In 1861, after years of violent tensions between the Northern and Southern United States over the issues that many Southern states wanted more authority over the federal government, so they could abolish federal laws they did not agree with them, like the right to keep slaves and they believe if slavery were to be abolish it could collapse the United States economy. Slave owners wanted to take slavery into the new territories in the west, but the North wanted to keep them open to white labor alone. Slavery was detrimental to the county economy because slaves lacked the rights to earn wages, which lead a large number of people not buy consumer goods to boost the economy. A slave economy also discouraged the growth of the economy because many slave owners saw that slavery was a cheaper resource then paying a servitude to work on the fields. The south dominant over the north with their agriculture of cotton which lead the main producer of cotton for France and Britain. This firmed up the desire for the south to own more slaves and grow their cotton plantation into the west. The north wanted to end slavery because it did not provide economy growth for the nation and it took away many jobs from the white working class. The north did not want the south to expand to the west territories because slave owner will have taken large amount of land from the work white class. South saw the significance of slavery as it provides economic benefits and opportunities to grow their business. As banning slavery, it could damage the southern economy, as a result slave owner believe that secede from the union could increase their profits, boost their economy, and allow them to pass laws that will help their country. The south wanted the United States to protect their rights of owning slaves because Southerners have invested a lot of money into slavery and by banning slavery will cause slave owners lose money. The North and South had completely different social structure, economy, political values and customs. The northern states were industrialization, producing large amount raw goods and machines, while southern states were involved in the plantations which used slavery labor and farming to produce their nation goods. Those difference between the north and south led the southerners secede from the union as both side believe their way of life was better than the other
Uncompromising differences between the South (Confederacy) and the North (Union) created a civil war that lasted five years. During this war, Abraham Lincoln was president. His election led to the secession of many Southern states. After refusing to recognize the Confederacy as its own nation, the American Civil War commenced in 1861. The three main causes of the Civil War between the North and the South were industrial and agricultural economies, politics, and slavery.
The Northern states were in favor of ridding the nation of slavery, but according to Louis P. Masur’s The Civil War, the Southern states considered it to be a necessary evil. Thus, leading to the “debate [that] framed a disagreement about slavery, that never ended.” In Ken Burn’s Civil War, Shelby Foote mentioned that the war began because the nation couldn’t compromise. Southerners refused to get rid of the very institution that assisted with their economic prosperity.
The South seceded because of slavery, political power, the differences in their way of life. Slavery was a major issue here in America. The South wanted slavery and the North didn’t. “Government cannot endure half slave, half free” (Doc 5).
Some may say that Also, there were many northerners had slaves too. Slavery had been a State right for the southerners to have and they felt their right was violated. Slavery may have divided America but some may say slavery was not what caused the division and led to the Civil War. The South wanted power over their federal government so they could have the power to abolish federal laws they did not support. Southernern states’ rights struggle between federal government and individual stats over political power.
The Louisiana purchase was a $15,000,000 purchase of land that got us about 15 states. Thomas Jefferson bought the land mass, all west of the Mississippi, from Napoleon Bonaparte in 1803. This Louisiana purchase got about 15 states including Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Arkansas, Iowa, and most of South Dakota, Louisiana, Wyoming, Montana, and part of Texas, North Dakota, Minnesota, Colorado, New Mexico, and Missouri. How does this connect to the Civil war? There are three different reasons it affects the Civil war and helped start it.
Because of the south's differing climate compared to the north, cash crops such as tobacco and cotton were able to be grown and harvested in this region. As the cotton economy expanded so did the number of plantations and farms that produced this crop, so the dependence of slavery grew as well since slaves were the main labor force of the south, especially on larger plantations. The North, being much more concentrated on industrialization than an agrarian lifestyle was unable to grow these crops due to their climate, depended less on slaves, their innovated cities and businesses, and the increased education of their people does not directly become affected by the discontinuation of slavery. The South felt that if slavery was abolished this would result in economic recession and thus their defensiveness to maintain enslavement enhanced. Northerners were afraid that if the south continued to feel pressured to get rid of slavery and isolated from the rest of the United States then they would more likely succumb to
Due to different views on the topic of slavery, the two sides of the United States had very different economies. The North was using more industrialized products and factories were very common up in the North. In the South, however, they used more plantations and less factories. The South’s economy was very agricultural while the North’s economy was very factory oriented. It demonstrated differences in a very obvious way.
In the early 19th Century, the United States were divided over the issue of slavery. The majority of northern states wanted to stop its expansion or even abolish it, while the southern states wanted the opposite, as slavery was the most important factor in the southern economy. Eventually, the country broke into civil war over the issue. The American Civil War was a direct result of the building tension between the North and South due to lack of compromise and the difficulty of interpretation of the United States Constitution.
President Lincoln's election in 1860 threatened slave labor in the south. The southerners feared their slaves and way of life would be taken away from them, thus, they decided to secede. Their dissolving of ties with the Union was actually a peaceful action, however, the Union did not like the fact that the country was separated. This division and separation of the country weakened the nation, which made the country vulnerable to outside invader. The United States refusal in accepting the confederate secession caused a rather large conflict between the two regions.
The Civil War started because of uncompromising differences between the free and slave states over the power of the national government to prohibit slavery in the territories that had not yet become states. Abraham Lincoln won the election of 1860 as the first Republican president, and pledged keep slavery from expanding in the territories (Text, 402). After Lincoln was elected, South Carolina succeeded from the Union and soon other slave states in the deep South joined. The seceded states together formed a new nation called the Confederate States of America (Text, 404).
The North was protectionism and supported anti-slavery. On the other hand, the South had free trade and supported slavery. Because of the war, the country faced a crisis of splitting into two nations, but it was prevented by President Lincoln. He issued the Emancipation Proclamation and opened the way to peace in America. After the declaration, all slaves
‘Slavery was the root cause of secession’. ‘November 6 1860, Lincoln was elected president of America which resulted in panic emerging in the South’ . The election of Lincoln as president who was a Republican leader meant that ideologies, movements and values from the North would be implemented in the South which meant the abolition of slavery. Slavery was a huge characteristic of the South as the economy; politics; social status and psychological mind-sets were influenced by the process of slavery. The southern white population then derived the idea of secession which meant the South would gain independence from Northern aggression .
The South was able to produce 7/8 of the worlds cotton supply. The South became more dependent on the planted field system and it’s full of force part, slavery. Notably, at that moment, the North was flourishing industrially. The North depended on factories and others
In 1861, the South seceded from the Union. This act began the long and bloody Civil War that spanned from April 12, 1861-May 13, 1865. Many people think the Civil War was simply over slavery but there was a lot more conflict than what is remembered. The South seceded from the Union over differences in opinions concerning slavery, states’ rights, tariffs, and sectionalism.
The American Civil War was the war that ended slavery. The civil war was known as one of the bloodiest and deadliest conflicts the United States had ever seen. The loss of life was an estimated amount of 620,000 men. It lasted four years, from April 12, 1861, through May 9, 1865. However, while slavery was a major cause of the American Civil War, there were several other major factors.
