his salary helps cratchit a lot because he was very poor and was having a hard time money wise so the raise will help him out a lot. Buying the turkey also allows the Cratchits to have a very merry Christmas and probably have a Christmas like they've never had before. Ebezezar says he will also help his family so they can have an easier life. All of this is a huge reason that I believe Scrooge redeems himself and is a changed person. Finishing off, Scrooge wakes up on Christmas full of life, his heart laughed, and he possessed a newfound love for the holiday; “It's Christmas Day!(64)” Scrooge commits to being generous and compassionate about the Holiday instead of having a deep hatred for it like he used to. He accepts the invitation to attend his nephew's dinner and provides for them. This is the final thing that shows how much Scrooge changes throughout the story. Not only does he no longer hate Christmas, but he embraces and enjoys
In the Christmas Carol, Ebeneezer Scrooge had always hated Christmas. He was never happy, he would always argue about something. Until one night that changed everything including his emotions, feelings, and life. He became a very sweet old man. Scrooge is officially an old man that loves Christmas.
Scrooge’s changes The story A Christmas Carol was written by Charles Dickens. In the book A Christmas Carol Scrooge was mean at the beginning but as the book kept going he was visited by 3 ghost and by the end Scrooge is no longer mean to people. In stave 1 Scrooge rejected the poorly men for donations and after he did that he felt good about it.
Scrooge’s fiancé leaves Scrooge due to his greed and feels like she made the mistake as shown in the text “do not let her go”(Horovitz 257). This shows a sign of Scrooge‘s guilt, intimidated by his decisions and is starting to change. Scrooge gives a turkey and a raise to Bob Cratchit. This shows change in Scrooge's character as shown in the text “ Oh, I didn’t tell you? Yes, I’ve written the precise address down just here on this . . .
After reliving his past Scrooge feels like a fool and wishes to be removed from the
Before the ghosts’ visit Scrooge had a dismal and gloomy attitude towards Christmas because he tells his nephew that exclaiming “Merry Christmas” is absurd. After the ghosts’ visit Scrooge yells Merry Christmas out his window. Another example of Scrooge hating Christmas is before he doesn’t want to go to the Christmas party and insults it. On Christmas day, after the ghosts’ visit he decides to go to the Christmas party. The last example from before the ghosts’ visit is how he is mean to his clerk, Bob, and is mad that he is asking to take Christmas day off.
Scrooge is a grouchy old man who hates Christmas and any way shape or form of good will towards mankind. Later on when he is walking to his home Marley visits him and notifies him of the three spirits coming to him soon (Video 1984). Scrooge is scared and confused. After Seeing what the three spirits show him he is slowly changing and starts realizing that the things he does are not right. After seeing his own gravestone he gets frightened and then starts pleading for another chance and promises to live out the Christmas spirit(Video 1984).
Scrooge has finally discovered what it means to be happy. He realizes that joy comes from being together with other people and helping others
He did it all and infinitely more; and to Tiny Tim, who did NOT die, he was a second father. He became as good as a friend, as good a master, as good man, as the good old city knew, or any other good old city, town, or borough in the good old world. And it was always said of him that he knew how to keep Christmas well, if any man alive possessed the knowledge. This shows how Scrooge was not as lonely anymore and would have a new caring family to spend time with. He changed because he didn't want a terrible future because he was already as loney when he was a
This shows that even if the Cratchit family was not wealthy or had the most stable living conditions, they could still be with relish as they had each other. They did not care about money during this very moment, only family. This took Scrooge aback as he always had a profound apathetic attitude towards these gatherings and those who are less fortunate. It would not be until later that he realizes that if money controls his life, he truly is not living. Another event that causes Scrooge to realize the importance of family is a gathering his nephew has with a few other family members.
This can be seen when Scrooge interacts with the same people he did at the beginning; his nephew, the volunteers, and his employee Bob. He acts nice towards all of them and gives money to charity, shows up at his nephew's party, and even increases Bob's salary. In addition to that, his past is what makes most people feel sympathy for him. When the Ghost of Christmas Past first takes Scrooge back to his childhood school, we observe that most Christmases he remained at the empty school, alone. (#33, Dickens)
Towards the end we see Scrooge, for the first time in at least a few decades, spread the Christmas spirit by giving to those he would normally be disgusted by. Scrooge's change is not realistic because he changed merely based on fear and considering the length of his bitterness, Scrooges’ change in one day is frankly impossible.
This response is the opposite of what is expected. Dickens is slowly showing that there is more to Scrooge’s unsympathetic self. Scrooge’s realization of how badly he treated Bob Cratchit is a way of Dickens showing an alter in Scrooge’s character. Scrooge, a heartless, selfish man, is least expected to become loving and thoughtful. Yet, through tone and characterization, Dickens shows that no matter the person, they can better
At the beginning of A Christmas Carol,Scrooge is mean, selfish, and greedy. He is mean, because on pg.9, he never donates to the poor, and he always yells at little kids. Scrooge is also selfish because on pg.12, he never pays a day wages for no work. They say “it's a poor excuse for picking a man’s pocket every twenty-fifth of december!”Also, another word is he is greedy,on pg.17, says he is caustic and cold as ever and never gave anything to anyone. He said “what do you want with me.
In the text, Scrooge is visited by two portly gentlemen who ask Scrooge to donate to the poor because they are
Scrooge in "The Christmas Carol" shows how much he hates Christmas, and everyone he works with to change to a happy person with the help of others. Scrooge emphasizes, "What a fine day fellow... An Intelligent boy, a remarkable boy. " This is a critical part of this novel because this shows Scrooge overcame his dislike of Christmas and his entire disliking of people. Instead of rudely gesturing to people, he is now starting to act nicer, and more mature.
